AMD keeps it's signature efficiency there with performance per watt, however it will have to start improving it as Intel is striking back with Lunar Lake while both r still far from what can be achieved with custom Arm SoCs like those from Apple for example. I want to take it but it pisses me off to have to transfer my 2 TB from my Z1 extreme. I don't have the motivation, I prefer to wait for the Rog Ally 2.
Only after watching this I realized the Ally x reminds me of the Sega Game gear. I guess it's good progress after 30 years considering this is a portable and powerful x86 computer-dream come true for pocketable PC. As a gaming device, i feel the progress a bit sluggish. The $800 asking price is a bit steep considering the only huge upgrade is the RAM. I guess next AMD APU and handhelds will cost more??
In Europe it costs €900 which is like $1000, so it's way too expensive for now... considering the original one had almost the same price at launch in EU and I got it at a sale recently for $350 😅 The best thing you could do is wait...
Why don't you use the full 8gb of vram as the extra vram and ram added will help with performance. Compare the ROG Ally X where it should benefit the upgrade, please.
even though the screen is 7in? it lacks the immersion for AAA games. i wouldn't get it if i was you, i would wait till they start producing 8.4in screens versions instead
@@draco2xxI agree with that statement but using the ROG ALLY for a year, it hasn’t bother me, but to play PC games on a handheld, 7” is the bare minimum and 8” is the sweet spot.

Honestly with how the Rog ally is constantly on sale this is just not worth it. I have a full sized SSD inside my original Rog ally. Wait for the 2nd Ally
Worst part(s) about the original are thermal management and poor battery life. If either of those aren't an issue than going to get the X doesn't make much sense but seeing as some of you have eGPU's and multiple portable game consoles, both of which make zero sense either, then my reply likely doesn't make sense.
You should have upped the vram a litte to see what kind of performance boost that would give the games. Realistically you dont need 16 gb for the OS especially if dont have multiple tabs and apps open at once. I would have bumped it up to 12 and then left 12 for the OS plenty for both.....
Man ETA, I was hoping to see the usual racing games in your review. Since this device does very well with console emulation, rGT4 or Forza Horizon should run fully speed in performance mode. Crazy for a handheld to do that and still have more than reasonable battery life.
Been seeing reviews on best buy that some people have been having it not turn on at all even with it plugged in someone had the right trigger completely stop working after 30 mins but mostly the bad reviews were about how the battery will not hold a charge at all or it just won't turn on so take that as you will
2:15 They should not upgrade, it's not something worth spending that much more money into a company that can't even provide proper warranty support. And it's not yet on RDNA4 or Zen5 so it's not a performance upgrade too. It's way better to buy Steam Deck Oled in this price point.
Ik ppl talk bad about the lil cardboard stands, but honestly, its better than nothing The amount of times i have needed a stand for my deck and i have to use my phone stand all wobbly is crazy lol At least this one stands it up firmly and if u take care of it, it shouldnt rip or break
Hey ETA: My only question is this: Is there any reason you would know why they couldn't up the memory on the Original Ally to 7500 mt/s via firmware update? I ask because I own a few of the smaller Handheld brands like AoKZoe A1 Pro and they did exactly that. They shipped with lower speed ram and updated them later via over the air firmware update.
If that's true, the RAM in those handhelds you mentioned were already capable of that and were probably downlclocked for stability reasons until the companies decided they had a good mass market firmware to distribute. The ROG Ally's RAM is already functionally maxed out. If you want the new speed RAM on the old Ally, you'll have to solder better quality silicon capable of those speeds into it.
@@k3nsh1n4life+1 the ram in those handhelds were underclocked, they just updated it to the speed it was rated at our supposed to have been. I believe the OG Rog Ally can be physically upgraded with 32GB 7500mt ram but it's pretty involved, unless you can get a shop or someone to do it for you.
This revised version has 24GB of faster 7500MHz RAM, for 16GB System RAM and 8GB of GPU RAM, would it work well if configured to 18GB of System RAM and 6GB of GPU RAM? Would the TPU sweetspot of performance/battery life be 18Watts? Thank you in advanced.
