Is ADHD a Disability? (Hunter Gatherer Theory)

  • Is ADHD a disability? What might make it a disability?
    In many schools ADHD is considered an emotional disturbance. Not a disability.
    If you want to read more on the matter. amzn.to/2OWYRrb
    Based on the hunter & gatherer theory, ADHD is not a disorder. Thanks to Thom Hartmann, a scientist who was studying adhd a long time ago, a evolutionary explanation has been formulated. We in fact inherited the brain functions from our ancestors, the hunters.
    However, since more farmers existed than hunters, we now live in a world that is shaped by farmers. A world in which we don't fit in, and farmers think we have a "disorder", simply because we don't think like them.

    So instead of trying to label people as having a mental disorder, why can't we just alter or broaden our educational system so we can teach different kinds of people with different kinds of mental learning abilities instead of marginalizing people that are actually more capable of dealing with change & making them feel as though they are disadvantaged? This theory still holds through because: gathering.
      Even though recent paleo research shows that women hunted too. Being mostly gatherers required the same ADHD skills as hunting but with less energy bursts involved and more multitasking.

      I’m a woman in her 50’s with combined type. Yet I know that I was extremely tilted toward hyperactive as a child. It makes me believe that many of us females also have been masking, leading to anxiety, which can seem like an internal hyperactive state. That’s what I feel happened to me, and only started to heal once I realized I had a lot repressed trauma that was causing chronic inflammation and immunodeficiency issues. Now I’m getting back to my original roots, and most importantly, my body and senses. I lived solely in my head for years, and it made me ill. Using the Hunter Vs Farmer theory has been empowering on all levels. We all need to trust our nervous systems instead of labeling them as disordered. I appreciate the sentiment and I think its cool you see it like that. Personally I've got pretty severe ADHD (PI) and the constant brain fog, and inability to no only do work but pursue any hobbies that aren't immediately stimulating (writing, music production, even slow rpgs and arty games). I also hate the extent that 'boredom' hurts and that I constantly interrupt people. Maybe it's a the extent of mine, or it's a PI thing, but in the industrialised society we live in, it certainly feels like a disability and it bloody sucks, and the understimulation intolerance would still suck regardless of the time period. I personally find the whole 'ADHD is a superpower' narrative quite devalidating (not suggesting that was your point, I was just reminded of it)
    Maybe it would have been useful back then, particularly predominantly and combined types, but I consider it 'maladaptive', in the way the something like dissociative identity disorder is a survival mechanism for abused children but becomes an issue later on in life (but on an evolutionary scale rather than an individual level).
    Also, it's worth noting that typically women aren't diagnosed with ADHD as often because typically externally manifests differently for them (particularly in childhood) and is more of an underdiagnosis thing than a prevalence thing. AFAIK recent science suggests its a much closer gender split than we previously thought.
    That's just my perspective though and it was great video nonetheless!
    PS. On a another note, does anyone else with ADHD find they use way to many subclauses and wish you could put brackets inside brackets. Like I wanted to say I couldn't finish Witcher 3 and I had to get stoned to play Journey, but I couldn't make it work grammatically. Also crazy amounts of run-on sentences.

    • @yourlocaltoad5102
      @yourlocaltoad5102 3 года назад +5

      Yeah dude, I agree to pretty much your whole comment and I can totally relate to making too many subclauses and wanting to put brackets into brackets.
      Sometimes I just feel that telling a story or explaining something without giving all the necessary side information, context, explanations, etc won’t work and so I add all these subclauses.
      I talked about this with the people around me and apparently, most people don’t actually care about all this side information and don’t want to understand something in all it’s detail. Having a surface level understanding or one that relies on assumptions to fill in the holes that stem from a lack of information seems to be enough for most people.
      Apparently it’s just a difference in how we understand things and how neurotypical people understand them.

    • @joelwilcox5424
      @joelwilcox5424 3 года назад +2

      @@yourlocaltoad5102 Yeah, that's definitely it! I always provide wayyy too much information. I suspect related to that being how we think and the fact I tend to type and think concurrently. Out of curiosity, is that what you do, or do you think of a sentence before typing it (and same with talking)?
      Speaking of too much information, it's been a interesting experience learning how many of my quirks and behaviours are common amongst those with ADHD, and it seems being an 'fact junkie' is pretty common, even for obscure and pointless shit. I spend at least 3 hours on wikipedia a day, either sporadically when I get distracted from something important by sudden curiosity or on a hyperfocused bender that lasts 5 hours. I'll forget to brush my teeth but if you need to know who invented the sewing machine, I got you.
      I think we ADHDers need learn to master the semicolon, it seems handy.

    This is a logical explanation. With ADHD you are constantly aware of your environment. Every sound, every voice you can in a fragment of a second recognize it as threathening and you are co stantly aware of your environment and scan it for dangers. If you on hunt you must be aware and alert of every sou d of an animal jumping up or a prey that you seek to slay to bring food back to your tribe. You may find people with ADHD totally absorbed by doing things in these days translates to money as we now dont need to sit down alerted for weeks waiting for prey to accure. When you seem someone absorbed in gambling or games you can just see it as they are on hunt and they observe, calculate and wait for weeks to strike. When you meet someone with ADHD he is probably almost friendly and ki d but if it goes to action he is fast to react with explosivity like a lightning and it goes fast. The hunters could not consider a situation for minutes or days inspite of an animal appear and attack but must be fast to react with aggtesivity and furiosity as now called impulsivity. It saved lives and maybe we should not be alive otherwise.

