Social media lately but TikTok especially REALLY exacerbated my moral OCD. It felt like I was a “bad person” if I scrolled through something that I wasn’t in the headspace to see at a certain time because “oh if you really cared you wouldn’t scroll; the news isn’t talking about this; if you scroll you’re harming my reach on the algorithm” and that paired with all the comments on EVERYTHING being vile and disturbing it’s so hard to be on social media these days. I want to keep up with my friends and look at art and hear about current events, not be told every ten seconds that I’m an awful person because I scrolled too fast on an app or I liked a post by someone who said something bad that I didn’t know about

    • @toribees327

I also have OCD and I feel the same way. I started to realize that if I already knew what was going on, and had done literally anything to help, that I could scroll away. Especially if it already had thousands of likes, there wasn't much more I could do. Just watching more videos like that only stressed me out more and I think if a video is made to help people, then it should not be hurting me.

    • @qryptid
      @qryptid Месяц назад +8

Relate so hard to this. It feels like the solution is stepping away but then stepping away further exacerbates the guilt because if I cared then I wouldn't step away and the guilt spiral continues. It's tough.
Logically I know you or I don't owe anyone the distress of viewing that stuff and obvs you're not a bad person if you're not in the place for it, but that doesn't change the feelings it activates.

It's ironic how gatekept the topic of mental health is by those that are neurotypical. Often it seems that those afflicted with illnesses have their opinions and voices belittled based on the peculiarities in which they present themselves. This mentality completely disrgards the fact that many of these "peculiarities" or differences displayed by the mentally ill are either symptomatic of said illness or coping mechanisms. To have your coping mechanisms (such as your dedication to fashion and style) be used shame you or discredit your mental illness is SO backwards that it baffles me. Let's work through this together as a community to remove the shame, because our voices deserve to be heard regardless of how we present ourselves. I will take your opinions and experiences very seriously, regardless of how you look!

TikTok is extremely toxic in my opinion, people are so rude and mean to each other there... people always describe TikTok as chill and how everyone is so nice and understanding but I disagree with that opinion I saw the most rude people on TikTok, honestly Instagram users feel so much nicer at this point so I never get that "now post that on Instagram Reels" when TikTok users aren't better, Gen Z and Alpha want to believe so badly they're better, more tolerant than Millenials but to be honest they are not and I'm a Gen Z myself (or a Zillenial because I'm an older Gen Z)

it's not even a generational thing, it's something about short-form algorithm-driven content. instagram reels, facebook reels, youtube shorts, twitter, and tiktok can all have wildly different userbases of vastly different ages and demographics, but the results are ALWAYS the same in my experience. People are NASTY. They stop seeing these posts as thoughtful creations made by real people and just experience it as products being thrown at them by a robot.
Much like what Pixie described, when you're scrolling these heavily algorithm-driven short-form spaces, there's no time to breathe and no choice being made between looking at content you actually enjoy and want to see more of vs. what the algorithm thinks will drive up engagement (ragebait, ads, or content it thinks you'll like because you spent a few extra seconds on a similar post but you don't actually care about). One second you're watching an artist you love and the next you're seeing hate speech or war crimes or some weird guy with a podcast who thinks women are objects.
There's no autonomy. There's very little choice in what you're being shown. There's no consistent following and community built up in each creator's space, just people who sort of end up there on accident and are often mad about it for one reason or another. Posts end up "breaching containment" as I've heard some people say, and creators get bombarded with people who hate them and everything they stand for.
The algorithm just sees that a lot of people commented, not the content of the comments, so it keeps recommending these videos that these people hate to them resulting in more angry comments resulting in a bigger push by the algorithm to recommend that content..... etc. etc.
It's unstable and toxic by design.
this happened on the old web all the time too, but not to as extreme of a degree, not because people were better back then (they weren't. at all) but because the spaces they spent time in were generally more curated. The jerks and bigots had to go out of their way to find people they didn't like if they wanted to leave a nasty comment. Now it just gets shoveled towards them automatically without a single thought, and there's not a ton of good moderation tools at the moment to help creators get them out of their space. It sucks. I just spend all my time on regular youtube and tumblr these days, I even installed some addons to make youtube more like its old layout so my subscriptions are my home page instead of reccomendations. It's made things a lot nicer honestly, no regrets.

