I feel an eerie connection to this crash as my mother is has freind whose sister died in this crash. To all the victims, rest in peace. 🕊
Air New Zealand the day before the accident they changed the maps in the on-board computer and did not inform the crew about it, so the crew steered the plane in the wrong direction and crashed into Mount Erebus. R.I.P for the beautiful DC-10 and all 239 peoples who died.
It was 257 people who perished. They weren’t where they thought they should be and whiteout conditions sadly sealed their fate.
That's a pretty drastic thing for the crew to do, simply because the navigation unit and/or flight ops didn't tell the two pilots about the change. But they say that NZ is quite a mad place in any case. That's illegal, you know. Are you sure they would have gone that far?
Surely they could have done something less harmful to let the Air NZ company staff know that they'd been unhappy about not being told about this INS course change.
With what you've just written, I'm now also wondering whether or not the Civil Aviation Division of the NZ Ministry of Transport (who were responsible for overseeing the accuracy of the Ross Sea and the NZ to Williams Field/Antarctica radio navigation charts) had also changed both the airways tracks as well as the Minimum Safe Altitude and Minimum Reception Altitude depictions on the route and area charts that the two pilots had been both provided with also.
It's a very scary thought, isn't it? The thought of both pilots having no way to navigate a passenger carrying airliner, all the way down there.

The creepy thing is the wreckage is still at the site today it has not been removed this crash was 1979 there's a pic of it in 2006 the fuselage is still there.

In the middle section where the wings are I thought that some people did survive the initial crash but may have been unconscious so the fire would of killed the last people but even if they did make it out they would have died before help arrived

I didn't know that. Thanks for the startling revelation. It really surprises me.
I know that in the beginning the "10's" had a problem with a rear cargo door locking mechanism, which led to fatalities. The French (Black Forest) event is one that provides solid evidence of this issue (later fixed).
Also, the rather silly design in relation to running all hydraulic lines alongside of each other within an area with the potential to be damaged certainly did raise eyebrows, but this wasn't until after the (wing) leading edge breach event with an DC-10 at Chicago back in 1979.
The DC-8 has been involved in around 146 air accidents with 2,256 fatalities. From what I have read, this is higher than both the DC-10 and the MD-11 combined.
Some state that the DC-9 is considered to be more "dangerous" than the DC-10, aircraft total hours flown.
On the basis of hull loss (or total write off) my understanding is that Boeing 727 apparently comes close to being the worst on record amongst passenger jet aircraft in relation to "safeness" of any particular model. I cannot confirm whether or not it really is.
The Boeing 737-200 is also considered to be worse than the DC-10 in relation to a comparative safety record with 68 air accidents to date. This has led to around 2910 fatalities and (of course) many permanent injuries as well.
Lastly, the LET-10 (which isn't generally very well known) seems to have quite a poor track record (safety wise) also. You may wish to take a look at this particular aircraft model.
