The test drive you did without the cap on the modulator is making it leak as the cap works as a seal. And that will make hard shifts like without the vacum hose on it like you eksperinced. And then you compensated by adjusting the cable for shift point. You have to have the seal cap on. The cable don't adjust harshnes in shift but only shift point. 2 years old video but I thought I'd just comment that
Very nice bro! Very helpfull, the plastic in the end should be placed, so you can turn it clock and anticlockwise, the same degrees....as you probably know...but i saw you move it only in one direction...you place it in neutral position. What u did in the end is altering your settings by 20 or 30 degr, cause the little plastic cogwheels turn the whole core of your presettings.....it is made that way, to set minor adjustments in both directions, without taking off the cap...thanks for great insight! hi, sorry for delay in reply, we just got back last monday. this one had worn motor and low engine vacuum, so needed to go all the way in that direction to try get best trans shift feel. cheers
I had a rough shift on both of my 80's mercedes, diesel and 500. I simply backed off the adjustment screw on the modulator by 1 turn, and it completely fixed the issue. It's so smooth now, it's not even noticable. I was worried for a while about vacuum, mechanical issues, etc, but this wasn't it.
Hello! Thank you so much for an awesome video. I was wondering if you could help point me in the right direction. I have late shifting. So if I just feather the throttle back a little bit when it would shift in its normal rpm's it shifts relatively smoother. If I don't throttle back at that point it is quiet jerky when if finally shifts. I hope l'm making sense. I have the 722.351 in my 1989 300se. I noticed there was a court too much in the transmission. I removed it and now my next theory is that either that court damage the transmission or there is a vacuum situation. Does this make sense? Thanks again
They're a great car, the M110 is almost certainly the best straight 6cyl engine Mercedes ever made. It was used over almost 2 full decades in I think 6 different chassis (it might be 5). It's a beautifully balanced, easy to repair and understand engine. In addition to the modulator it could also be the transmission pressure cable (Boden?) or the vacuum hose from the manifold to the modulator being blocked.
Even though you don’t have to drain the pan, do you have to remove any transmission oil? Will oil pour out of the port after removing the modulator? Sorry for the bother.
This was very insightful! I'm diagnosing a shift flare on my 1991 300E 4matic with the 722.3. Every time it shifts under half throttle or more, the rpms first flare up and then it moves to next gear. The shifts themselves are very smooth. Apparently the one-time-use vacuum cap that goes on top of the T-pin can be adjusted ever so slightly also (as you do at 20:36), so I've rotated it to the other side. However, no change was detected. Thinking of removing the cap and adjusting it at the T-pin. Did your car have any such symptoms?
hi, make sure you check how much vacuum you are actually getting at the modulator. you may have a leaking or blocked hose or ports. also check modulator is holding vacuum. trial and error is usually the best adjustment on the old bangers. cheers
@@YepThatsIt Great news! I turned the T-Pin a full circle and a quarter, and after several bouts of researching, adjusted the bowden cable back and forth several times between drives. The shift flare is pretty much gone! HUGE improvement. I intermittently get a flare at a certain rpm (1900-2100 rpm) ish but most other times, no flair at any other throttle position. Although I'm thrilled with the result, I'm curious what exactly is causing it. Is it engine not developing enough vacuum, vacuum pump failing, or some line leaking?
I've been trying find this information for a while now for my 81 300sd and 91 300te, the wagon was smoking like crazy, disconnected vacuum line and it stopped, big relief. Hello and thanks for the great video. I have a question about my 1991 350SD, I recently lost reverse gear and thought it was the transmission but I couldn't find one and is too expensive to have one rebuild so I decided to change the Vacuum Modulator and to my surprise I got my reverse back, but it doesn't go on reverse until I rev the engine to 2k rpm or depress the pedal about half way, other wise it feels as if it's on neutral, the car moves forward if it's downhill until it engages and then tends to go fast/burns rubber. With my old modulator all the other gears were very smooth, just no reverse, now I sort of have reverse but my other gears are very harsh/jumpy. I tried adjusting the modulator but I can't get it to work correctly. Do you or anybody have any ideas how to adjust the modulator correctly or could it be the Vacuum Control Pump? Any advice would be much appreciated . Thanks
hi, if you have improvement doing that, i`d be checking the vacuum lines arent leaking and/or blocked at an orifice somewhere. depending how worn your motor is, you will just need to adjust by trial and error until you are happy with the shift quality. if you have more questions contact me on our facebook link. cheers

hi, fix all the issues you described and check all the basics including the driveline and rubber mounts. make sure the modulator is not leaking and receiving a good vacuum. make sure you mark and take reference points before you adjust anything, so you can return back to where it was originally. there is an adjustment on the modulator as shown in the video. hope that helps ad thank goodness for google translate. cheers

hi because you didn't use a pressure gauge ... like the manual says.
hi, thanks for your input. cheers
just as reference, how much does this whole service cost?
hi, time, parts, trans fluid and gst for the tax man. cheers
@@YepThatsIt just trying to compare the service prices here in Sweden and US. lets say w124 1995 E200 with 10k on it
I have benz w124 1995 e320
What color type of this modulator valve well used in my car?
And am I can replacement it easily!?
hi, just go with same colour that is in yours. cheers
Hi YeoThatsIT,,. I have a Old W126 (380SE) . ( Most definitely NOT a Car for everyday life ..
What would YOU do to help with this ...
I NEED the car / Gearbox. To HOLD / STAY in 1st Gear ( gear 1 ) & NOT change Gear , Into 2nd Gear. ( Gear 2 )
The car is being used as a stunt car in Australia.. and I need first gear at high revs
hi, they have a switch on tbar console - s & w from memory.... summer and winter, in winter when you manually select low it will take off in 2nd so wheels slip less in snow. you can also wind in adjuster on modulator so holds gears longer and moves up the shift points. cheers
If you drive it without the t piece in it will have a vacuum leak and won't work properly. Don't ask me how I know.
haha i know how you know as i often learn the same way. cheers
@@YepThatsIt So true, very helpful vid btw.
Can't get my eyes off the temp gauge... I busted a few of my engines maxing that out. Sigh...
not good, no worries, cheers
