Here's what some icons have to say about the book!!!
Ice-T: "Respect to Soren Baker for documenting the history of gangster rap in these pages. Some hate it. Some love it. But you can’t deny its brutal, hardcore honesty."
The D.O.C.: "History has so often been written by the victors, that you very rarely ever get the real story behind anything. So it’s really important to hear from the people that were there, which is exactly what Soren Baker shares in this book. He writes about it and he’s honest about it."
Xzibit: "Hip-hop changed the world. Gangster rap changed the narrative, and then changed the world again. Soren Baker has been a very integral part of documenting hip-hop on the West Coast for as long as I can remember. I don’t think anybody is more qualified to write this book."
Leslie “Big Lez” Segar: "Soren Baker has changed the perspective of gangster rap by putting his pen to paper. He has given hip-hop power, proven its potential, and made non-believers contemplate all of its possibilities. The truth in his writing leaves no stone unturned, something he's done again with The History of Gangster Rap. Soren doesn’t just champion hip-hop. He also reveals its flaws and its truths."

In the song 'Starfish and Coffee', Prince becomes the first musician to support and protect a former classmate who happened to have been what we now label as autistic. Truly an artist who was ahead of his time.

The Ballad of Dorothy Parker is my ish.
Some of the songs were going to be on The Camille album.
The album was supposed to be 3 albums, Warner fought him.

Forever in my Life is one of my favorites. I tend to like music that isn’t overplayed….and in addition, that joint was personal for me. He was talking about his love for his woman on an extremely supernatural level if you ask me. And lastly, the stripped down, breakbeat sounding nature reminds me of the kind of hip hop I like. All around genius production. Salute Soren and Kwame.

It was not pushed very hard in Canada.. very hard to find copies here. - I found one copy on wax over the years.. and one tape version... I didn't even see it in stores in 1987 at all - to contrast Around the World album sold extremely well.

In my opinion Prince most controversial song was.more like album interlude break....the song called "Sister".....if you listen to the song .....the song talks about his first sexual experience @ 15 was with his older.sister.....She (alleged) gave him the "Oow Wop" one day alone with her after school ....very disturbing.....

SOTT the TITLE TRACK - It's not 'social commentary', that's a widely accepted view that's based on a recent re-telling re-release and without much real thought and listening, it's become the defacto conclusion. Prince almost reading the news, watching the news and noting it, like going through a newspaper, and, lamenting. It's future funk blues. It's cold, dark leaning, sad, and sounds... lonely. It's introspection and observation.
SOTT the ALBUM - is a darker retelling, of his experience of 'going Hollywood' and making lemonade out of lemons so to speak. He managed to take WB Records execs practically forcing him cut down the original multi record set of 'Crystal Ball' and before that a cancelled 'Dream Factory' which was a more LIGHTHEARTED album, with fun songs poking fun at himself with 'Movie Star'. The title alludes to a sort of skeptic view of Hollywood and used a negative term used to describe Hollywood. But the Revolution based album, sucked. Well, the songs were great, but it just wasn't there and with Wendy and Lisa pushing a more equal collaborative venture, and the politics both personal and band related, including their asking for a raise, when Parade he almost practically disowned. Prince, solo was already building new exciting areas without the Melvoin Revolution. Fired.
Then, and this is the kicker, SOTT alone is NOT a full experience. You need to understand the Black Album which was re-envisioned as Lovesexy. The STUDIOS of which recorded SOTT-BA and THEN Lovesexy, that all has a story, a dark to light story. LOVESEXY marks a new complete direction for him, a new underlying positivity that he did NOT find in Hollywood, MTV, Sunset Sound, his managers, and even certain band members. Prince was ALWAYS self aware and that may come from his childhood illness and the angel that visited him.
This took me about 6 minutes to type but I will say that the 80s, there wasn't any hang ups. The sort of mind OCD that race and orientation politics today, it's so stifling and in many ways, oppressive, individually and socially, if you let it. That's NOT what Prince was, he can't be re-purposed for ideologies of today, which are dictated by online culture and influencers, media, politicians, etc. Prince if anything IS and will always remain a role model for individuality, thinking for oneself, freedom from any and all restrictions, and exploitation, and artistic energy with good old hard work ethic.
