Great vid! I love how you point out that Penix shows decent athleticism and speed when he does run, he just doesn’t do it. Breaks the narrative that he provides no mobility, he likely doesn’t run much cuz of his injury history. There is ENOUGH mobility in my opinion.

I think its a good nod to his development as a QB. At the next level hes going to be asked to stand in the pocket and make throws, but not be a dynamic rusher. I like that hes matured out of using his legs and really worked on ability to get the ball out. The legs are there, but he uses them as a last resort, vs getting frazzled as so many young and mobile QBs do and trying to run out of the pocket.

Michael Penix is probably the most interesting QB prospet in this draft. This man could hit a needle 40 yards out one game, and then look like a completely different person the next game. I really think if given the proper development cycle and coaching he could potentially be a star in the league.

A good QB coach could really mold him into a very good quarterback in the NFL. He already has the ability, it's about consistently getting it out of him that's the problem. If a team with historically good coaching and QB coaching can get him on the team, I really do think he'll have a solid career in the NFL. However, he goes to a team like the Panthers or Redskins and he's out of the league in 5 years or less. Barring the litany of injuries he had at IU and Washington, his college career is very respectable.

I feel like Penix's mechanics could use some work. The pressure that he faced vs Michigan was grueling, especially for a guy who has battled injury...
I hope I'm wrong, but if he has a bad O line, I'm worried bad looks or even an injury can easily arise that ruins any starting chance that teams will give him. I'd put him over Bo Nix for sure. But he could be a star! Who knows.

If you want to see Penix as an athlete, look at his tape at Indiana. Deboer chose not to let him play as much as an athlete as Washington but it's there. Once thing that isn't included in the game film that people watch on Penix is the weather conditions he played through. Go look at his games against Utah and Oregon State in 2023 as well as Oregon State 2022 and see what he does when there's excessive wind and excessive rain. Dude is special and has the opportunity to keep learning and growing once he reaches the league but as for now he has the things necessary to be good (timing, accuracy, ability to read a defense) and with more practice at the next level he can clean up some of the areas he's a little weaker and transition into the elite QB's the league has to offer. GO DAWGS!

College is a start but personally I believe his coach’s don’t understand how to prep to set him up in situations where he is pressured. His down sides where ignored and you can see that in his games. And we should also check his leadership. Sure he had his team with him around him but the nfl is a different beast.

Interesting vid. As a Husky fan, season ticketholder, etc. I expected to hear and see the examples of Penix problems that really typified those games in which he struggled. And that was throwing off his back foot under pressure, and sailing his throws. The number of times he missed his receivers high, and sometimes very high, was pretty significant when he was pressured, or clearly felt pressured. Did it a lot more than he missed them low over the season. But that release is lightning quick, and the gun is truly powerful. A very tempting pick, I'd say, from mid-first to mid-second....

  • @wadopotato33

His arm is elite. I saw him play live against my team and his throws are always tight spirals with some zip on them.

HIs throwing delivery is funky and low. He played behind a great offensive line and had great talent at the receiver position. He will have to transform much of his game to make an impact in the NFL. He will be 24 in May - that could be a positive or negative. In the biggest game of the year he wasn't very good. Seems like a great Christian guy with heart. One more ACL blow out on the right knee and football will be the last thing to worry about, he will have trouble walking by age 50.

I know this strategy is generic and is a commodity that most teams dont have but he seems like he could really benefit from sitting behind a vet like Minshew or Browning for at least a portion of the year while getting groomed for the starting job. The thing im worried about is not facing pressure much in college but with preseason reps and time to get adjusted he should be okay as long as he isnt thrown into the fire.

Old college players were never red flags, it has only became common to try to leave for the NFL as fast as humanly possible in the past 13 years or so.

he's the hardest qb prospect to evaluate. he played with 3 NFL draft picks at WR and had a stud OL and they play in the pieces of the pac12. yes he's a great deep ball thrower but honestly, there are a lot of guys with zip in their arms that'll burn you if they get to sit there and load up. add the obvious medical concerns and he's a no go for me.

Penix is the number 3 QB in this Draft behind Caleb and Drake Maye and maybe the best pure passer in this Draft

No Maye is not better. CW isn’t a better QB either he’s a better improviser and that’s an important notion. Penix is the best QB in the draft and he’ll prove it as Daniels will also end up being great. CW will have to learn the position more is more about pre snap and less about scrambling. That Johnny Manziel shit gets nerfed in the NFL. Maye might be a total bust. So wildly inconsistent.

A few things that stood out to me that capture the why Penix is QB1. You pointed out his greatness and consistency to replicate the tough or routine go-to nfl throws like the back shoulder(tough) or crosser(routine). Along with you said “he always seems to find the one on one coverage”, and throws accurately most of the time even if they’re not open he gives them a chance. That’s a mark of a great QB. That means he’s reading the defense and manipulating the coverage. To me CW and Maye are far too concerned with playing cowboy and hero ball.

I got to be honest you are splitting hairs here he has way more upside. He is comfortable in the pocket he can read defenses well and he his hard to blitz bc of his release. I honestly believe he is better thank your guy at LSU he had multiple games in 2022 where he just don’t show up. I truly believe P is nfl ready he can run play action or under center and you said his accuracy is off at time and I’m sorry I don’t now what film you been watching but he is a sniper hands down.

He should not be a first round pick. Second round maybe. Not first round. First round is for guaranteed contracts. You don't want a guaranteed contract on a guy with 4 season ending injuries including 2 ACL's. He will have to be a pocket passer in the NFL. And he needs great receivers. His throwing motion will be an issue as well. It's too low.
