There's an episode of BTAS where Bruce Wayne fights his shareholders to allow his company to sell pharmaceuticals at production cost. There's another one where he personally helps rehabilitate the Ventriloquist by paying for his housing/amenities and setting him up with a well paying job straight out of prison. There's another one where Harley Quinn gets out of Arkham and Batman spends the whole episode compassionately trying to help her operate in the real world and stop self-sabotaging and getting arrested again. That's only a few episodes of the animated show. That's not counting other episodes, other shows, and of course an insane amount of examples from the comics. No disrespect to Donna here, but this seems like yet another instance of someone who only has a surface level understanding of the character and his source material, have this "groundbreaking revelation" that Batman hates poor people, even though he's been shown fighting the system at the top level and bottom level for decades at this point.

It was honestly sweet to see her giving an earnest shot at going straight but in the end she decided she just didn't fit in because she didn't understand or like all the rules. Anyway you're correct I remember batman was there trying to help her the whole episode

Not once have you mentioned the Penguin, who is a corrupt rich villain often depicted as an elite figure of Gotham.
Especially in The Batman (2022) where the Penguin runs a nightclub as a front for money laundering through legal loopholes.
Batman does not discriminate crime based on wealth, he doesn't go after the most elite to stop the corruption as Gotham is riddled with criminals that are constantly threatening public safety and are more likely to reek chaos in the city than a business person who may be cheating the system unless they are highering ruffians to attack the innocent.

She uses The Batman as example of Batman not targeting the rich and corrupt, when the entire plot of that movie is Batman actively trying to out corrupt politicians

    • @JC-uv3xd
      @JC-uv3xd Год назад

Yeah but Batman doesn't target the rich and corrupt in "The Batman." The Riddler does. Batman's goal is to stop the Riddler and he only finds out about the rich and corrupt criminals as a result of following the Riddler's clues. He tries to save the rich and corrupt criminal that the Riddler horrifically strapped to a bomb. He stops Catwoman from killing another rich and powerful criminal. This is highlighted by the fact that once he goes as Bruce Wayne to the rich and corrupt criminal club, he's immediately let in and treated as a welcome guest. When the Riddler says that he thought they were on the same side, Batman says he's insane.
I mean, the movie seems to be subtly critical of Batman as a person because of this. But Batman, himself, not targeting the rich and corrupt is very much the point of the movie. The character who is targeting the rich and corrupt is the crazy maniac villain. So I'd say that "the Batman" movie is actually one really good example of Batman as a character ignoring rich criminals and beating up poor criminals--even moreso than other movies and the comics.
The comics try to balance it out with mentions of him donating to charity, iirc. Because he's still supposed to be an aspirational person--good at heart and charming to people around him when he cares to be. But the Batman in the latest movie is written to be a broken down bastard shut in whose actions aren't necessarily right at any given moment, and who decides to change his ways at the end.

    • @ChildlikeMan
      @ChildlikeMan Год назад +7

@@JC-uv3xd you're definitely right in all of this, but his arc is that as he this, he shifts his focus to Falcone and Penguin and the like. He didn't start there, but he got to "I have to become more" by the end of the movie. Sure, his main target is still Riddler, but that's because he's a killer, and regardless of the corruption of those he kills, he's still killing. And by the end, Riddler floods Gotham, which was only ever going to hurt the poor and the average man. And it's because of all of this, along with the words of the mayor and of Selina, that Bruce realizes that he has to go higher than random thugs in the streets. On another note, the only people he punches in the entire movie who aren't rich criminals or working for rich criminals are the gang at the beginning and the riddler goons at the end. All of whom were either committing violent acts for the sake of it or perpetuating the violent plans of a madman. In the end, he learned, and he acted on what he learned. And there's not a doubt in my mind that the sequel will further that arc. Bruce Wayne, in comics, animation, and film, has always been a man who uses his wealth to benefit his city and others. Be it charity donations, public orphanages and hospitals, homeless shelters and housing, employment drives, donations to schools, or even just straight up rebuilding the city. And that's just a few examples. The point of Batman isn't to punish the poor. It's to highly the schism between the poor and the rich and to show what the more fortunate among us can do for those who have less than they do. It's also just cool to see Batman do his thing. I could go on and on even more than I already have on this, but I can't help but see this whole thing as surface-level analysis at best.

