The 355 Challenge was the first Ferrari I ever rode in. When I was a kid my mom competed in SCCA Solo and we were at a autocross at Hutchinson island raceway and a guy brought his 355 challenge out. He offered to take me for a ride around the track in it. Still one of the greatest experiences of my life.
When it comes to European style V8s yes I agree. Some American V8 sound amazing too, but a European flat plane V8 and an American Cross-Plane V8 isn't really an apples to apples comparison.
Had an opportunity to look at one close up in the late 90s at a circuit. It had the old red and white Marlboro livery and I heard it was just purchased by a fellow touring car racer at that time. What a thing of beauty!
The downshifting the driver is performing in this video is extremely difficult and he makes it look easy by executing it with an almost fluid-like motion; by applying gentle pressure to the accelerator as he shifts into a lower gear all while depressing the brake with the same foot. The correct driver in this car makes for a symphony of sounds whether he is slowing down for corner or accelerating out of one.
Hi. Sorry for my very late answer. The F355 Challenge is a very "natural" car compared to modern ones: no electronic aids, manual gearbox, medium grip. She slides on demand and is very easy to drive. And the noise ... I go to Spa and each time some modern GT's owners come to me to discuss about my car. Mostly F448 Italia or F488 owners because they see me on the track, playing with the car, while thier car is not moving at all. Ok the modern car are faster, but this F355 is a tremendous pleasure.

289 in the Cobra Coupe is the best sounding crossplane, but yes this is an eargasm!