I agree about it being overstimulating, I stopped using it for the same reason. It's an emotional roulette wheel, and you can only control what you're seeing if you specifically tag-search, and even then that's a gamble. Just not worth the emotional rollercoaster. But the content is way better/more personalized than RUclips Shorts algorithm, and insta reels are in between for me. And because it's so short form and you can see so many, I end up forgetting most of them, it's basically a mind-wipe.

its so overstimulating. I hardly ever use tiktok for all those reasons you listed. I also used to have an ex who would send me a lot of tiktoks and would end up having over hundred unseen messages which would just add to how overstimulating and overwhelming the app is for me.

The fact people are saying things like "Oh, you have this? You should be more ashamed or embarrassed" is disgusting to me. When you have something unknown for years then get evaluated to finally understand what's been going on should be a moment of clarity. A name was given to explain all the behaviors, for everything to finally click for the individual and help better understand themselves. Some are happy to finally get that answer of "why am I like this?".
I'm glad you got your answer. It sucks people want to strip that away or don't want to understand. Your talks on DID were helpful. I certainly wasn't aware of it before.

I've never liked TikTok as a platform because short-form content like that makes it impossible to keep up with it. I love RUclips Shorts because theres a homepage to make it stop when i need; you worded it perfectly WHY I felt so bad when scrolling that app and why i quit it initially. I used to like using it for slime videos and soft stims, but anything DID/OSDD community was constant discourse, all my fave fandoms it was nothing but discourse, and it was very easy to encounter constant misinformation in all forms that it drove me angry every time using it :( if I encounter anything there, its through friends filtering it out for me.
your experiences mirror a lot why I find it so hard to share about my disorder and even write / make art about my experiences, people are so judgmental

I used to lose hours and hours of tumblr scrolling and tiktok scrolling, being guilt tripped about things I couldn't do anyting about and exposed to things I didn't want to see.

I had to download an extension to remove youtube shorts and facebook reels from my browser even though I'd already fought and kept myself off of tiktok! I'm a mere ADHDer here but I think you nailed it on the head as to how detrimental and miserably overstimulating those short-form platforms can be on your mental health. My wake up call was when I got bombarded with stuff from the regretful parents reddit and I started spiraling about worst case scenarios when I have a kid with my husband. All it took was a couple minutes of someone reading from a vent reddit, when really all I was wanting was some rapidfire asmr, to just completely floor me and shift my next therapy session into a giant ball of anxiety and worry about the future when I'd actually been doing pretty good with my new copes up to that point. Sheesh! Glad you're doing better, I don't participate a bunch but I always love your videos. ♥

It’s SO overstimulating, the comment section can range from funny to super spammy to a cult-like amount of ppl repeating the same stuff over and over to downright nasty aggression. There’s also a TONNN of disinformation, esp on politics and health. It’s so important to step back and have self awareness about how things are impacting us!

It sucks bc theres so much good creative content on the platform but really no way to filter for what you want to see.

I wish more social media websites let you look at posts without making an account like RUclips does. I don't have Twitter or Tumblr anymore because they were kind of bad for me and I had some bad experiences/bad habits with those websites. Sometimes I'll just click on a link to someone's page or a post someone made because I just want to look at the one thing someone said and I'll immediately get dragged to a page to make an account. Why is it that YT can do this and other places can't?
RUclips is actually one of the few social media websites I allow myself to use. The others are Reddit and Instagram. I'm very selective with what content I engage with on all of those sites. Social media isn't really good for me, I don't think it's good for a lot of people really. And a lot of that comes down to the reasons Pixie was saying. On Reddit specifically, I was following a lot of subreddits that posted upsetting content, which is really something I shouldn't have done. Not to mention, all of these sites spawn exhausting, upsetting arguments that are usually super pointless. Everyone should be careful with social media.

