@Pete We built a David Gilmore Custom instead. Fender NZ helped us out which saved us a fortune. Used Dark Moon Black and Tan pick up's and it's absolutely stunning! I grabbed 4 sets of strings before lock down and he only has one pack left. He loves it and his other Fender has been parked up ever since. How much did it actually cost. I’m not a guitar player, actually can’t play anything I’ve always been fascinated by guitars an people who can play guitar. But I’d love to know how much it would cost to build something like that as tinkering an building electronics is a big passion of mine an I love woodworking and finishing. So to combine something like to get a end product like that would be lots fun plus it would give me the excuse to at the very least make a piss poor attempt at learning how to play guitar 🎸 I just can’t see dropping to much money if I could build a quality guitar for reasonable price so that if I just can’t get it I could least recoup my cost by selling it I’d be very interested. Guess that is a lot info when I could of left it at what the cost was total an maybe a break down on what each component costed would be cool to know.

I've been working on my own guitars for many decades. Was kicking around the idea of a build similar to yours. Man, I like what you have built. Thank you for sharing. God bless you brother.
Tip on drilling for pickguard: After drilling screw holes of apprpriate diamater, use a large countersink bit, just turning it with your fingers to relieve the corners at the top of the hole. I believe this method is easier to control than using a larger bit as suggested (but not shown) in the video. As Darrell mentioned around 19:22 this relief keeps stress off the finish when the screws are installed, but it also keeps the finish from bulging at that point which can prevent the pickguard from sitting flush. These issues are more important when thicker finishes have been applied.
Wow, what an amazing turnout! That thing is absolutely stunning! Hats off to you, brother; you own the best looking Strat ever made. It seriously looks like a $10k guitar!
Darrell, I know absolutely nothing about guitars, but was amazed at your knowledge when building one from parts😄. So cool!!! I don't think you should change a thing. It is so so gorgeous!!! Thank you for sharing, and I hope you truly enjoy everything about that gorgeous guitar!!!
18:48 Hello Darrell, your cute little dog is watching you to make sure you're doing a good job here! And thank you for your videos, which I always enjoy watching!
Just put a set of the HipShot encased locking tuners on my made in China Squire Super Strat and what a fantastic Upgrade !! After buying a Ibanez and a Kramer Baretta re-Issue I decided to go back to my favorite body shape in the Standard Strat body with two Hot humbucker's in the bridge and neck positions . I'm a 80's Thrash Metal and Glam fan/player and got the guitar for $350 brand new and decided just to Mod it slowly into the Metal beast I have been wanting ! So far so good . A lot of people think Metal and Strats dont go together , and they are dead wrong just needs some TLC and a few upgrades its just as MEAN sounding as any BC Rich , ESP or Jackson Metal Guitar for a fraction of the price even with the mods just start with the most Important mods 1st and its easy after that . Thanks Darrel great Video interesting build !!
Nice job mate. For me, I'd keep the abalone knobs. Everything black is too boring & too gloomy, you need a bit of colour. If the pickups were the only colourful thing then the guitar starts to look odd, so the abalone knobs tie everything together nicely 👍
The bit of color comes from the pickups and the dot inlays though, you add too much and you're beyond the point of tasteful accenting and taking away from the effect of contrast. If you overwhelm the appearance with abalone, it starts to look like a holofoil toy from the 1990s. Less is more in this fashion.
Stunning build. Even the back of the body is beautiful. Abalone pickups look great on the flame top. Nothing to complain about. I'd have to see what it looks like with black knobs, but it look sharp as is. ....sounds great, as expected. Well done.
I own a 2005 American Deluxe stratocaster with a mahogany body that has the same exact neck on it with the black painted headstock and LSR roller nut. It has a transparent bing cherry red paintjob and it is my main axe and has been since 2005... They hold tune very well as long as you aren't acting like Jack Butler at the end of the Crossroads duel it stays in tune. Hope you still like the build!!!
I won't put a dislike because the content and production of his video are top....but dude seriously needs to sit on his hands while presenting. Its extremely distracting and all the flashing from his arms flailing around like an epileptic octopus on meth triggers my own epilepsy 😳😬
Being an electronics tech with zero guitar playing ability, it’s really great to watch you at work, Darryl. I’m a drummer, so work these kinds of miracles on my own instruments. Can’t get enough!
That might be the best looking SuperStrat I've ever seen, and it sounds nice and fat like a SuperStrat should!! The knobs look great with the abalone tops, but I can't help but wonder how it would look with a black 3 layer pick-guard that has a middle layer that matches the abalone shell. I bet a thin line of color outlining the pick-guards shape would really pop on such a beautiful dark background!