Question about the Timespy results at 11:43… is that 17w,25, or plugged in 30w? I’m only getting something close to that when I’m plugged in on 30 with my Ally X.
Does this means that XG mobile GPUs are not supported on the new model? I saw that ROG Flow series is kinda discontinued from last year so this might mean the end for XG mobile 😢
try cachyos instead, bazzite currently has an installer issue where the screen is flipped and cut in half forcing you to need a dock and mouse to install correctly. Also cachyos comes with precompiled optimised linux kernals much newer than bazzite, amoungst many other tweaks. Cachy is based on Arch whereas Bazzite is based on Fedora Blue which is owned by RedHat and the less said about that company the better.
If you have the OG Ally already, then no point upgrading. If your in Steam Deck OG or OLED, the jump in performance is massive and the battery life is as good or better than OLED Steam Deck.
At higher wattages maybe, so if you want an hour battery life or play primarily docked. The deck still pumps this thing at low wattages dollar for dollar.
@@Mantennerno, the bigger battery size means that even at 25 watts it has comparable battery life to thw oled deck at 15 watts. And at 15 watts it has even more battery life The only area where the steam deck beats the ally is in inde games and the battery life on those.

I want to take it but it pisses me off to have to transfer my 2 TB from my Z1 extreme. I don't have the motivation, I prefer to wait for the Rog Ally 2.
If u already own a Ally z1 extreme, it is really not worth the upgrade. Just wait for Ally 2 so you dont kick yourself after a year or two.
hopefully the next revision is a little smaller, same screen size but smaller overall. battery could be something in between the two rog ally devices
I beg to differ the bigger back button is more comfortable and you can rest your fingers while holding the ally.
If you dont have one, why even speak on it? lol
No its not do you even have one? 😂
the normal ally feels like shit to hold. I have had one since it released and I never feel comfortable holding it.
@@Peraliq after having the new one, it is a understatement on how much more comfortable the ally x is, huge improvement.
imagine if these things have touchscreen to type on or even a qwerty slide out or on the back
its literally a full portable pc
they do have a touch screen
It is a touchscreen lol
Only after watching this I realized the Ally x reminds me of the Sega Game gear. I guess it's good progress after 30 years considering this is a portable and powerful x86 computer-dream come true for pocketable PC. As a gaming device, i feel the progress a bit sluggish.
The $800 asking price is a bit steep considering the only huge upgrade is the RAM. I guess next AMD APU and handhelds will cost more??
Massive L for us who preordered from JB HiFi in Western Australia, came in to pick up mine today but was told that they dont have the units on hand.
In Europe it costs €900 which is like $1000, so it's way too expensive for now... considering the original one had almost the same price at launch in EU and I got it at a sale recently for $350 😅
The best thing you could do is wait...
Really tough to compete with steamdeck on pricing. Ally X is clearly better, but is it $150-250 better?
Why don't you use the full 8gb of vram as the extra vram and ram added will help with performance. Compare the ROG Ally X where it should benefit the upgrade, please.
Can you test out the ROG Gaming NUC next to see if Manjaro Linux works, especially with the NVIDIA drivers?
I shall be purchasing this soon
even though the screen is 7in? it lacks the immersion for AAA games. i wouldn't get it if i was you, i would wait till they start producing 8.4in screens versions instead
@@draco2xx the 7 inch doesn't bother me
@@draco2xxI agree with that statement but using the ROG ALLY for a year, it hasn’t bother me, but to play PC games on a handheld, 7” is the bare minimum and 8” is the sweet spot.
@@perezcoalten i don't think you've even experienced playing on a 8.4in screen before. i promise you, once you do you'll never go back to play on a 7in screen
@@draco2xx this is a handheld. We don’t need a big @ss screen. 7 is perfect😊
The analog sticks seem to be smaller than the regular ones on the PS5 and Xbox controllers. I don't like the idea of the controllers being fixed to the screen; if you have any problems with the analogs, it will be complicated to fix.
may be i get a rog ally...i hav a rtx2060...which adapeter can i use to connect this gpu with the ally?tb4?m2?at alli expres i only find these m2 adapter kits...no tb3 o.4..???