Even scrolling thru RUclips shorts makes my brain feel fried and overstimulated. Like i just came home from a giant get together where everyone was talking at once, for hours. But just like 30 mins or an hour makes my brain so icky and tired out. I dont have tiktok, and usually try to only watch a few shorts on my sub page then click off and go to a nice long vid i can craft or do chores to, way nicer way to spend time. Plus i dont feel like its time wasted if i do some crafting or cleaning while i watch. More like icktok lol

I often stop playing video games or consuming social media posts for months or permenantly because the mental stress that these sort of things cause in me makes them really addicting and I will just spend all my time hyperfixating on them to get my fix without realizing that that is what I am doing. When I do realize it the only way to break myself of it is to cut it out of my life. I just go cold turkey. Sometimes I will add in slower forms of entertainment into my life (reading a book, making a 300pc puzzle) to help lower my stress levels while I break myself of my addiction. Stopping an addiction when I notice it is a big hurdle for me but doing it makes me feel so much better and the longer I am away from it the easier it is.
I never got on tiktok because I knew it would cause a new addiction for me and I don't want that. Fast-paced shortform content creates stress in the brain and the little bit of dopamine that comes with it makes it addicting.

i understand spreading awareness, but the devastating footage of natural disasters on some casual downtime was something i would not have to deal with 50 years ago! i uninstalled TT after that, and other media platforms soon followed because i would “harmlessly” scroll, and just keep seeing sad and horrible situations that NO one can help with. all for what? i’m not capable of doing anything to help these people. i just get stressed out and sad

The same thing happened to me with tiktok!! I actually did a small study recently in my psych undergrad on this sort of topic, it that found that people with higher social media use times also showed lower emotion regulation & self-control scores. (Whether the social media use caused that or vice versa, I can't say). When I was researching there were a variety of other papers that showed similar results. The infinite scroll of wildly shifting tones can't be good for the mind!!

I've been a watcher from your lolita and party kei days, I always loved your content because you always bravely try to be positive despite your many challenges. (I've also posted in your FB group and been so so so happy when you responded.) When you first came out that you have DID I did feel like, oh yeah this tiktok disease is so cringe and I wish you didn't have it. Such a rude thought but everyone had it at the time so it did kind of feel like a trend like in the early 2010s when everyone suddenly have anxiety and OCD. Which to be fair, that's also a rude thought I had. Anyways I just wanted to say despite my reservations I couldn't stop watching you content because I like Pixie regardless of this revelation. Over time I've come to learn to respect DID, it's not my business to police other people's brains. Yall are such a great human that I'm glad I have the opportunity to watch and I hope yall dont experience such negativity in the future.

Big agree on a lot of what you're saying about TT as a platform; I also find it extremely overstimulating to the point of it affecting me negatively. Haven't actively participated in it in a long time, and I'm much better for it. I'm pretty active on Instagram but avoid reels for the same reason. RUclips shorts feel okay because they're not constantly shoved in my face. I also very much love longer RUclips essays, and even 20 minute videos like this where I /can/ go do the dishes & just listen, look up every so often if I need some visuals, and scroll back easily if necessary! TikTok just constantly feeds you dopamine bumps. Who really has time to just be sitting around scrolling these videos all day? I have stuff to do, I just need background noise lol!!
I think what you said about humans not being built to consume content that rapidly is so on the point. It's unnatural, we all need to chill tf out!
    Hope you're doing well, cheers!