Hey man, I've been watching since your floating trem video like 4 years ago, seen every video since and I never really gave you the credit you deserve. You really deserve the best man, your videos give so many people joy and inspiration its unbelievable. Thanks for the content man keep it up
Looks cool man. I replaced two pickups on my first serous guitar as well as giving it a serious setup. Truss rod and lots of non floyd rose floating trem fiddling. It wasn't great but it was better than before. On later guitars I handed it over to guitar techs for setups and new pickup installs. It's worth having a go. Often you can get it right and save a fortune if you educate your self enough. The Guitar handbook emboldened me to have a go at fitting a new pickup and it worked - twice. I even routed out the space on a cheap strat clone the space to fit a humbucker in the bridge. After buying a £600 Ibanez5 70 and wanting a replacement bridge pickup with coiltap and coil switching I decided a pro would be better. He did it and put it in a coil tap microswitch that has lasted 30 years. Trust the pros for the hard jobs - Have a go for the simpler jobs. Luv and Peace.
I would see what the blacked out knows would look likr..it's beautiful I'd love to own a guitar like that I learned on a Strat, and love the neck on it you did a wonderful job 😀
When attaching the pick guard to the body I line it up to where it should be, then tape it into position before drilling the screw holes. You don't want that thing moving at all when drilling those holes.
Thanks for the vid. I have an old strat in my garage that was left behind by one of the neighborhood kids that we named the “Ratocaster” It’s all there, it works and the neck is straight. I think that I am inspired to take on this beast and make it sound better than it looks. No artificial aging required on this one...
Beautiful work, the knobs look great as is..I wished that I had the patients to put a guitar together mainly the soldering I would be all thumbs..lol..Anyway, congratulations on a beautifully tuned guitar!!
That guitar is beautiful. It sounded awesome as well. I really like the tuners and the tremolo setup. You have given me some ideas for my next build. Thanks for that. Can't wait for more of your posts.
I really, really like that partscaster build, black on black is very cool. Nice find on the body btw. A couple of years back I built a black on black partscaster with a telecaster body made by shecter, routed for a Floyd rose trem. I always wanted a tele with a Floyd, (don't judge me) I found a pawn shop aria pro strat with a really nice neck that I got for $60.00. (The body was $250.00) I think, I found a lisenced by Floyd on line for about $20.00 or $30.00 made in who knows where. I put a S D trembucker J B in the bridge position got a blank single ply pick guard (black) modded it with my own curve as opposed to the standard tele straight cut on the lower bout of the pick guard. I put a push pull volume with a boost on the pull, a tone switch rather than a tone pot, spst full on to output or slightly less treble, and a kill switch button. This has become my # one, I really want to build another one so I have a back up. But I want to build a LP junior double cut with a single pick up and possibly a Floyd as well. I also built a parts strat last year, with two pick guards that I can switch between hss or sss configurations, standard trem with locking tuners. Sorry I guess I'm babbling on and on. Really like your builds, tips and stuff. Take care...🎸😈🎸
Beautiful. I'll have to try one. one suggestion. AS an old carpenter I have a drill bit set that I use for fastening hinger, strike plates, etc. or any thing that has a chamfered hole to accept a screw. They have a chamfered piece that fits into hole you are screwing into. Inside is a drill bit that extends out of the tip when pushing down on the drill motor. Perfectly centering the hole every time. Can't wait to start mine.
Perfectly beautiful. The abalone button tops give color balance to the overall appearance, I think. Sounds good, too. Outstanding. I thoroughly enjoyed this build. Thank you!
Absolutely love it! Only thing I spotted, you mentioned... need a blackout output jack nut. Definitely keep the abalone knobs. Would have liked to see the intonation setting for it. Do you need my address for when I ask you to build me one? Maybe a Warmouth Mooncaster? GOOD ON YA DB!
I'd say like the gold exposed gears and the silver logo on the head that the silver output jack gives it a more functional feel. Like it's not trying too hard. It's one of the parts that over time would get messed up and could look trashy so keeping it silver allows the black trem and tuners to own their statement.
at 19:57 the view angle makes the head appear grey which really sets off the tuners. I like that better than the black. Also, keep the abalone knobs, they really draw attention to the pickups. But a really fun video!
This looks fantastic! The ground wire that you soldered to the claw anchor, I always remove that from the claw anchor, crimp on a ring connector, and screw that directly into the body with a metal screw (not a wood screw). That will help dissipate the "buzz" a little better. It seems like the claw doesn't provide a solid enough connection from the ground line to the wood of the body. I always do this when setting up new strats and any Fender basses.
$300 for pickups ($150 each) No idea about the abalone knobs and custom shop work for the pre-assembled pick guard. $645 for the body Neck is $550-$700 IF you can find one. $80-$90 for the tuners $165 for the bridge set up So low end I would guess $1650 easy. More likely about $2000 if you tried to build an exact replica.
