MP-01 actually has 3 versions, the original version from Takara, the 20th Anniversary version from Hasbro with the battle damage/shorter smoke stacks and a fully gold version the one that is displayed on the table is the 20th Anniversary version released in 2004
@@garrettdonnelly2907 I feel like jazz as well as dead end would need a liscense in order to have the curves like the cartoon. But Cliffjump, he could probably be fine wothout the liscense. Same for minerva.
This list is good for showing all the toys. Other than that, far too light on details and issues with these expensive toys. They mentioned the worst offenders (first Hot Rod and Hound) but forgot MP 44 Prime's knees, Sunstreaker's windshield, MP 11 Starscream's floppy waist that doesn't stay put, etc. Be aware before dropping big bucks on them. Too bad Takara didn't release some obvious characters like Jazz.
I agree. As good as MP44 looks, MP10 just looks amazing on the shelf. He just has so much presence. The toon accurate transformers often kind of blend into the background a bit.
I have around 300 TF figures, incl 3P. MP10 remains the highlight of my collection. Magic Square MP02 is the spiritual succesor to it, which I think is superior to MP44. A separarte KO version of MP44 with silver painted thighs, even came with some improvements.
Also cool video but doesn’t talk about the quality of the toys nearly as much as it should. A lot of the rankings just give an overview of the character, the repaints and what they transform into. Should’ve at least give a pro and con to each of them with respect to how they are as toys.
Soundblaster isn't a different character, it's Soundwave upgraded. Only cases where he WAS a separate character was the Netflix series and second IDW comics continuity where he was a botched clone of Soundwave.
The year of the sheep MP13 actually doesn't look that bad, I like the way the clear plastic looks paired with the orange bits. The problem is that clear plastic Transformers may as well be glass statues; so easily broken that you never ever play with them.
i finally let my masterpiece collection go for third party exclusive : i am truly amazed by how the Chinese are mastering the engineering and design all through.. figures look better in general, the scale is more accurate, they are more solid and posable. on the other hand, transformation is more difficult, and the instructions are pretty incomplete and unclear, but each mode looks pretty amazing. depending on the release, a novice would not say that the thing can transform so the whole looks smooth. even the most recent Takara Tomy releases, more and more expensive, are though far from perfect (the trainbots combine mode is a catastrophe...) whereas third parties get really close to... ...and they are cheaper... except maybe for brands like Fans Toys. but there, perfection does have a price.
I wish they kept going with Masterpiece to give us Unicron Trilogy moulds, mainly because all they’d have to do is reissue the originals since they’re already show accurate and I have always wanted Galaxy Convoy toy since I was a kid
MP8 and MP27 getting 5 out of 5s is wild... Grimlock should never be shorter than prime. Ironhide got a lot of criticism when it came out due to its beer belly rather than looking a bit more heroic/tough, and its diaper. I'm glad they both got OSKO'd with improvements. Actually, I even like the OSKOing of MP10 into MPP10 (arm to leg proportions better than original and the bigger height matches MP-1)
Very much appreciate this video. My only pushback is that MP-01 should not get a higher rating than MP-04. MP-04 is perfect in that it's complete and the largest OP on this video, MP-01 was perfect until we got a version with the trailer. Optimus without the trailer is only good in robot mode. MP-04 is 5+ stars. Similar reasoning is applied to the 2 versions of Ultra Magnus and Megatron. Megatron with out his shoulder stock and barrel extensions is not as good as complete Megs! Only my opinion!
MP 21R is a must have just to say you got Bumblebee and CliffJumper. The G version could be seen as a miss simply because Goldbug wasnt as popular as Bumblebee. Goldbug is an updated Bumblebee in the cartoon.
Had the first release of Rodimus Prime with the false front for Rodimus and the fragile joints. Ended up returning it. Then I bought the reissue and it still had some of the old problems like the finger joints still fell off and they still had that fake front I didn't like. Returned that also. I had bought the DX-9 Carry instead as my MP scale Rodimus. I agree with all of the rest of the rankings but will give MP-9 a 1 out of 5 as my only disagreement. However, I appreciate putting this video together.
