This is why I love your channel. As a beginner, I've learned more useful and practical things from you, than about anyone else on RUclips. Thank you. Now if I could find out where you got your brush stands.
I’ve tried quite a few nail polishes also. The OPI line has some amazing colors. I live in Ft Lauderdale so I can look at nail polish in Ulta without getting any strange looks😳. The best part of nail polish is the chameleon or mystic colors. They’re expensive to buy in almost any form of car or model paint but in nail polish they’re only a few dollars and by the time you reduce them, you can usually get enough to paint a 1/24 car model. That blue and purple you have, look amazing.
Really happy I came across this vid, I have a ton of old bottles of nail polish in all sorts of crazy colors I've never seen at the hobby store. Tried out an anodized aluminum sort of green over top of a dark purple base and it is incredible! Still lets a tiny bit of the color underneath through at certain angles.
i've always wondered about this! i saw some that sells stuffs like chrome and black chrome nail polish that might be a really nice alternative to actual chrome paints
Well this was really interesting. I have to admit that it would never have occurred to me to have tried nail polish in my airbrush, have to say some of the results look very impressive.
I've been using a 70/30 ratio of thinner to paint. I've found that Odorless Mineral Spirits works nicely. I've sprayed at 30psi in really light mist coats and build a finish. I typically spray over a silver or gold base coat as these colors are really transparent, treating them like a candy color :). Great video!
That's awesome to know. I'm just starting out with airbrushing and not sure of anything really. I do have a gallon Oderless Mineral Spirits and wasn't sure if I could use it or not so I'm glad I read through the comment section. Thanks for the help
I've used nail polish airbrushed for quite a few years! Works great for specific metallics! My absolute favorite brands are ESSIE and OPI. Expensive ones! The biggest disadvantages are: they like to discontinue colors and no longer have suitable replacements! Also, I can't stand the color names, haha, terrible dad joke puns for the color names! I use walmart purchased lacquer thinner to thin as well as clean the airbrush. My favorite metallic was NO PLACE LIKE CHROME, lol
Great video, I have heard about nail polish being used before but never tried it. This video inspired me to go to the dollar store and pick one up (One of the ones you had actually the purple Lets go by Sinful Colors) I sprayed a spoon and was really happy with the results! Just need to test my Mr. Hobby Super Clear Gloss on it!
Here's a tip to save even more: in the Walmart Paint department, Jasco/Kleen-Strip acetone sells for $9.64 per quart (where I am) and Rust-Oleum acetone sells for $11.44/qt. But in the Beauty department, Onyx Professional 100% Pure Acetone is $2.53 per pint. Two pints equals 1 quart, so $5.06 per quart. Just be sure it's the 100% pure and not just "Nail Polish Remover".
It's been a long time since I've ordered any (I used to use it to lift the ink from official MTG and Pokemon cards, then design my own customs with the blank foil cards), but I can confirm that this was the case. I always bought Onyx Professional in 16 oz. (1 pint) bottles, and while it's been a couple years, they were $2.48 per bottle then on Amazon. They cost about $9 per pint on Amazon now, though (luckily I have a back stock of 4 unopened bottles from back then). I'll have to check my local Wally World to see their pricing, though. If you can get it for 2.53 there, then I sure as hell won't ever restock through Amazon.
Just bought an OPI color for a motorcycle I want to build. “Chicago champagne toast”. So, 1-1 mix with a .5 needle at 15-20 psi in a grex. Will give it a shot. Have a peaceful weekend.
Can you do a video on eye shadow.... It is great to use like pastels over metal finishes and a huge range of colours... There are a few other uses for them by adding into either gloss or matt clear coats
I have a bottle of automotive touchup paint that I'm really curious if it would work on a model or through an airbrush. No idea what it's made of but smells more volatile than acrylic.

What would you guys recommend for a starter air brush set up? It would only be used a couple times a year due to time restrain but want to get into the hobby. Thanks you.
Nice! There are some interesting colors for sure. I watched a guy that did a chrome test that had a UV set nail polish and powder set that looks awesome and had a gold like you were looking for. I think he got the powders and UV wet clear off Amazon.

Just curious if you tried the Leveling thinner with the nail polishes ? I'm thinking that slightly slower flash time might lead to added gloss. Not that this is bad as is mind you, just curious.
@@barbatosrex9473 I'll have to try it, I notice that OPI and Beauty Secrets nail thinner has only a couple or three ingredients which a couple are in Mr Leveling. Thanks again Rex, for yet another great tip. One question though. Am I the only one that feels a little self-conscious rifling through the nail polish racks between the ladies? Heaven forbid if we both reach for the last bottle of "Let's Talk"!
Why’s your air filter pointed the opposite way in the booth with the arrow out? With nail polish a lot of the metallics are sheer unless you buy the expensive brands, the flakes are the color and the pigment is minimal. The clears that are labeled as base, like the one you used in the video, are thin enough to spray with no thinning even though you thinned yours.
Great video, just a shame that you went off at a tangent. Would have een nice t have seen how the clear had worked over the 3 that you had started with.
I'm not going to lie, but I'm not too impressed with the results from this test. The blue and purple look kinda nice over black, but only if you're looking for a sort of subtle black colorshift effect. (Black with a slight color when looking at it in certain angles). But... I wonder what they'd look like over silver/chrome? Maybe that would result in something more gorgeous? A candy effect, maybe? Brushed on, they look great though!!
The results are excellent in regards to the colour but the metallic flake is just too course for most scale modeling applications. Even on 1/2" scale cars the flake is approaching 1/4" particles which isn't realistic in the least. But for solid colours, sure looks good - certainly over a dark base.
The purple over the black looks amazing, think that was my favorite.