@@DaCrazyDingo I bet I could build one from GFS FOR 20O $ TO 300$ that would sound just as good and it would be nice no ablone inlays but. Still who spends 2000$ to build a guitar.
captain deadpool someone who wants a guitar that fits them to their liking. If YOU personally think a GFS would be just as good then that’s 100% you. Not everyone loves stock guitars when they’re looking for something like what he’s building
That is absolutely stunning. I did a Warmoth Strat build about 7 years ago. I did not trust my own skills at the time, so I paid a guy to assemble it all. Definitely not cheap in the long run. I learned a lot from your video. It makes me want to build another one! Awesome work!
Thanks for posting this. I started with having others built parts guitars with the parts I specified to doing it myself, and it's a great hobby. I enjoy your videos, and I love the positive outlook and vibes you always have in your videos.
You have convinced me Darrell to put together and build my own Strat I have been thinking about it for a while. I did pay attention on where you got your parts from and I have saved this video. Thanks.
Black knobs. 100%. It’s too much with those three additional trim elements, and breaks the black hole Darth Vader look. The in line neck aesthetic works better from a design perspective. One of the most beautiful guitars I’ve seen in a while. Great build.
I'm serious about building the same guitar. Could you give me more information regarding the pickups e.g. Spacing, Wire, Magnet, Wax Potted, and resistance.
Hey, great video and a nice guitar but you passed over a step I didn't even know about. (Stupid me!) The painting of the routed areas - what material, what sort of brushes, number of coats, etc. Maybe when you do a future guitar you can film your wife doing the painting and show us how that goes. How much time. Any tricks or tips. Thanks again for all you do. Great channel.
+Mark Knecht Hi! She did 2 costs with conductive sheilding paint. Stewmac, Guitar Fetish, eBay, and Amazon all sell it. It is water soluble so if any spills where it shouldn't go (top of guitar) it can be easily wiped off with a damp cloth. ☺
2 outer springs should be straight so the springs have equal tension, with the outer springs angled the middle one doesn’t have the same tension as the other 2
I would like to know that too. It depends on how much discount he got from Warmouth and others and if he things cheaper on ebay but I checked warmoth website and the body itself is around $400 to $500 itself. So my guess would be at least $800 because the hipshot tuners are $70 and hipshot bridge/block is $150 (i looked at the hipshot website). There's also cost of the pickups. The small things like jack, wires, buttons doesn't cost much
You can get a great DIY-Superstrat,that plays and sounds as good as boutique one,for really cheap,if you're willing to do some work or know somebody, with the know-how to help you.A friend build a Jake E.Lee inspired superstrat, for one of his students for little less then 800 Euros(he and the kid did the work).Charvel sells a Jake E.Lee sign. model for over 3,500 Euros!!
Pretty guitar, nice job. The neck has the perfect shape, more slim like a Charvels. Putting a locking nut on a strat is tough due to the angle so the roller nut is cool.
The knobs are like cufflinks to a tuxedo awesome build
My thoughts exactly! It is classy AF
Well put!
Hehehe knob
I can use my cufflinks in better way :)
That’s a good way of putting it.

I'd say like the gold exposed gears and the silver logo on the head that the silver output jack gives it a more functional feel. Like it's not trying too hard. It's one of the parts that over time would get messed up and could look trashy so keeping it silver allows the black trem and tuners to own their statement.
Such a humble guy, love these videos, definitely subscribing 👌
That cute puppy 😍😍😍😍😍
ZERO FRICTION I know... Cute puppies and guitars.... Next thing you know a hot chick will walk by
at 19:57 the view angle makes the head appear grey which really sets off the tuners. I like that better than the black. Also, keep the abalone knobs, they really draw attention to the pickups. But a really fun video!
My Warmoth setup should arrive today or tomorrow. Your step by step really helps me know what I'll need to do.
That is an amazingly beautiful guitar. Holy smokes.
That guitar is absolutely BEAUTIFUL! Abalone knobs work very well . Just wish the pick guard didn't cover so much of the amazing body. Nice build!!
Stunning! Just curious what the total cost of the super Strat build would have been . Thx
safe guess...expensive
This looks fantastic! The ground wire that you soldered to the claw anchor, I always remove that from the claw anchor, crimp on a ring connector, and screw that directly into the body with a metal screw (not a wood screw). That will help dissipate the "buzz" a little better. It seems like the claw doesn't provide a solid enough connection from the ground line to the wood of the body. I always do this when setting up new strats and any Fender basses.
How does that ground the spring claw? don't get it
Love the look! I would switch to the black knobs so our eyes go to the pickups and neck inlays. The shinny knobs distract in my opinion. Great video!
Would love to see a cost breakdown
$300 for pickups ($150 each)
No idea about the abalone knobs and custom shop work for the pre-assembled pick guard.
