- Texas & Pacific Railroad #610 came home from the Southern RR and is in process of negotiating the curve to go into the new building at the Quartermaster Depot is southern Fort Worth, Texas. She had been stored in the yard at the GSA for about a year, due to having to re-align the track to allow the engine to be able to make it around the curve and construction of a building to be her new home. This final move occurred in @ February 1982

Glad I found this - thank you! I was at the QM depot the night they backed 610 out to pull the American Freedom Train to Dallas and on in 1976. Only had a cassette tape recorder, but I remember the echo of that magnificent whistle in the night! Wow!

Brings back some wonderful memories. When I was a kid of six our family lived alongside the old Great Northern and SP&S tracks and siding rails south of Spokane, WA at a town called Marshall. We never got tired of watching those old locomotives or listening for their whistles. Just about everyone living there worked for the railroad. Those are days I wouldn't mind going back to visit.
To this day I still wait for somebody with the heart to put life back in her.

It’s unfortunately unlikely. Due to its weight and size very few places could accommodate the engine and few are willing to put the money into doing it

Texas and Pacific 610 was coming home in 1982.
I was there that day.
The biggest problem the 610 faced while operating for the freedom train and then on the Southern was lack of speed due to its 63" drivers and heavy counterbalancing. Modern steam excursions on the mainline work best if the locomotive can maintain 60mph for hours on end. Sure, lots of excursion lines operate slower but with smaller locomotives. 610 is a powerful brute, supposedly was the equal of two SD24's but a smaller operation doesn't need that kind of power. Smaller engines on the Texas State railroad also get better fuel economy. Also, it has a really long wheelbase making curve taking difficult if not dangerous. 610 is the sole survivor of Will Woodards early superpower series.
Actually after the rebuild in 1937-1940 they had upgrades to the rods and overall balance and were approved for operations to 70 mph. At times during heavy passenger periods and for troop trains they where used in passenger service. Fort Worth to El Paso I think would qualify as a little jaunt. The #610 either proceeded #4449 or followed her and had no issues on curves in Texas. The issue in this film was that this was the first time for the engine to go through this curve that was laid specifically to get to the newly built train shed from the Santa Fe tracks in the GSA yard. This yard if I remember correctly was serviced with CF7's and government SW's. #610 had no issue navigating the track into the yard from the Santa Fe spur from the north / south mainline. She would work fine as a Fallen Flag for Union Pacific, but doubt that would ever happen... but it would be a glorious sight!!! Neil

I didn't realize that! Sure, no problem on the mainline curve, but I thought the Southern felt she was too slow. Anyway, I'm a big fan of all steam, just wished one of the Santa Fe 5000's would be restored to operation.

Got your name wrong in my last post. Anyway, are they going to try and make it run? From an article I once read in Trains the 5000 was patterned after the C&O 2-10-4's. One reason the later 5001 and 5011 classes had 74 " drivers instead of 69" were for better balancing. The 5000's are my favorite locomotives!

Stan, Personally I do not know much, but from what I have read Santa Fe wanted the frames and cylinders cast as one piece, because of something like 141,000 lbs of force put out by the piston rods. The 5000 madam Queen up in Amarillo, looks like it is caught between a rock and a hard place, The group trying to restore it seems to be underfunded, and then the city is trying to sell it out from under them even though they are trying to restore it, you can glean some information from their website and other from googling it. Time will tell if it ever happens. someone has said they have been in conversations with the crew restoring #2926? They are making good progress on their engine 2926.us/ Neil
Technically yes, the building was in Fort Worth for this video, but the building was moved to Palestine, texas where she and the building reside today!
Yeah. "steamboat whistle" is just a nickname for low sounding whistles, like the ones used on the I.C., Frisco, UP, ect. Sorry to hear about your father passing in 1982.

Luke S Chances of that are nonexistent. It’s too big and since it’s long with a rigid frame, places to run it are severely limited.
Well it's definitely some sort of "steamboat" whistle. But I never heard one squeal like it was 2 whistles built as one before lol

While I do not know all the details... After she pulled the Freedom Train through Texas, she was leased to the Southern to pull excursion trains. When she was returned from lease her 1472 boiler inspection was due and her tires were getting to the point where it was time to replace them... a major expense. She was put in storage at the GSA in Fort Worth. a few years later the GSA said that they were allowing a post office building to be built on the property and that the #610 and the other associated cars had to go. With no substantial financial backing available options were few and far between. UP was not interested due to her being from a fallen flag... the Texas State RR offered a place for her and her building. She was towed dead to Palestine, Texas. That is where she will most likely reside forever. September 23rd and 24th of 2017 she will be pulled out for a photo opportunity at 8:00 am.
For anything different to happen someone would need some deep pockets, and permission to run on someone's mainline. Neil

@@jerredwayne8401 Railroads that have been abandoned or adsorbed/bought out by another RR. Example... T&P was bought by Missouri Pacific... then they were bought out by Union Pacific. So T&P and MP are fallen flags. Neil

I personally shot this video with the assistance of Clayton Wilson my best friend standing on the ladder we brought from home in the freezing cold with a RCA VHS camcorder... unfortunately in the 6 hour mode because we were short on cash for VHS tapes and produced this video.
