After the recommendation of a VERY knowledgeable friend and Discus breeder in London, I've added normal table sea salt to my tank to treat a little ich that was present on my tank boss for some time. Fish already looks much better in 2 days. And I think, my already colorful cichlids even have more intense colors now. The table salt I used is pure with trace elements of anti caking agent (Silicon Dioxide and sodium ferrocyanide) that is nowhere near any amount harmful to fish. Normal pure table salt, even with iodine and anti caking agents is fine to use as treatment or in lower amounts, as a preventative. I don't think paying more money is worth it. My friend gives lectures in Universities on fish and is a reputable discus breeder in London. He has successfully used table salt as treatment for decades. Thank you for the very informational video on the different types of salt and their uses.
I agree the iodine amounts are so insignificant that it isnt harmful at all. My issue with the table salt is the caking agents. I just dont feel comfortable with using it. But if its working well for you, I'm glad to hear it! 💪

Instant Ocean Sea salt is the best, IMO. I’ve been using it for years. I dissolve it in hot water, then pour it in at water changes. I haven’t had any type of parasitic, bacterial, fin or any other type of breakouts in my tanks since I started using it years ago. The Rift lakes are literally diluted sea water anyway. IDK, just my 2 cents! Blessings.

Kev, Wonderful video on aquarium slats and the different ones available. I have heard of epsom baths for fish if they have Bloat and stuff. In my CA/SA tank I dose salt also but not a lot just enough to put some in the water. In my 55 gal and 20 long planted tanks I can’t really use a lot of salt. I use half the dose if I do dose aquarium salt. Because as you know some plants are sensitive to salt in the water. Appreciate the videos brother. Do we have any new tanks coming in? Are you going to dabble into saltwater? Hehe😂❤
I have a roughly 5 or 7 inch comet goldfish with dropsy in a 10k+ gallon pond. None of the other 40 or so fish in there have any problems but this one has dropsy. It has bloated slowly over several months, i originally thought it was eggs until the scales started to pinecone. I do not believe the problem is anything other than bad genetics because it's a comet based on none of the other fish being affected for several months. But I want to relieve the bloating with salt. Once I remove him from the pond and put him in a quarantine tank what kind and how much salt should I use to suck the water out that is swelling him?
Thanks Kev for explaining the different types of salt. Can you measure the amount of salinity in your tank with a refractometer? Or does it only work with certain salt types...i.e. salt water tanks.

So I have had my peacock and hap tank set up for for almost 6 months, would it be ok to start with cichlid lake salt now? Or would it shock the fish because I have never used it? And if I do use it how do you keep the water in balance, if I do what I think is a 50% water change and let's say it's 45% and I add 50% of cichlid salt for my water volume, the salt content would slowly rise if that makes sense, would it be ok to skip a salt does ever now and again or would that bother the fish because it isn't consistent? And does cichlid lake salt help with health of the fish?
I use 2 Tablespoons of Natural Sea Salt(Non Iodized), 1 Tablespoon of Epson Salt and 1 Teaspoon of baking soda per 10 Gallons on my 55 Gallon Mbuna tank as a buffer for about 2 months now. I only doze my tank up to 40 gallons I won't go over. They seem to be thriving and started breeding 3 days after I started using it. I do 50 percent water changes weekly so I only dose for 20 gallons every water change. Should I switch to cichlid salt?
If you’re sure you found the sweet spot you can continue dosing baking soda without a problem if you prefer that. The cichlid salt won’t raise KH or PH, it raises your GH (hardness) they would benefit from the cichlid salt.
Awesome video. My question is if I dose with cichlid salt on a regular basis, can I also dose aquarium salt at the same time for health? I have some flashing going on and it is not ich. Meds have not stopped it. Thought aquarium salt might help. It's not bad, but I can't figure it out.
Occasional flashing is ok. They might have irritation to changes in temp or PH which occur naturally. If its excessive flashing then you could have a problem. Dosing cichlid salt for them regularly is great, if you wanted to also dose Aquarium salt do it sparingly 1-2 months apart. Thats how I use both. 😁
Check water for ammonia and nitrites. Also when dosing cichlid lake salt, get an API GH and kh test kit to check and make your other parameters are up to spec