$645 for the body
Neck is $550-$700 IF you can find one.
$80-$90 for the tuners
$165 for the bridge set up
So low end I would guess $1650 easy. More likely about $2000 if you tried to build an exact replica.
@@DaCrazyDingo I bet I could build one from GFS FOR 20O $ TO 300$ that would sound just as good and it would be nice no ablone inlays but. Still who spends 2000$ to build a guitar.
@@captaindeadpool1640 Uhhh, that would be someone who can.
@@radio7353 What made you come to that conclusion? GFS has some nice stuff imo.
captain deadpool someone who wants a guitar that fits them to their liking. If YOU personally think a GFS would be just as good then that’s 100% you. Not everyone loves stock guitars when they’re looking for something like what he’s building
Amazing job Darrell, that is a cool guitar.
I’m loving it with you👍 Abalone all the way 🤟
Keep the knobs colorful!!! Bravo!
That is absolutely stunning. I did a Warmoth Strat build about 7 years ago. I did not trust my own skills at the time, so I paid a guy to assemble it all. Definitely not cheap in the long run. I learned a lot from your video. It makes me want to build another one! Awesome work!
Thats the best looking Non-Kiesel SS I have ever seen.
what is most impressive is that his dog doesnt try to eat everything in front of him like mine does
the brown color is so beautiful. and thank you a lot for showing the whole process. i guitar is not that complicated to build xD
Thanks for posting this. I started with having others built parts guitars with the parts I specified to doing it myself, and it's a great hobby. I enjoy your videos, and I love the positive outlook and vibes you always have in your videos.
Has to be one of the most beautiful strats I've ever seen..
That colour 🤟. I think you should of put a single coil in the middle though, but it's a custom and your choice. Awesome looking guitar. 🏴🇬🇧
I like the knobs.
That guitar looks awesome! Would it be possible to communicate more or less how much it cost to build it yourself compared to buying it all done?
Absolutely gorgeous leave it as it is! It is stunningly, beautiful, great job!
You have convinced me Darrell to put together and build my own Strat I have been thinking about it for a while. I did pay attention on where you got your parts from and I have saved this video. Thanks.
That is a beautiful build.👍😎
Black knobs. 100%. It’s too much with those three additional trim elements, and breaks the black hole Darth Vader look. The in line neck aesthetic works better from a design perspective. One of the most beautiful guitars I’ve seen in a while. Great build.
I totally agree...
My guess for the cost: ~$1600. Breakdown:
body: ~600
neck: ~400
tuners: 80
pickups: 300
bridge: 90
misc hardware (pots, knobs, pickguard, selector, etc.): 100
I'm really impressed. I mean come on! It's pretty hard to assemble a guitar and demonstrate it simultaneously. Well done.
I haven't been impressed by the look of a strat in a long time. This might be the best looking one I've ever seen.
You can also use copper tape in the routed areas and the back of the pickguard.
@@adventurer3645+1 everyone says the paint is better but I've heard too many where the copper tape is the only thing that worked.
2 outer springs should be straight so the springs have equal tension, with the outer springs angled the middle one doesn’t have the same tension as the other 2
Love the color on the nobs and the pick up's. Sounds great!
That is the most beautiful Strat in the world for me.
No strap buttons?
+dvanhandel96 🙁 I totally forgot about them! 😄
Darrell Braun Guitar It happens to the best of us. Still a super sweet build, glad you enjoy it
:)
Guitars does look better without any strap button lol :D
It's a SSS guitar Sitdown Super Strat.
How expensive was the build overall?
I would like to know that too. It depends on how much discount he got from Warmouth and others and if he things cheaper on ebay but I checked warmoth website and the body itself is around $400 to $500 itself. So my guess would be at least $800 because the hipshot tuners are $70 and hipshot bridge/block is $150 (i looked at the hipshot website). There's also cost of the pickups. The small things like jack, wires, buttons doesn't cost much
I would say 1000 to 1100
He probably got all the part except neck and body for free for promotional reasons.
Ed Is Sick maybe but for us it would probably be a pretty spendy build
You can get a great DIY-Superstrat,that plays and sounds as good as boutique one,for really cheap,if you're willing to do some work or know somebody, with the know-how to help you.A friend build a Jake E.Lee inspired superstrat, for one of his students for little less then 800 Euros(he and the kid did the work).Charvel sells a Jake E.Lee sign. model for over 3,500 Euros!!
IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIISIISIS
Pretty guitar, nice job. The neck has the perfect shape, more slim like a Charvels. Putting a locking nut on a strat is tough due to the angle so the roller nut is cool.
Gorgeous. Leave the knobs. More Abalone the better. I had those on my Carvin with Abalone blocks.
