    Here is the Michael Penix Jr. Comparison No One Is Talking About…
    Now that we are somewhat removed from the Atlanta Falcons selecting Michael Penix Jr. with the eight pick in the NFL Draft, I kind of want to see if there is a more nuanced discussion to be had here.
    I know sports talk at its core is all about the low-hanging fruit, and the low-hanging fruit here is wild reactions insulting the Falcons. I get it. But if you dig a little deeper, there is actually a very apt comparison here that no one is talking about. At the 2000 NFL Draft, the New York Jets didn't need a quarterback but still took one who also happened to turn 24 that season.
    There are so many similarities between the Falcons drafting Michael Penix Jr. in 2024 and the New York Jets taking Chad Pennington in 2000 that it's impossible to ignore. Admittedly, it is not 100% like for like, and we'll get to that in a bit. But let's explore why it feels like history is repeating.
    Penix and Pennington were 24 years old entering their rookie seasons. Physically, they are both 6'3 and close to the same weight. Both are more athletic than they get credit for. They are not scramblers by any means but are elusive and can navigate the pocket. Penix has more arm strength than Pennington, but the latter was no slouch pre-shoulder injury.
    When you look at their senior season stats, it is downright uncanny. Now, in the modern era, Penix threw more, which means more attempts and more yards. But here is a comparison of some other key metrics in the final year on campus:
    Penix: 65.9 completion percentage, 36 TD passes and 7 interceptions.
    Pennington: 67.9 completion percentage, 37 TD passes and 6 interceptions.
    They both had untraditional college careers. Penix had injuries and transferred. Pennington started his freshman season leading Marshall to the D1-AA Championship Game, was benched and redshirted the following year and would go on to hold the Thundering Herd after that, when they made the transition to DI.
    This, by the way, is just the start of this uncanny comparison.

    Love this video, Pennington was so underrated. Everyone sleeping on Penix is gonna find out real quick that he just might be the best QB in this draft and the arm talent is absurd.
    I graded Penix higher than Caleb with my tie breaker coming down to character. Penix is a great guy and Kirk is just the Alex Smith to Penix's Mahomes

    The Saints, Raiders, and Broncos were all interested in MPJ.

      I dont think it was a mistake, If kirk stays healthy we have the best starting QB in our weak division. gives us a chance to get into the playoffs for the first time since 2017. Plus Kirk has all the intangibles needed for a FA signing to the Falcons (embarrassing the shit out of the saints on national TV with the Minn Miracle)

    Here's another scenario. Maybe the Falcons didn't see the value in the defensive players that the "experts" said they should draft. Dallas Turner didn't go 9th when we didn't pick him he went 17th. And apparently the Falcons were trying to trade back up to pick up Laiatu Latu. If they had scored him and Penix everybody would be praising the Falcons picks. QB's are at a premium thus the stretch by the Broncos to pick up Bo Nix who will never see the field. In a couple of years if Cousins works, you have the option of trading Penix and picking up some high first round draft picks or quality players. Besides in a couple of years Terry Fontenot will be considered a genius or he will be fired whether he had drafted Penix or not so what did he have to lose?

    You are joking, right! Absurd comparison. UW is in major 5 conferences (PAC12 soon Big Ten) Penix lead college football in passing (2022 & 2023) The only QB WHO threw for over 4,500 in successive seasons. The only other QB to do that was Patrick Mahomes. Chad P never ran a sub 4.5 forty in his life.

      How many more games did Penix play this season than Pennington? That's right, three. If you extend Pennington's passing yards per game average in 1999, he would have had 4,747, which is damn close to 4,900. And he would have far more touchdowns than Penix in that case.
      And Penix didn't run a sub-4.5. There are like nine different times from his pro day with the general consensus being somewhere in the sub-4.6 range. Pennington would have been in the 4.6.-4.7 range with that kind of pro day home cooking given he ran 4.8 at the Combine.

    I do like what you're saying and trying to do here. As a Falcons fan, it's a very, very smart move. We have our present and future covered. The 2025 QB draft class doesn't seem to be as good or stacked as this year was. Also, we shouldn't be anywhere near a top 10 pick in the next couple years. I would like to say a couple more things.
    Penix has more athleticism than Pennington. He also definitely has way, way more arm strength than Pennington. That was one of his biggest weaknesses.
    Also, to correct another thing you said: Kirk has been consistently in the tops of the league statistically year in and year out.

    if raheem morris and zac robinson said they see resemblances in matthew stafford then im not mad at them for taking him. i was mad they didn't take latu, but ik for a fact i would've been heated in a couple years from now when we're drafting in the bottom half, kirks contract is almost up and now its either (a) try to package a haul to move up (b) take a shot on a 2nd-3rd rounder (after ridder im good on that.) (c) potentially go back into qb hell. (im DEFINITELY good on that.) id rather see this team have a smooth qb transition and see a decade of good qb play then wtf just happened the past 3 years. at least they have a plan at the most important position.

    If the Falcon's want Penix to be their future QB, then why sign Cousins as a bridge quarterback for $180 million?! That makes no sense, a more sensible scenario would have been to trade for Fields and let him and Penis battle it out for the starting position

    • @Stinkinbadgez
      @Stinkinbadgez Месяц назад

      They went hard after Cousins thinking he would be the QB for now and the future. Penix comes into the picture and wows the management and coaches. They talk about it and decide to change future plans. Use Cousins for 2 years and prepare Penix. Dump Cousins after 2 years and in comes the new guy. IT WAS A CHANGE OF PLANS. You will fall in love with Penis. He owns Washington state. We wanted him so bad for Seattle. PS take you hat off to Atlanta management for having the courage to make this kind of decision.

    • @kennethmorsee
      @kennethmorsee Месяц назад

      They didn't know at the time that they signed Cousins that Penix would be available at 8. We know that now that the draft is over but 6 weeks ago the Falcons couldn't have known that Penix would fall into their lap.

      @@kennethmorsee From what I heard all indications seem to point that Penix would be a late first round/second round pick and that McCarthy was ranked higher. So he should have been available at 8. So I don't buy into the falling into their lap scenario. I think they may have gotten buyer's remorse or got concerned about Cousin's injury. Regardless I think someone dropped the ball somewhere in this draft.

    Vinny Testeverde wasn’t a new qb with a huge contract.
    Falcons are picking in the top 10 for a reason. Their team is bad, with many holes to fill.
    In the Packers argument, their incumbent qb’s were threatening retirement.
