I've been using salt to quarantine fish for almost 15 years and can say, I've never had ick or any kind of parasite issues. And when I had saltwater, I do the opposite and lower salt content.
Also going back to what Cory said about getting parasites after treating with salt, I think it could be because their is different parasites that thrive in higher salinity. So one of my mentors said to reduce the Salinity to kill off the new parasites.

A straight forward question: Is regular salt, bought in a grocery store, without added iodine. Is this the baseline salt for use as described in this video?
Non-iodized salt, especially sea salt, should work. However, coarse Kosher salt or rock salt would be better. I always use Kosher salt, because I use it in my barbecue stuff and have a lot on hand.
I'm using regular salt from a grocery store, fine-grained regular NaCl salt one can put in a salt shaker. That and rising temperature to 30 ˚C / 86 F in case of mild Ich outbreak.

In both cases a temperature needs to be raised to 30 °C / 86 F, which is way above what most fish and plants are comfortable with. Cysts don't like it either and also their lifecycle is faster.
Cory, could you, please, indicate salt dosage in weight per volume? Otherwise in video you address how important it is to take into consideration salt crystal size, but don't give a solution to the problem. Personally, when dosing salt, I found it very difficult to find reliable information on how to convert tbs per volume to weight per volume and I would imagine that others have struggled with it too. I couldn't simply dose with tablespoons as in Finland I don't have access to fine aquarium salt.
No way to know for certain since dried salt still got some amount of water in it, but assume your salt is 80 90% NaCl, put 3 grams in 100ml water to get roughly 2.5% solution like fritz package said. Or buy salinity meter or sth more accurate
You can just use normal rock salt from the grocery store just make sure it is not the iodized salt. 1 table spoon is 15 or 16g i am not so sure but you can look it up online.
@@FatherFH I haven't found pure fine salt in our grocery stores. Its always with anticaking agent and iodine or other added minerals. I did search online how many grams is one tbs of salt and I got widely different results.
I'm sure it would vary slightly depending on the specific measuring spoon, but I have the exact salt he was using in the video, and a tablespoon of it weighed 17 grams.
@@purpleworm4725 interesting. Usually rock salt is pure and in bigger crystals. You can try the health food store or where you buy multivitamins. Maybe even the pool section. If you really want you can buy saltwater aquarium salt, it is much more expensive but it will last you forever It is not really an exact science so if the fish should be fine. It is not a dangerous chemical like the medication so if you go a little over it wont kill stuff right away.
Great video but like you said at the start measuring volume (table spoons etc) doesn't make a lot of sense. Since we don't all have your brand of salt, can you also include weight per volume (eg grams per liter, or even grams per gallon?)?
Ok here's the thing. I just convert my salt water tank to fresh water. Basically I already do twice water change and still got around 1.003-1.005 ppt salinity. Is it save if I put in my fresh water fish?

currently dealing with what we think is epistylis (hard to tell if ich) and at least 1ppm nitrite readings. Currently doing at least 50% water change daily and adding Prime and Stability as labeled. We have moved our fish to a hospital tank and added API super ich cure and also added some salt (1 tbsp per 3 gal), reduced the heat (didnt want to let the epistylis thrive in warmer water) but I also understand that it will slow the ich life cycle down (if it is ich). While we are new to this hobby, we are doing our best to research and are open to suggestions. There's just a lot of information out there and some of it is conflicting. We want our fish to thrive and I want to reduce their stress and pain as much as possible but also want to keep them alive. Thanks!
My orandas recently started spitting out white secretions with tiny light brown seed things in them. I've looked all over and couldn't find out what's wrong. Have you ever seen that before?
Can i remove fish poop that are laying on my bare bottom tank while i am salt treating my fish by using some airline hose...so that the amount of water lost is minimal. Should i dose back the lost salt in the removed water or something? Anybody?
It must have been recorded quite a while ago. I’m now in the process of starting my first aquarium and I’ve been thinking how to go about quarantining the fish. Thanks for this video, now I’ll go with the salt in the quarantine tank, as a lot of the substances you use and recommend for quarantine are not available without prescription in Europe.
Question, how much salt is too much for live plants? I remember using a "Nitrite Absorbing" pad in my filter before and it worked but all my plants started dying so I took it out and had to research more. Once I did that I figured out it was basically just a filter soaked in salt water.

Pro tip - Always mix meds in a jug of tank water before you add it to the tank. It dissolves salt and stops dosing mistakes affecting the system.
I stick it in HOB filter before the filter media

If you really want you can buy saltwater aquarium salt, it is much more expensive but it will last you forever
It is not really an exact science so if the fish should be fine.
Google to convert ⚖⚖
Ok here's the thing. I just convert my salt water tank to fresh water. Basically I already do twice water change and still got around 1.003-1.005 ppt salinity. Is it save if I put in my fresh water fish?
Can you tell me is it one table spoon per 3 gallon for Celtic salt please ?
Its just salt. Or use Kosher
Ok so what if someone has scaleless fish and live plants. How much salt per gallon?
Very good information.
Please tell me if it will work on colemnaris?
It can yes, maracyn/ich x combo also works on columnaris.
can ANY plants handle salt? i have fungus in my tank and want to add salt. i have wysteria, amazon swords , anubias nana, and christmas and java moss. help!
Hi Corey. Wondering if you’ll be at Aquashella in Orlando this year? Have been looking to see when it is and haven’t found any information 😟
Is salt good for a baby Cory catfish
When should you use salt ?
Could I use salt as a quarantine medecine?
currently dealing with what we think is epistylis (hard to tell if ich) and at least 1ppm nitrite readings. Thanks!
So do you keep adding salt everyday? Or just once?
What about diatomaceous earth for planted tanks with lots of fish?
My orandas recently started spitting out white secretions with tiny light brown seed things in them. I've looked all over and couldn't find out what's wrong. Have you ever seen that before?
Informative 👍
Can Aquarium Coop make some salt that isn't $5/lbs? What does Fritz put in theirs to justify that price?
can you make a video about brakish fish and shrimp?
Can I use non iodine salt that I bought from the grocery store. It's pure salt no chemicals added. Straight Outta Japan Hokkaido.
I put a bit of Himalayan pink salt in today. It’s what we had in the kitchen.🤷🏻♂️
Did this work? I have the same
@Aquarium Co-op will using salt in my quarantine tank harm the beneficial bacterial?
@Ricardo thank you
1/2 tsp per gallon.... or 1 tablespoon per gallon for livebearers?! Why the big difference in dosage?
That same salt is very expensive in Costa Rica haha, it is not cheap, we use Cow Salt haha
What salt do I use for my bichir she has blotted belly
@@jodykelley1584 epsom salt bath for few minutes
What I would like to know I what salt is recommended rock salt ,seas salt or ionized salt which am I using
Iss it IONIZED or Iodine?? Not Iodine.. that's for humans.
Question, how much salt is too much for live plants? I remember using a "Nitrite Absorbing" pad in my filter before and it worked but all my plants started dying so I took it out and had to research more. Once I did that I figured out it was basically just a filter soaked in salt water.
Oh my gosh. I did the same thing and couldn’t figure out why my plants suffered… thank you.
Do I need to add salt during every waterchange?
No. Unless you want to.
Some of my fish died from epistylis and some didn't. I have about 4 fish left now. How do i know when it's gone and when can I add more fish again?
Side note: my corys are sensitive to salt so I can't do that. Not I'm pretty sure the issue has resolved
is 500PPM too much for a freshwater tank?
Has anyone tried Pink Himalayan salt?