All of the movie is about how the system and the corruption of the city it's what completely deluting and fucking up the city... then at the end, the people who are actively saying that decide to murder a bunch of people and flood the whole city because reasons.
Generally speaking, these type of blockbusters do that with the heroe / villain dynamic. Cobblepot was an elitist of Gotham just like Wayne and even climbs his way back into the upper echelons of Gothams society a few times. Harvey Dent was a lawyer. Jonathan Crane was a psychologist. Victor Fries was a cryogenics expert and Dr.Langstrom was a scientist trying to cure deafness in humanity. And Batman started off by going after the Mob in Gotham. Carmine Falcone was one of the richest people in the city and Sionis was not poor by any means. Hugo Strange, also a pretty wealthy guy with the financial backing of the government. Ra's Al Ghul probably didn't care about money at all but he definitely has it since he has his own private jet. And Thomas Elliot was born into a wealthy family just like Wayne. His first crime was murdering his father and attempted murdering of his mother because he wanted his inheritance. I just don't believe Batman targets anyone based on their income.

Also worth pointing out, Batman’s allies, both in the batfamily and stuff like the justice league, come from both rich and poor backgrounds. Heck, you could argue Bruce has more of a soft spot for people who are poor, most of the robins and batgirls he’s trained came from either poor or middle class families, with the only one that might be in an iffy position is Barbara Gordon, and that’s just because it’s hard to assume her father isn’t at least getting a fair paycheck working for the police in Gotham.

I finished the video, and I'm already noticing some issues. Batman does target white collar crime and does go after corrupt politicians. The GCPD being corrupt and the politicians being in bed with the mob is pretty well known. It's why he admires Jim Gordon for trying to do the right thing. We see this in Batman Year One. It doesn't get as much play in the movies because the movies tend to be more action focused while white collar crime is more about investigations in finances. I know your intentions with the video was to use Batman as a gateway topic to talk about real people feeling disgusted with poor people and how we handle white collar crime, but I don't personally feel like this was the best jumping off point when it requires one to agree with a false point about the character.
I feel like the video could have done more to talk about this concept of a phobia of the poor and how classism works especially in terms with race and gender (there are debates over if rich black people are more or less privileged than poor white people for example). Overall, I give the video a C+ if I had to give it a grade. You got me to click on it by the title (I'm already a subscriber, so that's how I saw it), but it left me with not much to work with.

In the comics, Wayne Enterprises is the bedrock for the city and has numerous charities that support the poor.
    2. The corruption in the city is what Batman usually fights against. Gotham is literally rated as the worst crime capital of America because of the huge wealth disparity and corruption. Mobsters like the Penguin run the city who Batman fights against.
    3. This in between all the crazy murderous villains that he fights everyday.
Poison Ivy trying to genocide Gothamites
Scarecrow and Joker poisoning the water supply
Riddler planting bombs around the city
a pyromaniac firefly setting the city on fire
a cannibalous human crocodile hybrid in the sewers
    multiple serial killers
joke villains that run around causing mayhem
an illuminati-lite organization that has been corrupting the city since its founding
an insane asylum that is pretty much an open door given the number of outbreaks.
There really isn't much time to fight muggers between all this.
Honestly the city is a hellhole. (No literally in one iteration there is a giant demon underneath Gotham that's causing this madness). The situation in Gotham can never improve or only temporarily improve because its comics. The plot needs to continue and there must always be trouble.
Gotham is a cesspool of criminality, corruption, and desperation and Batman is one of the few people who would never give up on the city. I think this is the essence of her point. He is trying to make it better, but he’s so biased from both trauma and his classism that he truly believes fighting petty criminals in the street is worth all the time and effort and cutting edge technology he uses to do it. Maybe all of that energy and all of those resources aren’t best used for seeking out low level criminals, ceaselessly supplied by the decline of a city mired in inequality, and expending great effort to engage each of them in hand to hand combat. It seems like, if I’m correct, Donna is saying he’s in a unique position to be pointing all that energy, effort and sheer power at something a little less… obvious. Maybe matching the major force he has behind him with something of equal or similar magnitude, something the cops and the people can’t fight themselves, something they’d actually need his unique skillset to challenge. What stands out to me the most is how advanced his tech is. It’s not unlike how the FBI accessed a stingray to catch a guy filing 30k in false tax returns yet we ain’t got Jack or shit on the billions in rampant financial crimes and antitrust practices happening on Wall Street and in board rooms. 2008 happened and the people behind it are YET AGAIN at the helm of our global economy, screwing around with ppls lives. How the IRS says it’s easier to get wage garnishments or tax liens approved for back taxes if they audit and pursue default judgements against a lower middle class or working class person, bc they are more successful in generating revenue from the people who can’t afford to fight it. So, there are criminals committing major tax crimes stealing way more than the average Joe miscalculates, but since Joe can’t afford to be protected, he’s an easier target for an attack than those who intentionally defraud the government for millions of ill gotten gains every year.
I digress but yoooou get it eat the rich etc etc