MP04 is objectively the same as MP01 but with the accessories that should have been included. If you only have MP04 you dont need MP01, but if you only have MP01 you need MP04.
A great high level overview, shame you couldn’t have referenced the Hasbro releases too which had some differences, for example the Rodimus Prime figure released as Hotrod without trailer but including target master, and I’m sure MP52 is Starscream 3.0 as MP3 was v1, MP11 v2, MP52 v3. You also missed the already released MPG train bots and excluded the MPM movie line 😢
The + versions of figures are the cartoon accurate paint jobs. Some of the lettered releases are different characters completely MP12T is Tiger Tracks for example
Really good overview! Any chance you will go over the Hasbro MPs in a follow-up video? There's some interesting variations there that might be worth looking into.
MP-39 Sunstreaker would be my choice if i could choose one. Booth the car and robot mode is just stunning on him...especially if you compare him to his G1 toy 😂

12:29 actually, in the anime Transformers: The Headmasters, which is a sequel to the original Transformers cartoon, Soundwave and Soundblaster are the same character. During a one on one battle with his autobot rival Blaster, Soundwave was destroyed, but his Cassettes brought his head back to the decepticon base where he was then brought back to life as Soundblaster
Great overview of the line! I didn't realize they were ending this line, will be interesting to see what they do with the new MPG line. I was a young boy when cassettes were a thing but I definitely still remember them so Soundwave definitely brings back that nostalgia for me.
Seems like too long since ive bought an MP, I think Arcee or Hound, its sad, so many G1 characters not done, especially the likes of Jazz. Im 44 now and my kids the MPs but they are display items, but I think I am out of collecting masterpieces for now to be honest. Oh and I owned many a cassette player back in the day!! Soundwave and Shockwave are my fave MPs also MP 10 is solid as heck. I do feel the line has lost its way.
I always thought the G would stand for Grade, similar as to Gunpla's grading. That would encapsulate every TF on the MP pricepoint, including stuff like Masterpiece movie and Beast Wars series.
A part of me is sad you didn't include the Movie Masterpieces at the end. Also, why was price only a factor for Dinobot? I remember a lot of them being pretty expensive.
Five stars for MP-22?! That's ridiculous! Considering how limited articulation it has plus that eye-sore of a packpack, it shouldn't get more than three stars. Oh, and of course I grew up using a cassette player. It would have been quite difficult to listen to C-cassetes without it.
Despite mp1 and it's repaints and redecos looking off I still love him for the same reason I love g1 metroplex, they look so derpy But I'd rather get mp10 which is what I did, sold mp04 and got mp10 and never looked back... I'll never get mp44 I don't have another body to sell plus mp44 is the hunchback of cybertron with his backpack and plus mp45 also looks and plays like crap so ye don't exactly just show em from the front next time
As someone who was a kid when the first MP's were coming out and being fascinated with G1. Seeing how much it has changed is bittersweet, I buy more 3rd party now that I'm in my early 20's and have realized the flaws in the MP line still a dope video can't wait for the mpg line and how that affects future releases!
So wait….you gave mp1 a 5 star, but subtracted a star from mp4 because it comes with a trailer? Even though it’s the same figure? How did you come up with that? More accessories usually means better.
@aljndl she does living in Japan videos on her Patricia O'Connell, you really see her personality in those videos, so cool to see her review transformers
I am one of those people who grew up with cassette players, and while they didn't *exactly* look like Soundwave, a lot of them came close. While I don't have MP-13, I do have a Soundwave funko pop autographed by Soundwave's voice actor, Frank Welker.
You completely glossed over artfire. You didn’t mention his targetmaster or even the fact he was extremely rare in Japan. Being that hot rod is the only other one with a targetmaster I would not have considered him just a recolor of inferno.

I'm a 51y guy, and when Transformers dropped in 1984 I was 11y so yes I had a cassette player, the were made by Sony and we're called Walkman
Expensive stuff back then 😉
Huge Masterpiece fan. This is my favourite MP video, crazy to find this after years of collecting. Bravo.10/10 video... Nicely done
