17:40 Btw, the LNs...go hard. Sure, the anime nailed the landing so good, I thought that WAS the end of the source material!! However, "next volume" Euphy and Anis have ACTUALLY changed!!! They are new people, with a new life together, where the politics and religious culture HAD to change!!! I mean, sure, a season 2 would likely make me weep with joy(necause the story is that fucking awesome), but I will be pushing the novels for the rest of my yuri-obsessed days.

Back from seeing your video a few days ago. Just finished binging this anime yesterday. Really enjoyed the show and like you said, loved the closure given to our core cast. The Climatic Scene between Anis and Euphy was amazing (and in retrospect, wish I didn't know it was coming but nonetheless). Thank you again for the vid and recommendation of such a fun and enjoyable show. Here's hoping for more great shows with and without yuri this year.

Speaking of there being more story, the first LN chapter after the anime left off (vol4). Omg, anis is such a bottom and is so gay for euphy.
Go read it, the free preview probably cover most if not all of that chapter.
I was actually quite dissatisfied by the ending, honestly. I didn't like how the final conflict resolved at all. it felt like backsliding onto a narrative message that it hadn't been leading up to. euphie accepting the spirit covenant was treated as a sacrifice from the start, and the responsibility of it was likened to a curse by multiple characters. choosing to become a spirit would end up with her slowly losing her humanity as the years stretched on, memories fading and feelings becoming more and more alien as she leaves her friends and family behind, and the gravity of it was emphasized. this isn't an assumption I'm making, this is how the text itself treats it.
so the stage is set as "anis doesn't want to be queen, but feels like she HAS to be; she has to sacrifice her own happiness, her own freedom, for the sake of the people she cares about" and "euphie doesn't want to accept the spirit covenant, but feels like she HAS to; she has to sacrifice her own humanity, her own freedom, for the sake of the people(person, largely) she cares about". that's a narrative duality that builds itself up to a breaking of that duality, to finding a third solution that doesn't involve either girl sacrificing themselves for the other, at least in a story that isn't supposed to be a tragedy.
so when the conclusion DOES end with euphie sacrificing herself for anis in a sense, it leaves the entire story feeling hollow. the whole show, "freedom" has been one of the primary themes driving the characters forward. the yearning for freedom, the embracing of freedom, and the constraints and responsibilities that shackle that freedom have been primary conflicts for all its characters, even outside of anis and euphie. al's hatred for a world that cannot let his sister, cannot let those it deems "lesser" whether because of heritage or social status or magical ability, be free is one of the primary reasons he does everything he does. lainie's struggles with what it means for people to care about her when she's essentially unconsciously mind controlling them, and whether anyone she has ever interacted with has actually been genuine and free, is the main source of her emotional turmoil.
so it feels like the conclusion it reaches, where euphie bears the curse of becoming a spirit and traps herself in a role that has been built up to be a tragic one, where euphie relinquishes some parts of her ability to live freely so that anis is no longer shackled... that's a conclusion I'm not sure I can accept, given the themes and narrative structure the story has spent the entire 12 episodes building up. I was happy with the romance and the kiss and the emotional heart-to-heart about anis' memories of her past life and the insecurities and fragile self-worth that has brought with them, but when the resolution of the final conflict feels dissonant with the rest of the story it's hard for that happiness to actually stick, y'know?
unless I'm misunderstanding some part of the whole thing, that's the conclusion I came to. if I've missed something big or misunderstood the narrative themes in the story, then I'd love to hear someone else's thoughts.

I enjoyed anime, but ending was kind of disappointing: they just pushed the yuri to the breaking point for me, it just got annoying, especially the very last scene, it has no purpose, just gay girls flying in rainbows
Really? I actually liked the very last scene, it felt like the deserved peace after all the depression they went through
I wanna watch this but I haven't watched the show yet