Honestly with how the Rog ally is constantly on sale this is just not worth it. I have a full sized SSD inside my original Rog ally. Wait for the 2nd Ally
I'm guessing the ROG Ally X will also have heavy sales in the future too
Worst part(s) about the original are thermal management and poor battery life. If either of those aren't an issue than going to get the X doesn't make much sense but seeing as some of you have eGPU's and multiple portable game consoles, both of which make zero sense either, then my reply likely doesn't make sense.
@@Patrick-y4d1z by that time the ally 2 will be out
@@dj4monie not to me. I play mine plugged in on the sofa and have had 0 thermal issues
Any thoughts on a good mobile hotspot for this?
With Strix Point 3 weeks away I don't get what's the point in a 900€ 2023 chip equipped handheld
Honestly the next computer I buy Ill be one of these with an EGPU. Can you run VR games with a gpu?
Ik ppl talk bad about the lil cardboard stands, but honestly, its better than nothing
The amount of times i have needed a stand for my deck and i have to use my phone stand all wobbly is crazy lol
At least this one stands it up firmly and if u take care of it, it shouldnt rip or break
The screen aspect ratio is my issue. Also the size of the screen.
@@arzayus84 yep oled wins
They should have increased the size for sure
Is there a hard disk that emulates old and new games in a size of 500g that you recommend purchasing through the Aliexpress application?
Does the memory assigned to the GPU really make a difference?
Will the Ally X fit in the same travel case as the OG Ally?
probably yes
I heard it doesn’t on some cases
@@OMGdidyouJuStSeeDAT Won't fit in the ROG Ally travel case? I just got mine two months ago but I have just the Z1 not the Extreme.
11:07 vram on both the allys are different from 4gb and 8gb so not much of a fair comparison
Watching people review something I can’t own is not my thing anymore. From PCs to handhelds and more. I’m not into it anymore. Rich people man.
Cool story bro. Why can't you?
Please do a egpu video with benchmarks for the rog ally x
I'm loving mine so far! I have the original one!
It's a miracle he did a comparison between to devices. I never thought this would happen. I wish this would happen more often😂
LMAO RIGHT!
Does this means that XG mobile GPUs are not supported on the new model?
I saw that ROG Flow series is kinda discontinued from last year so this might mean the end for XG mobile 😢
he said it in the video....
Going to put bazzite on mine
try cachyos instead, bazzite currently has an installer issue where the screen is flipped and cut in half forcing you to need a dock and mouse to install correctly.
And at 15 watts it has even more battery life
The only area where the steam deck beats the ally is in inde games and the battery life on those.
Asus Bot

I saw something about 100w chargers and the device using that instead of 65w. Think you could do some benchmarks on that if it is a thing?
That's only the max charging speed. The amount of wattage the Z1E chip can pull remains the same. 100W means you can top off your device faster. 65W chargers are still enough to unlock the full potential of the Ally X.
@@k3nsh1n4lifeFast charging the device at 100W will degrade the battery quicker. Think I will stick to the 65W charger when I get mine, hopefully tomorrow.
@paulsegrue5133 good call! You can also enable battery care mode which will limit the maximum charge level to 80%, further increasing your battery's health
@@k3nsh1n4life Yes I only charge to 80% on my Ally and I also do the the same on my phone.
@@paulsegrue5133 unlikely, Asus will have tech to protect the battery, usually fast chargers slow down when you reach around 80% charge tip preserve the battery. What makes this stand out over a Steam Deck? Quite curious because I want to compare and snag something but I am conflicted.

This is little more than an advertisement. Just look at the comments regarding the Cyberpunk score comparison. A jump from 42.94fps to 44.69fps is apparently 'nice'. A whopping 1.75fps advantage. The ASUS Christmas bonus is going to be a good one this year.
Any news on the appalling RMA processes?
I did have a question about the tests that you ran. On the OG Ally it shows the GPU as 780M. Does that mean you used different AMD drivers on the OG Ally?
Can you test eGPU and the SD card? Since it only has 40gb bandwidth what will be the recomended gpu.