As good as they are and the fact that they single handedly brought Batman back into the public consciousness and paved the way for the recent superhero movie era, the Nolan batman movies aren't the best to base a critique of the character. Haven't seen The Batman but I doubt it is either. There's just too much short hand and condensing that takes place even in a 2+ hour movie for a 70+ year old character.
One thing to remember is that Batman may stop criminals but he ultimately leaves the penalties and punishment up to the civil government, even if it is ineffective or corrupt. It's the line he won't cross to become judge jury and executioner.

I think the best versions of Batman are the ones where he does exactly what you describe he doesn't do: go after corruption in the city and attempt to use his Bruce Wayne identity to help. Batman's been around for 80-ish years, and I can't even imagine how many different writers have told Batman stories, so how he uses his wealth and power has shifted so much over time. I think the Telltale Batman video game series does a really nice job of having his beloved parents turn out to be rich assholes who accumulated wealth, and now Bruce has to deal with that legacy

These are now retconned for a reason so it’s not very fair to use that to judge Batman media as a whole . The man who’d end up adopting two orphans one of which (Jason Todd) was even raised in the slums to drug addicted parents is not the same man who’d kill criminals without a second thought . Not to mention his friend Leslie Thompkins that runs a free clinic for criminals and drug addicts funded by Bruce himself

Sticking strictly to the Batman we must consider three things: his trauma, his status, and experience as the Batman. His trauma did shape his vew on the petty criminals into them being his primary targets. Because of this trauma he most likely developed tunnel vision while becoming a figure of fear to combat crime. As far as he knew he had to take out every petty criminal who was actually caring out the acts they were ordered ot compelled to do. His status as a rich kid blinded him to why the criminals he fights commit crimes in the first place.
When he began investigating the Riddler killings only then did he realize that he had to go higher than the thugs he fights. He began working up the ladder to take out the bigger fish who are part of the elite. Along side this revelation working with Silena Kyle showed him that she was one of the criminals he would hunt and realized that a lot of those criminals are doing what they're doing just to survive or correct an injustice they experienced.
And then with him being Batman for just a couple years he carried out his nightly patrols not realizing that in the background his actions inspired others to act out in vengeance like he did but on a much more lethal scale. It took him seeing the monster he created to realize he had to be better. He couldn't be "vengeance" if he wanted to fix things. This makes me believe that in the next movie he will use his status as a billionaire and socialite to help the poor and politically combat the elites he can't take on directly as Batman. Whether by using his company to undo the damage that corrupted the system or simply giving to the poor through charity or improving the city itself.
So do I think he hates poor people? No. But he definitely overlooked them. He should've looked to protect rather than to simply fight.

The entire motivation Batman had in his first few years was to go after the corrupt elite, there’s a great moment in year one where he enters carmine falcones home, and tells every rich elite criminal in there that “from this moment on, none of you are safe” there’s a REASON why he teamed up with Gordon and Dent, it was to take on the mob.
He also has been seen to carry 100s in his belt to give to the poor, he’s also given criminals jobs at Wayne Ent, and he’s been known to donate money to mental health hospitals, he’s been known to offer help to even the worst of his villains, Bruce Wayne knows damn well the root of crime and evil in his city, it’s just not a simple thing to fight.
There’s an ENTIRE story about Batman vs the elite, that being the court of owls, a secret organization of rich criminals in Gotham who run everything.

While I agree with the sentiment of this video. I feel like it omits a lot in order to use batman as a vessel to explore corruption in a capitalist society. Yes, some Batman comics depict a deeply damaged person beating up muggers to fulfill some sort of lust for revenge. However, there are so many stories interrogating this and showing Bruce realizing he isn’t going to affect change in a meaningful way by targeting symptoms of a greater sickness. The Batman is literally about him fighting crime-lords and corrupt politicians exploiting a philanthropic program set up by the Waynes. If that’s not white collar, I don’t know what is. I don’t think anyone should have as much money as Bruce Wayne, but so many writers have addressed this. They try to depict him using his privilege to help others through philanthropy and other methods. Is he a false ideal of a rich person, yes, but he is often portrayed as someone using his inherited wealth to protect as many people as possible.