If you meant Africans and Tiger Oscars, those fish require different water parameters. So one of them wont be in their natural water. I assume you have alot more Africans so use the Cichlid lake salt for them,
I keep a saltwater and freshwater tank side by side and every week when I do 80% water change on the freshwater cichlids I add 5 gallons of saltwater from my water change.
Big bro kave love your expertise and how to break it down for the people! How many teaspoons or tablespoons of aquarium fresh water salt should I use in my 55 gallon tank
I tried your app, am I able to log when I do a water change or a canister clean, I don't see anywhere to log this into. Also can I change the date format and switch to metric (liters not gallons), or is this app only intended for Americans?
The units of measure are being updated and tested right now, app update coming very soon. And yes you will be able to log and keep track of all maintenance done. 😁💪 It’s a young app getting better everyday through user feedback and regular updates. 😁
@KaveManAquatics So I called Seachem tech support. Apparently when doing a water change you have to add Malawi ph buffer at the very end. I was adding it with the Cichlid lake salt and ph was staying at 7. Now I wait a 1/2 hour after water changing.Add the buffer and boom ph at 8.2 perfect.
@@KaveManAquatics I've used it for treatment baths & added some to the tank but not a lot as I have Kuhli Loaches in the tank too. Also used Epsom salt baths but not had a lot of luck with them. Epsom salts are good for plants too so I've added some in the tank from time to time, again not often. Great video btw 😁
@@KaveManAquatics I'm doing a 75 gal with Fx6, lots of rock work (texas holey rocks for ph buffering) and was considering doing an mbuna tank with males and females and then adding a few male peacocks and haps. Do you think it could work? Was considering 1 male, 3 female colonies of yellow labs, yellow tail acei, clown lab, and rusty (16 mbuna total) and maybe 5-7 male haps /peacocks. Thoughts?

No, I havent ever used a protein skimmer. But my new saltwater tank is coming soon, so I'm sure I will! 😁
Big bro kave love your expertise and how to break it down for the people! How many teaspoons or tablespoons of aquarium fresh water salt should I use in my 55 gallon tank
1 tablespoon per 5 gallons
@@KaveManAquatics thanks big bro respect ✌️
So, for live plants, no salt or some salt allowed? I have anubias, java fern, red root floaters, etc for Betta
I wouldn’t use any salt with live plants.

2:35 lol I just tried to like your video twice😂 they need to add double like button
LOL, Great suggestion!! 🤣💪
Can I add salts and Prime at the same time of water change?
Yes Sir! 😁
Finally I got the answer 🥰🥰
Glad I could help!! 😁💪
Which one do I use for my saltwater tank?
None of these are the Salt you need for a saltwater tank.
I just youse salt for kill snails when i get 20 new plants. Alot of salt and 4-5 days fix it
My man Kev droppin these knowledge bombs! Ahhh snap, now I want steak n eggs 😅😅😅
🤣🤣🤣 The best!!! 💪💪
I put cichlid salt in my planted tanks
Can i get a quick list of fish in that discus tank.
Discus, Arowana, Geophagus 😁
Kev when i add Seachem cichlid salt my PH takes a nosedive
Not possible. Adding minerals wont drop your PH. Something else is causing it.
Sea salt for Guppies?
I’ve only ever used the basic aquarium salt as an immune boost for my fish.
That'll get the job done! 😁💪
Your FUSCO is Hi Jacking your video. Lol
The video and the tank itself! He’s been a naughty boss lately! lol
K Man ! What no Kosher salt ? 😂😂 Hope you have been well my brother...
🤣🤣🤣
guys, i have a question. what will happen if you didn't watee change after you use methylene blue?
The meds will stay in the tank
@@KaveManAquatics it's safe right?, like there's no going to happen bad. thankyou so much for responding!
Who's messing with the likes
What do you mean?
I thought you were going to use this video to transition into your new salt water tank, update!
lol, That would have been a great segue...but I'm still a few weeks out from the start of that project! Stay tuned though 😁
You spent half the time explaining the difference between regular salt and epson salt.
You’re welcome
I've got Guppy Salt? lol
You can but start with a low dosage and work your way up from there if you don’t see any signs of stress.
Epson salts can be used for humans who can’t poop either! 😂
🤣🤣
In your African cichlid tank are they all male?
Yes, All male except for 2 frontosa females. The Malawi's wont mate with them so theres no aggression issues.
Thoughts?
How long should I use paraguard to treat ich? And should I be doing daily water changes when using or one big water change when I finish treat with paraguard?
