  • I love a crochet bag, but I'm always a bit disappointed in how uncomfortable the straps are. I MAY have a tendency to fill my bags a bit full, which means the straps often dig in to my shoulder and can stretch out terribly.
In my this tutorial, I show you how to crochet your handle around a cord to reinforce it and make your bag more sturdy and comfortable to use; even if you're an over packer, like me!
    Instructions:
Tape off the end of your cord and trim
Ch the amount of sts you need to work around the cord, plus one
Sc in 2nd ch from the hook and across each ch
Join with slst and place a sc in each sc continuously around without joining each round.
After a few rounds, place the cord in the center.
Continue working in continuous rounds until you've reached the length of your handle or strap.
    Place strap through the bag.
Sew the ends of the cord together.
Sew the ends of the crochet fabric together.

That's a wonderful idea; it would be great if you would demonstrate attaching it to a bag.

Thank you. Just what I need for my Tunisian bags. I already have the different size cords in my sewing stash.

What type/ size cord did you use and how do you attach to a bag? Did you use tassel caps?

I used upholstery cord. For this bag it was a continuous cord so I sewed the ends together and ran them through the top of the bag. This is the Bayla Beach Bag. Using tassel caps is a great idea! You could also work the ends longer than the cord and sew them to the outside of inside of the top of the bag!

Can you create your own cord with multiple strands of yarn and perhaps plaiting it? Just thinking for those of us like me who have everything in their stash except cord, and simply refuse to wait until the shops open come morning? lol. Lovely video, wonderful idea x

Ooo, what an interesting idea. You could certainly give it a try. The thing I love about working around the cord is that it doesn't stretch. Putting yarn inside would give it bulk, but may not fix the stretching problem. Let me know what you try. I'd love to know how it turns out!