    I've recently begun to consider hunting for meat since my wife and I have gone primarily plant based and don't want to support industrialized meat. See: Amazon rainforest destruction for cattle ranching.
    I've not personally been hunting since I was a kid and I didn't actually shoot anything. Having ADHD in a modern society makes you feel out of place and since the pandemic I've started to feel an even stronger pull towards nature. Being able to reconnect with our natural environment and the prospect of being able to utilize my primal urges to my advantage has a romance about it, especially when it aligns with my ideals of environmental conservation.
    Eventually I'll be able to set aside time to actually go hunting and see how my mind performs. Great video by the way!

    Thank you so much for this!! This is the most positive take on ADHD I've ever seen. I'm crying, because this makes me feel validated and not actually broken. Just demonized in a world run by neurotypicals for neurotypicals.
    I'm down for being a hunter. I'd add artist to this, since we have a tendency to start something hands on and artistic and forget to eat, sleep, pee, whatever. We get into the zone and that's it. We check out. We live there now. Do not disturb. Leave me and my pottery alone. Me and my flute did nothing to you, farmers. Leave me be.
    Back then, we would have been totally into what we did. It would also mean we didn't have to be around other people aside from our hunting party, so we wouldn't have to endure farmers trash talking hunters.
    Not only do I like this theory that our brains were actually useful, but you kept it entertaining, and moving along at a pace that kept my interest. Thank you. :D
    It's hard to exist in a world that's not meant for us.
    It makes total sense that we're hunters! You want something found? Find an ADHD person hyperfixating on it.
    I still go on the hunt. It's called The Mall. :)
    I did this recently to find one exact puffer vest. It went to three different malls, and looked online before finding it in another mall, and drove there to pick it up in one size while I waited for another size I ordered to arrive. I took the size that didn't fit back to the store today - driving all the way back to that same mall. To me? Worth it. I have hunted down the perfect puffer, and I love it. :)
    When I get it in my head to find one specific item, literally nothing else matters. I will travel to multiple locations to find what I want. This also goes for searching online for that exact thing, and then being 1000% with driving to the location to pick it up, or drive to a distant location to experience something.
    I did this last spring with mining. I drove over 100 miles just to dig in the dirt looking for crystals. I found some. :)

      I know this is old, but here in this video it claims that people with ADHD were the hunters, which would imply that everyone else was a gatherer or did other things, which would check out since in hunter gatherer societies hunts are not an everyday thing, and can go weeks or eve months without a hunt and live just fine thanks to everyone else. It’s a system where everyone benefits eachother: when there is a hunt, people with ADHD would hunt, when there is no hunt, everyone else would contribute :)

    I was diagnosed with the non hyperactive type (314.00 in DSM) and I never felt an urge to hunt. I just can't stay still that long. I also get grossed out too easily to do anything other than the shooting aspect of hunting. It is possible that I may have a different but similar disorder. It is also possible that ADD and ADHD are a little more mysterious than we realize.

    I love the idea that we were hunters and I agree with most of your points but that doesnt make it "non-disorder" It is disorder since we need medication to adapt in many features of modern society. Maybe for the athletes it may apply but when I was a child I had so many obstacles because I didn't know I had ADHD. I thought I'm so messed up. Lazy and idiot and it lead to my depression and anxiety. Fear of failure and low self-esteem is still there. The medication does wonders for many of us and it did for me. As long as we need medication to modify our maladaptive behaviour it will stay as disorder imo.

    • @adhdvision
      @adhdvision  4 года назад +6

      Hey, Philip, thanks for the comment. I am really glad medication was able to help you! The reason I made this video was just to kind of get people to think about their disorder a bit differently i.e. that there is nothing fundamentaly WRONG with your brain, but that it has just not evolved fast enough with the world around us. This shift in thinking helped me to personally realise that adhd is actually something natural, making me more confident. I'm hoping that perhaps this can be achieved for other like minded people, such as yourself, aswell!

      I agree that it can still be considered a disorder but not because you need medication. Society was mostly built to accommodate Neurotypical brains, not us divergents. I'm pro meds but you shouldn't take them because the world makes you belive you're sick, if that makes sense.

    • @philipkim9779
      @philipkim9779 3 года назад +2

      @@14DANESSJ I agree man. I take them to fit into the society that I belong tho. Thats something we have to compromise as I don't want to live off grid in the forest hunting and just living by myself in isolation. Most of job related work except athletes and artist require quiet long time of attention span without hyper active brain. That is why I take medication. I probably needed to find a job that is interesting and able to stimulate my brain enough that I don't need to take meds but I didn't know any better when I was a college student. So, I take my meds to fit into work environment and meditate to not to be controlled by impulses.

    I’m diagnosed ADHD, felt a little bored and uncomfortable in the “normal” circumstances. But as I’ve gotten older I’ve realised it’s the Hunter in me I used to call it the savage, I couldn’t control it it’s like HURRY UP WHAT ARE YOU DOING, I’m from a place that’s got a bad rep so I used to think it was that like an accent. But it’s deeper than that, I remember once I had a fight with 3 guys and it went in slow motion and I won believe it or not. Adhd has its good bits but it’s just the lack of sleep and friends ect that’s not so good. Oh well