This is really nice to see someone really explain what my grip's been with tiktok. I've been meaning to get into it since it's been out. That's what a lot of people around me consume, I'm aware there's a lot of stuff on there that can be useful. I don't have any political issues with it or anything.
But I truly don't know how people do it. After a bit of scrolling there's just too much information and it moves faster than brain can process it. And I could never get with that because what even is the point of having information even less obviously practical stuff like comedy if you don't absorb any of it ??
It'll make me dissociate after some times.

im so sorry about the harassment you expierienced. I have a very limited knowledge of DID as I dont have it, but even in my studies as a psych major i can tell you what they did was highly unethical. they completely generalized a disorder and had no right to treat someone's health as a debate topic. what they did was disgusting, and you should not have had to be treated with such disrespect

The entire app designed to grab your attention for as long as possible. I honestly think it is scary in a way.
Also a lot of people market their products which is just annoying, especially since you have such little control over what you get to see.
I only really like youtube and sometimes instagram. I don't even like instagram really, I just like that I get to see what my friends from 10 years ago are up to now (apperently one became a model. Good for him!). Except for that I really don't use it either

Not only that, but the parts that spent time fronting changed, and they just were not interested in interacting with DID media. Also, younger systems permeate the space and we don't feel all that interested in interacting with them. We’re too old 😭 even our kids aren’t interested 😂

i COMPLETELY agree on the overstimulation aspect (as well as the rest but THATTTTT part). i set a 30 minutes daily limit on it and it broke me of my doomscrolling entirely. i don’t open the app unless my boyfriend sends me something pffft. i think tiktok has leaned into capitalizing on the whole doomscroll thing. twitter and youtube r my safe safe homes as well. the way tiktok functions, i don’t see anyway that it could possibly ever be a safe space?? for especially nd folk. which is maybe a soft thing to say but i think getting to choose the nature of the content you consume is better for your brain than the alternative. because if you’re faced with spam of two drastically different videos, you’re not going to really take in any of it which defeats the entire purpose of watching a serious educational video. tiktok also does absolutely nothing abt the raging ableism in every corner of its app, nor the privacy and safety of children. overall i just don’t think it’s good for creators or viewers. good good video mama pix!!

I must say that I am not a fan of reels and short videos and this is just on Instagram and facebook as I've never used tik tok - it's because you can't control them and they just auto play them. It must be quite bad when it' intersperses negative things with stuff that you enjoy - it stops being relaxing and forms a detrimental association with it.

I find what goes down on tiktok extremely important but the way that the information comes through is...a lot. I understand not everybody is going to watch a longer video on an interview or read an article so this is really an effective way to quickly get info out but I personally would rather have the long form of receiving that information for myself. I think people like to bring up the idea that nobody has attention spans anymore which I find to be a really generalized statement because I actually think I pay so much attention that the energy I spend trying to keep up with DIY videos and horrible tragedies or people's mental health crises on tiktok makes me burn out real fast and then I can't look at my phone anymore lol. I do not mind if it takes me days to sit on and digest 1 crucial piece of information on the internet I think I take it in better that way instead of the big thing whizzing past my head and being easier to forget. The fast paced videos have to claw their way to the top just to be engaged with for a couple of seconds. It's like I'm getting informed if something serious is going on but not informed enough to process it
Also just yeah people are mean as hell on tiktok I hate coming across tiktok lives where every single type of person is flying in and throwing tomatoes at someone or being a huge creep.
And lastly I really loved DiD tiktok sometimes because the friendly people were amazing but there was too much nastiness and I guess maybe some people were faking but more than anything I think it was yet another incarnation of people coming up with a new reason to say "you have colored hair so you're a liar" and to me that was worse than worrying about who is genuine and who is not.

(Also giving my unasked for opinion under the show more, so ya dont have to read it if ya dont want )
I know that its a very American mindset to just say "You should sue lol" and I think you even said "I'm not going to do that" in one of the videos where you talked the original backlash related to your DID, but hun you literally said you are suffering from the damage that it caused Still!! Reconsider.

I know it sucks from a business perspective, since it's one less place that you can market your clothes. Everything I hear about tiktok makes me more and more confident in never getting an account there. It seems like a terrible place, not just because of the algorithm, but also the culture of the people there. The short form media, the shortened attention span, the constant barrage of stimuli, the misinformation, the harassment- there's so many reasons to not want to be on that website, completely ignoring anyone who would be susceptible to harassment. Women, people with any kind of disability, trans and nonbinary people, anyone who isnt white or doesnt speak English or have a different religion. You couldnt pay me to use tiktok.
