36mm and even 34mm look amazing and are classy sizes. People are basically putting wall clocks on their wrists these days. Small watches will always be truly classic. Big watches have their place if it fits the wrist without overhang.
I have to say that the 36mm has, by far, the better design and overall proportions for sure, but it looks a bit too small on my wrist. If I had a smaller wrist, I'd definitely pick the 36mm with white gold fluted bezel and jubilee bracelet! I agree with some of the previous comments, a 38mm DateJust would be perfect (if it were to have the same proportions of the 36mm). And even though the 41mm is a better size for my wrist (although a bit too large), the proportions of the watch are quite off (and not just a bit) so, absent that aforementioned 38mm, I'd rather pick up a 2020 Oyster Perpetual (no date) in 41mm with a dark dial (so it would look a bit smaller), or a 39mm Explorer; they both have a much more refined look, better proportions, and having an all-satin oyster bracelet, they are more understated and stylish (would miss the date function though).
41mm for me! I just purchased a brand new Datejust 41 with the white gold fluted bezel, white dial with Roman numerals, and a jubilee bracelet from my home town authorized dealer. I love the watch and it is absolutely the dressiest watch I own, even though I also have a gorgeous Omega DeVille co-axial with a black face on a black alligator bracelet.
@@darrellwood79 Hey man, I’m 65 and have been looking in the store window since I was graduated from high school. It took me a very long time, to be able to buy one. Keep the grind mode and it will be yours, I promise you. I did the same!
36mm hands down! Its just so much classier. I have to disagree with the idea that the 41mm fits a wider range of wrist sizes. 36mm is the original and classic. An average wrist can "pull of" both 36mm add 41mm. The difference is that the smaller 36mm will still look classy on a larger wrist whereas a 41mm will look clunky and kinda goofy unless you have a large wrist. Also the the fluted bezel looks so much better in the 36mm, it looses its elegance when scaled up imo
That’s so true .. the fluted bezel becomes too large and too shiny on the 41 where as on the 36 it looks like a minor addition but doesn’t overtake the look
Here is a little known fact about modern DateJusts...the DJ 36 dial actually measures closer to 37mm, and the DJ 41 actually measures closer to 40. There is a great video on YT where someone goes into the detailed measurements. Most people really only notice the difference outright when compared side by side. The fact that people pay so much more premium for the DJ41 is insane. Also, I keep hearing watch tubers state some like "the DJ36 is more of a woman's watch now" - no it isn't, they are just trying to upsell you to a 41mm. The only women I know who wear Rolex women's DJ's still wear the smaller ladies models...in two-tone.
I like that you discussed which size is better for different wrist circumferences. I have a 16 cm wrist and I just have to have a Datejust 36 with diamond bezel; HOWEVER I've decided to also get a 41. yay!
@@justshazz01 Yeah, I actually have a 16.3 cm wrist , so a bit less than 6.5 in (with big hands/long fingers) and I ended up getting the Datejust 41 and it looks great.
They have the oyster perpetual in 39 mm but it wears slightly smaller in my opinion. This size would be perfect for the datejust because it has the rolled edge bezel like the 36 mm unlike the 41mm dj which has a flatter bezel as standard(obviously not talking about fluted bezel.
I have a 20cm wrist, and the 36mm is waaaay too small. The 41mm isn't even a traditional 41mm, it's actually 40mm.....and to be honest I still wish my DJ41 WAS actually 41mm!
The DJ41 case design is so refined I thought it was a 36mm model the day I tried one on. I remember asking the boutique SA if she was sure the watch on my wrist was the 41. It definitely wears smaller than a 41mm which makes it a better choice than the 36mm in my opinion.

36mm seems best for purely a dress watch if one has normal sized wrists (I’d say guys height of 5’-5” to 6’-2”) Doesn’t get caught on your shirt cuff or jacket sleeve. Doesn’t attract too much attention. Your boss isn’t going to think he overpays you and have you have no taste because you have a big flashy dress watch. Understated elegance is key with a dress watch. For big guys/wrists the 41mm may just fit better proportionally. However I have see lots of British SAS dudes wear old school 36mm on big frames and they can pull it off. Sport watches that are big are fun tho. Explorer, gmt, submariner, etc.
The 36 is the one. Perfect size. 34 for small guys. The larger dial looks goofy on a watch this dressy imho. Same rings true for the sports line, the 42 cases don’t hold a candle to the 40. Even the Explorer 39 scrapped. I’ll stick with the classics on my 7.5 wrist all day.