I agree with this video but... I would like to point out that Batman is far more complex than a man who beats up poor people. This is more of a surface level description of him.
He is not just Batman, he is also Bruce Wayne, who is the billionaire in charge of Wayne Enterprises. Most of the younger superheroes are financed by Wayne Enterprises. He pays for everything and finances systems and schemes put into place to help Gotham City.
Batman is insane... as in actually insane for choosing to be Batman. This is not something normal people do because of how incredibly unhealthy and toxic it is to be Batman. You need an awful mental state to be Batman. This is why he takes on orphaned kids to be his Robin. It is so they do not turn out to be like him. The first Robin had his parents murdered just like Bruce Wayne, so he was adopted as a son so Bruce can provide him with a support network, which leads Robin to quit being Robin because he moves on and he also realises just how awfully toxic it is to be Batman, so he became Nightwing to step away from the murky Batman life. Nightwing fights the criminals the police cannot get to and he is way less harsh than Batman.
Batman usually is beating up henchmen who get in the way of stopping Batman or the Gotham Police Department from stopping a much larger crime from happening. Other criminals he also hurts are those creating victims to crimes that Batman is able to stop when the Gotham P.D. is too busy. The existence of Batman scares everyone to think twice before committing a crime or organising a crime ring because Batman will take them down.
Gotham City has an unnatural amount of crime, more than our real world, the police are either too scared to handle these crimes or they have their hands full. Batman is there to fill in for the police while at the same time sending a message of fear to everyone else not doing crime so they are less tempted to do bad stuff. Tbh, fear is only temporary so fear eventually fails for the desperate poor people. Batman bruises but he doesn't kill. He makes innocent people feel safer in an awful city.
Batman is *not* needed in our real world but he is absolutely needed in Gotham City and for his planet (for when he joins the Justice League to protect earth from threats that are Avengers Level Threats).
Solid video. I liked. I'm sorry if I came off as a "well ackushally 🤓".

I think this is kind of an issue pf different versions of the character--some versions of Batman will have him take down the rich, or give to the poor, etc. But others want him to be an edgy badass who is all grit and violence and no compassion.
Now, I have to say--I don't think it actually matters one way or another. The overall framing of the situation--billionaire goes around and beats up muggers and people who escaped from a mental asylum--is one that is going to overshadow any action an individual Batman interpretation tries to do against the rich or for the poor. Especially if you're talking about how the broad strokes get interpreted by mainstream culture outside of the context of the comics.
One comic book might write Batman taking down the rich and helping the poor. But if you take out those actions and write version of him who only beats up the poor, he's still recognizable as Batman to general audiences.
The charity is not essential for Batman to be Batman. The beating up muggers on the street stuff is.

  • @JimmySlaughter
    @JimmySlaughter Год назад +8

This is definitely a hot take, and I disagree with the premise. Batman is a fictional story that has to have progressive arcs. He always starts off fighting Gotham's criminal underbelly, the burglars, muggers, rapists, gangs, etc., because those are all types of thugs that the audience knows roam the streets at night. Then, Batman finds a clue, that leads to another crime, that leads to another clue, that eventually puts him in the Batcave, on the Batcomputer, searching through bank records, offshore accounts, and private island flight records, until the "Greatest Detective" uncovers a sinister plot, orchestrated by some mob boss, a politician, an evil corporate CEO, or a supervillain.
And then there's Bruce Wayne, the careful philanthropist. He's always donating money and getting involved with charities. He tries to do good with his excess wealth, because some things he can do, as Bruce Wayne, will go a long way to help prevent creating problems that he, as Batman, will eventually have to deal with. It always reads as Bruce Wayne wants to eventually have a city that is thriving, prosperous, and safe enough that it won't need a Batman to protect it anymore.
It is all just really good storytelling, and maybe we're overanalyzing it. I dunno. My childhood Batman (Kevin Conroy) died recently, so I might be a little emotional on the subject.

A running motif in the Batman series is the fact most of the characters are suffering from mental issues. Clayface has been shown with DID. Mr. Freeze and Poison Ivy grow a sense of misanthropy. Calendar Man, Zsasz, and the Riddler have obsessive tendencies. Even the Joke, depending on which version, is created by trauma (and maybe some chemicals). Even accredited psychologists like Strange, Crane, and Harley, who should understand their own issues better, fall victim. Bruce, however, has money, and thus is able to both exercise his trauma and use it to motivate himself to travel the world, learning beneficial techniques to combat his trauma, like meditation, martial arts, and observation. In essence, what is a disability for others is a strength to Bruce solely because he's rich enough to turn it into such.

