  • Will McFadden is joined by former NFL quarterback and Westwood One analyst Ryan Leaf to discuss the Falcons' offseason. Ryan shares why he feels Atlanta nailed the pick with Michael Penix Jr., who he feels was the best quarterback in this year's draft. He also explains why a healthy Kirk Cousins sets the Falcons up to be this year's version of the Detroit Lions in the NFC. Will and Ryan also discuss the team's 2024 schedule and take a trip down memory lane to Ryan's only regular-season start against the Falcons, which featured a rookie quarterback named Michael Vick making his first NFL start. Enjoy!

    Drafting Penix was a GREAT move by Atlanta. Penix is a good Future option AND a nice sub for Cousins IF Cousins--coming off a big injury--goes down with injury. Plus, best case, Penix will be Starter ready in 2 years. Also, having Penix gives you leverage over a mercenary like Kirk Cousins. Now the Falcons can show Cousins the Door after 2 years instead of the whole 4. Drafting Penix is a GREAT move by Atlanta.

It’s all changing before our eyes and I am all in for hearing it all. Praise or complaint. Any publicity is good publicity at this point as long as fans are being heard in large numbers. I'll admit, draft night I was pissed we didn't go defense, but that night I started doing my homework on Penix Jr., and I watched tape from his Indiana days up to the National Championship. What I saw was a QB who could make every throw from short bubble screens to deep bombs and he was accurate and had the arm to deliver the rock. I'm excited to see what he can become with a veteran QB in Kirk Cousins who has excellent preparation skills and has that dog in him as well. Atlanta, we are going to be in good hands for the next 15 years at QB!

    • @Falconsriseup
      @Falconsriseup 13 дней назад +7

      I said it come draft night and i'll continue to say it in 2 years when kirk is starting to show his wear a bit and his guarantees are up. Everyone will be thrilled and praising fontenot that we don't have to trade up from 18 to 32 into the top 5 for a QB thats not as talented as Penix coming out. For me Penix is the 3rd best Qb coming out between last year, this year, and the next 2 drafts. Only 2 guys i have over him are Stroud last year and Daniels this year. I can 1000% guarantee every falcon fan and their mother would be furious when we would have to give up what Carolina did or more to go get our QB 2 years from now in a worse QB class. Thats at minimum 2 1sts, 2 2nds, and a player equivalent to AJ Terrell or London. Thats what the Panthers gave up to move up less than we would have to for Young. So if you are telling me i only have to give up 1 pick at 8 and can keep all those 5+ picks and good vet player for a better QB prospect in Penix. You better bet im taking that over taking 1 edge rusher now.

He threw the ball very high, almost every pass, and the adrenaline was flowing. @Paula-mv8im 8 дней назад

      As a Kirk fan (and Vikings' fan), I don't believe that McCarthy is even gonna be playing next season. That's why they signed a bridge quarterback in Darnold. The Vikings GM got rid of all of the players that he didn't bring in or draft unless they were stars. And he wanted his own quarterback. Kirk was playing at a top 10 level in 2022 and a top 5 level in 2023. Had the Vikings GM really wanted Kirk, they would have signed him to a long term deal after the GM was hired. It wasn't about the money either. In 2022, Kirk offered to take less (than his 35 million) for a three year deal and the GM still said no.

    Trent Dilfer, Brad Johnson, Kurt Warner, Russell Wilson, Drew’s Bress, Nick Foles and Brady have won since 2000 and were not first round picks. This notion you need a first round QB to win a Super Bowl is false. Big Ben, Peyton, Eli, Aaron, Staford, Mahomes were first rounders that won. It’s basically half. You can do it if you build around a solid QB.

    A little critical thinking might’ve benefited the comparison you were making with Detroit.
    Certainly, London has been let down by QB play, but he’s not on ARSB’s level right now. Similarly, we’ve never seen KP come close to La Porta’s TD production. Nor do we have an Aiden Hutchinson in our pass rush. Sure, we have high hopes for Zac Robinson, but you can’t just assume he’ll be Ben Johnson.
    So much of what this regime is pursuing is theory/hope/arrogance. As such, you can’t describe it as a win-now approach. They’ve just not built in enough redundancy (or quality) at multiple position groups.

    You had me until you made all those excuses for Penix against Michigan. Why can't people just admit they were wrong about their predictions tip your cap to your opponent?.... especially when they completely dominated you.
    Saban didn't announce his retirement until after the national championship game and Washington coach was not their 1st choice so saying they weren't prepared because he was leaving makes absolutely no sense.
    Penix is going to be an incredible QB in the NFL Ryans assessment on him is spot on but is performance vs Michigan happened too. Both can be correct.
    Don't get it twisted I think Penix is going to be a stud in the NFL. Michigan's defense also picked off Stroud twice last yr shutting him down in 2nd half beating him convincingly for the 2nd year in a row and Stroud turned out okay.
