      Those videos of the wood drying and seasoning are going to be boring.
      DIY one off builders are well advised to use old wood, architectural salvage or old solid wood furniture from the salvation army is good. That way it's really well seasoned. Old pianos and organs can also be good, church pews and lecterns too, they give that real holy tone....seriously, any old wood besides white pine or oak is worth trying.

    Just a little tip for future builds. When making new holes for screws through a finish, run the drill bit in reverse. This causes an easy and slow cut because the bit will act more like a reamer and the blades will be pushing away and this will keep the blades from grabbing the finish and pulling up causing chipping. Once into the wood set drill for normal cutting/drilling direction. Works also for opening holes for tuners and/or tuner bushings with the exception of not setting drill to cut at any time. Just using bit as a reamer. Harbor freight sells a tapered reamer for about $4 and does a decent job. Congrats and nice build !

      That's a tough poll. I'm torn between the Chrome tele and the zebrawood. the strat knobs just look out of place for that build. The chome is good for color balance across the look of the guitar but the Zebrawood has this uniformity to the appearance that makes it pop. it's a beautiful guitar though. and that "tele" mode has a nice sound to it.

    I’ve been blown away by this channel. I don’t even play guitar very much! Darrell has an enthusiasm for his craft & a style of presentation that I’ve gravitated towards since I started to check out guitars on RUclips. His style is represented in the choices he makes in presenting what he does to his audience. It even is reflected in the instrumental choices he makes for the videos. Braun is not the best guitar player I’ve ever seen on RUclips, but he certainly the one with the best taste in the instrumentals that are at the core of his videos. He never lets you forget that building a guitar is done in service of its eventual player, but that building a guitar is an art form onto itself. I’ve found that watching. Darrell Build a guitar is one of the most relaxing things I’ve found on RUclips. That probably speaks more to my weirdness than his presentation, but it’s a useful function for these videos to serve. I’m a bass player, and I’d like to see Darrell tackle a build of a cross-brand bass. Hopefully that will eventually come to pass. I’m pretty much hooked. I hope that we are able to watch Darrel do his thing for years to come. I hope that RUclips realizes that he’s a treasure.

      I liked the tele knobs a lot. The zebrawood is a great choice, but the grain doesn’t really match the body wood. I imagine that finding something like that is either very expensive or not available. Same thing with the pickups. I should explain that I’m somewhat confused compulsive about matching things. I make no apologies!:). The tele knobs would have set off the other chrome touches on the finished product.

Soldering is not my strong suit, so learning of wiring set ups that are solderless makes the world of difference to folks like me. I simply LOVE your guitar & your videos as well. From a super fan in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

    I was inspired by the strat build you did before this guitar and made my own this year using the obsidian wire strat blender kit and a warmoth neck and body. I ran into the same problems you did in this video with fitting the electronics in the body as well as the pick guard not lining up with the neck (although I knew that would happen because I chose to get the body routed for a Tele style neck.) These were super easy fixes though and it was so rewarding plugging it in and playing after putting all of my carefully chosen pieces together. It’s also so worth it to choose the exact look with the wood and finish and hardware parts of your instrument that makes you want to pick it up every time you see it.

    Great build, but my best advice would be to keep your switch and pickup configuration the standard, but install a Gilmour mod which is a small switch that independently activates the neck pickup so you can run the neck and bridge or all 3 if you want. It’s a cheap mod and I do it on my strat copies and any that I can hotrod for my friends

    • @rohadtanyad8908
      @rohadtanyad8908 5 лет назад +7

      i just put it on a push push switch on the neck tone pot. much better than adding a separate switch.

    • @akc5150
      @akc5150 5 лет назад +1

      rohadt Anyad Was going to say that exact same thing! Sounds good as it is, but with the Gilmour mod you keep ALL the 'standard' options PLUS you can get neck n bridge or even all 3 at the same time. I always do it to Strat style git boxes and the push/pull pot makes it totally invisible and reversible.

    • @rohadtanyad8908
      @rohadtanyad8908 5 лет назад +2

      akc5150 akc, a push pull pot to me is horrible. especially with strat style knobs, pulling up is a chore. a push push knob is much better. you just tap it. i don't know why everyone installs push pull, it makes no sense to me.

    • @akc5150
      @akc5150 5 лет назад +1

      rohadt Anyad I agree..... to a certain extent. With a push/pull at least you have an instant visual cue as to where you are set... With push/push it's easier to get it wrong from time to time......Unless there are push/push pots that pop up?

      Google guitar shielding paint. Right off Stewmac sells it in large cans for $70USD. You can pick up smaller containers for around $12USD.

    I would love to see the parts list, vendors, and prices. If you can put all these premiere parts together for less than a production Fender, I would be amazed, and a convert.

    • @mattevans5812
      @mattevans5812 5 лет назад

      I added it up from the vendor websites after the parts list video he made of this guitar last week
      Body $445
      Neck $257
      pickups $245
      trem $180
      tuners 140
      electrics $99
      sub total $1366 US without pick guard, knobs, studs, neck plate so add about another $100 unless i missed something big.

    It’s odd that I’m such a fan of simple black knobs. Those wood ones are your obvious choice though :-) and I think most people would agree. Awesome build as always my brother. I’m gonna save a wad of cash, sent it to you and let you make something awesome like this for me, I swear. Every build is cooler than the last.

    I feel compelled to say even though I don't really enjoy the character you play on your RUclips videos I still thinkn that the guitar you built here is awesome and you made it sound right ! That's cool !

    Next, tele pickups in a strat body please

    • @duosonic391
      @duosonic391 5 лет назад

      I agree. The current build here is awesome looking and sounding. But would like to see the reverse, tele pickups and guard on strat body, which of Fender's parallel universe series interests me most.

      May as well put in a request for the 'other' configuration that I'm currently nutting out :D - Jazzmaster pickups in a Strat body, please. I'm trying it with a Strat body+pickguard cut for humbuckers at neck+bridge... but will cut custom pickguard eventually as Jazzmaster pup at neck overlaps edge of pickguard (but is inside body Ok with some dremmelling).

      I did a squier with a super hot mustang S pickup in the neck, a Tele lipstick pickup in the middle and a pretty hot strat S pickup in the bridge. Changed a pot and wired it to tone both the neck and bridge with the original small pot going to the lipstick tone. Sounds awesome with the 5-way in the 2 and 4 position.

      Yes! I want a strat body with tele pickups, tele neck and hardtail of course. The strat body fits me much better than the tele, but it should be made of basswood, or semi-hollow for lightness. A Teltocaster.

      Never give up! Especially not when your fingers hurt and hurt more (but learn the right technique right from the start!). Just keep going because the first year is the toughest. The time following will only bring you satisfaction you've never known. To my humble opinion a guitar is one of the few instruments that can make your heart speak every language possible. The only thing a guitar wants from you to be loyal is that you practice over and over again. If you know how loyal a dog can be, you know what I mean.