You always make good videos and have interesting talking points, your interpretation of Batman as a reflection of classism is insightful.
I partially feel the reason Batman goes after petty criminals is because petty crime offers up events for content of a comic. He's a crime fighter so story writers will have him fight petty criminals as a device.
You can also say that different interpretations of batman will better fit that concept than others. Like Frank Miller's depiction of batman would probably fit what you're saying to a T.

And even still, Bruce Wayne could do more of a structural change than Batman's chip damage, by lobbying for just laws for the people, using the same power, money, and influence, that corporations use everyday to benefit themselves (charity is just a patch, it can never be and end on itself, just like social welfare). If by his adult age he hasn't learned this, he's sort of a man child. One than can beat you to an inch of your life, but a man child nontheless. Actually, what a great arc would be of Bruce coming to terms with this. Batman doesn't get killed, he just ceases to exist.

It’s true he doesn’t tackle the bigger menace(massive powerful politicians with very shady connections). These politicians cause constant problems for Gotham and Batman rarely takes down these guys(only takes down the kooks in costumes). 2. He keeps on saving his super villains(joker for example). Now I’m not saying he has to snap every single criminals neck but dude if the villain is about to fall, LET HIM FALL! Or at least give enough evidence to the police department(so that way villains like two-face can get the death penalty). Batman’s ridiculous code has gotten a lot of civilians killed and his own family nearly killed(or permanently scarred).

Clickbait title. Kinda says it all, to say nothing of the lack of legwork done actually researching stuff to back up said clickbait title.

Poverty is correlated with crime but its not causal. In fact its likely crime causes poverty but not the other way around. The criminals batman beats up are a very very small percentage of repeat offenders who do the vast majority of the crime. He's doing everyone a service by taking out of commission those who wreak havoc on the poor communities.

I can't agree with the "system raises us this way" because most people have parents who teach...or should teach kindness. Often movies, books and other media teach us that.
You forget the "nurturing" part of a human.
Why are there social programs and people both in an office and on the streets trying to combat the problem?
I do, however, agree that, even according to the Internet statistics - most people IN THE USA care and follow celebrity gossip. On the other hand that is not the case for every other country.
You should know that culture is a variable which affects the results!!

I'm a Batman hater and this is categorically untrue. I guess I get what you were trying to do but Batman is probably not the best vehicle to talk about this.

I disagree, batman is often seen going against the rich and elite of gotham, when shown going after thieves and smaller criminals most of them are usually a part of a gang which is operated directly by super villains such as joker and penguin. It's also noted several times that in gotham thieves and small time crooks are also murderers which links to batmans origin story as his parents too were killed by a small time crook. Also the main reason he is shown fighting smaller crooks during the start or end of comic books and movies is because targeting larger organizations and super villains takes time, even during long arcs of investigation he is seen protecting the streets of gotham while alfred does some research.

Good vid but imma disagree he rebuilt Gotham after No Man’s Land and entire City blocks. Gotham has buildings fitted for Kaiju defense which they needed. The Wayne foundation literally props up Gotham. There’s comics of him literally handing out money to poor people. The Wayne foundation hires petty criminals to help rehabilitate them. He took down the mob and has two deal with 2 secret societies, Court of Owls and League of Assassins. Less Twitter more comics, not accurate or encompassing anything actually occurs. Since he lost his wealth in Rebirth, Gotham got significantly worse. Gotham is a failed city with a significant gap in classes and Bruce is the only billionaire helping them both as himself and Batman

Well the video makes sense if batman would exist in real life. But batman was concepted as a superhero thaz physically fightes crime. While some newer batman stories adress this issue that the root of crime is often found at the people who have money and power, at the core batman stories follow the crime fighter formular. Just because it is a much more entertaining to see a superhero beat up a supervillain then him, then them searching for proof of tax evasion at a generic rich guy.

  • @Lifelight_
    @Lifelight_ Год назад

I disagree with the Batman portion of the video since Batman does fight Gotham's elite and wealthy and helps the city in other ways besides fighting criminals, but there's no denying that he's still the same dude who leads children into a life of never-ending war against crime instead of helping them get a life away from crime.
Double standards will always exist, but we do have the choice not to take part into them. It's disgusting that we make movies or Netflix shows about the criminals we found entertaining or even that we agree with but find those who commit crime for need rather than personal gain or mental illness _beneath us_ and unnaceptable.
