Since 2011, Radiohead has been implementing the double drummer thing, mainly to perform acoustic and electronic drum parts, sometimes complex polyrhythmic dabblings too!

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard is the first band I became aware of as having two drummers, and their great breadth of material spanning a wide range of genres and styles showcases the double drummer phenomenon in a variety of musical contexts.
Another band that does double drummers really well is king gizzard and the lizard wizard, I'm sure you would enjoy their stuff if you've never checked them out
Favorite duo would be Phil Collins and Chester Thompson. I love the In the Cage medley they did with Cinema Show and In This Quiet Earth. Absolutely massive sound, and amazing cooperation
Early king gizz was knock off oh sees is what this guy is trying to say. They're both amazing bands, just oh sees deserve WAY more attention than they have now
In some liner notes I read, Ralph Humphrey briefly talked about the challenges of learning to play with Chester Thompson in Zappa's band, due to their backgrounds - Humphrey was used to playing in big bands like the Don Ellis Orchestra, and Thompson was used to smaller combos playing R&B, so their sense of time differed and they had to put in some effort to synchronise. Worked out well, though!
The Boredoms played with 2 or more drummers since the 80s. Starting out as a noise rock/punk/no wave band with two drummers they transformed into some sort of psychedelic tribal neo-kraut band that is very centered around the beats. They've been regularly gigging with 3 to 8 drummers and did single shows with 77 and 88 drummers. This live clip also features lots of guitar players. Skip to around 8 minutes if you don't care about the shredding and crowd interaction. (and yes, that is a 7 necked guitar on stage) ruclips.net/video/iJDdYnI2-Ag/видео.html
Dude! You're the man! Much love to you! Watching you and Josh do your thing was definitely worth it! Thanks a bunch for coming down to India! Next time Imma come to you!
just a thought, set the drums up in a huge pit so that the drummers can almost touch each other's backs, so the sound from each other will be coming from behind. audio engineer's nightmare but for the musicians...?
I realize they don’t have 2 drum kits, but how about salsa and timba rhythm sections? With timbales/drum sets, congas, and often bongos and auxiliary percussionists
A part of me wonders how it works, but I know what it’s like to lock in with a musician you know really well, me and my pianist have been playing for years and we know each other’s playing inside out, so I can understand that with enough time double drumming would develop into an awesome dynamic.
more stuff with 3 Drummers: Guard Nielssons Super Sonic Orchestra - great art-jazz-mayhem from Scandinavia. Is there a video somewhere of a complete performance from this tour? (just one song would be already great) - asking for my students ;-)
The first band I noticed having double drums was Holy Fuck, and its just because it was 1 of the first concerts I went to, and I just assumed it was because they were already doing a bunch of whacky things, but came looking for a video on this topic after seeing a set by Sons of Kemet.
I saw kamasi Washington's band with 2 drummers very recently. I sat right over Ronald bruner jr's set so I didnt really get into what Tony austin was doing, but they are both beasts. So tight, and they are just different enough.
I always thought it was just about dividing roles, whoever's better at playing pocket plays pocket and whoever has more creative fills/plays around with the song does that the whole time
That is one great looking video, and I really enjoyed the insight and perspective. I can definitely see that it would be more inspiring for the musicians to play with other cool people and creative musicians. For me as a listener, though, personally I never really feel the second drummer. That is 100% just my own experience, but I often even find the second guitar in a rock band offsetting. Depending on the composition you may need fewer or more people to play it in a way that is satisfying, but at a certain point I find I can hear the limitations put on the other musicians by an added instrument more prominently than what that instrument is able to add. Where that point is, though, is of course rather subjective.
How has no one brought up the fact that King Crimson has multiple drummers multiple times. Early Larks era King Crimson had 2 drummers. Double Trio era had 2 drummers. 2008 Tour had 2 drummers. Seven Headed Beast had 3 drummers!
please please what's the song at 3:33? I've seen people say it's Ascent by Shubh Saran but when I go listen to that song it sounds entirely different? It's also at 13:00.
Having two drummers in one band is absolutely pointless if the two are playing the exact same thing (ie Thee Oh Sees) but when the two drummers are both complimenting the music in two completely different, unique ways (ie Swans, Tortoise) it works. More than half the time tho, might as well just have one drummer and one percussionist.
Cool concept but I don't hear anything that requires two drummers. If I were to listen to just the audio without video, I would never believe that there were two of them. So much untapped potential.
Have never seen double drummer bands that I thought made any sense-- the concept is flawed,,,, except maybe in free Jazz,,, two drummers might make sense in that context-- It’s EASY to see why rather than a second drummer you would hire a percussionist instead- that combination makes perfect sense.
Never liked 2+ drummers, they tend to want to play in sync, but that is stupidly difficult so every other stoke sound unintentionally doubled. Don't sync, just play two different things.
Have you listened to king crimson's 3 drummers? They do some mad stuff.
Yeah, their Live in Toronto is astounding when it comes to drumming!
It's fun, it's funny, and it sounds good.
Saw them in Toronto as well. Pretty mindblowing.

Melvins were great when they had 2 drummers. They still are but they were then too! Same when they had 2 bassists as well!
If I remember correctly, the 2nd drummer was from Big Business, and that dude slays!
As proven by Melvins and King Gizzard, stoner rock with double drums became much much crushingly heavy it became one of my favorite style of music.
Melvins? Yeah, they're great, like Green Jellÿ. Let me tell you a little tale...

One drummer follows the rhythm from the melodic instruments, the other from the vocals.
