How to be happy? The question humans have been trying to answer for millennia 🤔 For all the crazily sophisticated technology of the 21st century, our attitude to finding fulfilment is comically unadvanced. We are still in evolutionary terms pretty much cavemen. That means that our minds, spurred on by western ideals of success and social media-fuelled FOMO, conspire to make us unhappy - to ruin our lives 👺
So, what everyday habits do most of us have that are causing us to be way less fulfilled and happy than we should be? And once we've worked out what those habits are, what can we do to build a philosophy for a happy life?
Well, in this video, I unpack the 4 habits that I think are ruining our lives - those things we do that get us down over pretty much nothing. I run through the simple techniques I use to break down these bad habits and, in their place, to build up a happy way of life 😀
00:00 How You're Ruining Your Life
01:28 Unhappy Habit 1 - Focusing on outcomes
05:17 Unhappy Habit 2 - FOMO
07:08 Notion
08:19 Unhappy Habit 3 - Not seeing progress

About Me
I'm a lawyer, part-time RUclipsr, son, brother, startup founder, fiancé, black coffee drinker and plant dad. I graduated from Cambridge University (where I studied French and Spanish), topped my law school class and now work for a corporate law firm in London as a trainee solicitor (which takes up a lot of my time)!
Around that, I'm a big fan of discovering new ways of thinking, of balancing work with life, and of performing to the very best of my ability. Ohh, and being happy. And I try to share all that on this RUclips channel 😀
Fun fact: I believe we massively overplay the role of “natural talent” 😮 AND… I also believe that TOGETHER, WE ARE ALL CAPABLE OF POSITIVITY, PRODUCTIVITY AND SUCCESS.

You uploaded this video at the right time!
I was having a crisis of what I want in my life.
00:25 wow, really good salary 👏
Hey Liam, great video as usual. I tend to watch yours when I need to be more productive and focused. For some reason your content puts me into business mode :)
Can I mention one thing that does not quite work for me? It's the footage of stressed people (when you talk about struggles, problems etc). It makes sense as they serve as illustrations but when I come to youtube to learn something I'd rather not get even more stressed. What this footage comes along, I tend to look away waiting for it to finish. I wonder if it's the same for others? Hope you don't mind this, I love your work and your work ethic, it's inspiring.
I needed this video, Liam. I learned something about focusing on actions and not outcomes. I always set high expectations and struggle to be realistic. This tech resonates.
Thanks so much Jason!! Really appreciate it 😊
That thumbnail! Is that To Do List by Jack Edwards' "Ink Outside The Box"? Great to see you supporting another of my favourite RUclipsrs 🙂
Haha you finally talked about Notion !
Great video Liam
I appreciate your content
Have my Jurisprudence exam tomorrow. All my mind can think right now is Natural Law and its evolution.
good luck had mine last semester
@@frankienesarajah How did you do? My prof asked us to write "your own jurisprudence". F'ed.
@@ayushtripathi4620 did okay got a 2:1 equivalent and yeah that's a tricky one, profs seem to just kind of make stuff up when teaching it ahaha good luck tho
Hey Liam!
How do you combat the thoughts which prevents you from being happy even when your desires are met?
Ex: sometimes I exceed my expectations on an area of life but I quickly lose that sense of happiness and achievement by thinking that something bad will happen next to balance it out (which has often happened to me).
So how do I overcome this?
Thanks for your advicings
Could the cause of unhappiness be rooted in societal structures and not ourselves?
Well done on 200k subs😁
Thanks Shaun! 😃
Hey Liam. I’m a fairly new subscriber, but I’m really enjoying the content so far. I’ve even been scrolling through the back catalog. However! I would love know what phone case are you using in the b-roll shots.?
Hey Jamar! Thanks so much! It's a Pitaka phone case :)
@@liam.porritt Thanks so much!
Hi Liam! I was wondering if you could do a video with tips for corporate lawyers to deal with the worst task ever… billable hours 😖
Haha - I think this could possibly be a bit niche, but will see if I can make a video that includes tips around this / time management / keeping track of what you spend your time doing 😝
Can I get an example on focusing on your actions? I always feel like im focusing on the task at hand for most part but a part of me knows I'm doing it for the outcome. Maybe I'm doing both? Or most likely not understanding the statement
Hey Dexter - when you are doing something (e.g. working towards an exam) obviously you will be focused on that task in the moment. It’s okay to be doing that with the exam in mind, but I try to focus on what I will do (i.e. my actions) in the exam - so what I will write / how good the essay will be etc, rather than focusing on the grade I will get. When measuring your success, look more at how hard you worked / what you did to do well in your exams, rather than the results you get. When I finished my university exams, I was happy because I knew I had worked hard and done my best. I wasn’t massively nervous about my results, because those were out of my control. Hopefully that helps!
@@liam.porritt thank you for the great reply much appreciated!

Hare Krishna people say just chant hare krishna and be happy. On the surface it looks like it is working for them.
