1989 was the scariest by far, last year without the chicanes the cars were very evolved, incredibly fast (the fastest they have ever been on this track) I really don’t know how they got away with any serious accidents that year, it’s a miracle. This is the peak of Group C racing!
Was there in period, great to have the distinctive sound of the cars, Mazda, Porsche, Jag, Merc. And all before the safety fences went everywhere in the 90s, ruining much of the spectating. Tickets purchased last Nov for this year's race, going over for 12 days to catch scrutineering, test day, practice, qually and the race, can't wait.
And just imagine, these cars are only about 100kg heavier than today's fat pig F1 cars. Man racing in every series across the board was much better in the 80-2000s. All downhill once we hit the 2010s
Pole Position - Mercedes Sauber C9 Fastest Lap - Jaguar XJR 9 LM Where is Peugeot? The fastest race car is the one that will complete the fastest lap, not the one with the fastest straight line speed. Especially if this car even shamefully failed to reach the finish line.
For real, tobacco liveries were some of the best. It's hard to think about racing without brands like Camel (Mansell), Marlboro (Senna, Schumi), Lucky Strike (Villeneuve, Button), or West (Hakkinen) coming to mind. Very effective advertising, still holds strong decades later.
It was a formula that had reasonable costs with some technical freedom. Take your best road engine, tune it and put it in a 2 seater sports car chassis.
I saw the GTP race in Kansas in 89'...Geoff Brabham won that in the Nissan GTP turbo...the Jags were there as well as the Porsche 962...Similar to the sounds of this race but not nearly as cool 😎.
The level of pollution back then compared to today is insane. I wonder if they used leaded gasoline because it was common until end of the 80s. And also if 102 octane already was established? I'm 1988 born and got no clue

The greatest audio recordings of Group C automobiles we as a species possess.

With the use of downforce top speed is less of an issue. Downforce is also a safety device that makes the car easier to drive.
@@lebagnard6018 the cars are setup for less downforce in le mans bc of exactly that, top speed
@@lebagnard6018 I don’t know where you got that idea from.
These BRUTALLY powerful cars going 250mph must have been quite a sight to witness back then
They were amazing ... add in the rumbling Nimrod and the screaming Mazdas, it's a total assault!
It was !
Why ‘BRUTALLY’?
The bit where they reached top speed was inaccessible to spectators anyway.
the race of the century . Never seen again 7 work teams entrants .
We had 9 in 2024.
That was the 80s.
Cheers to greatest Sport in the history of Life. 🏁 🏎️ 🏆
1:23 - you will never convince me that full EV racing in any class would ever compare to that sound....long live the V8s!!!
And the V12 in the Jag !
v12 and rotary said hello
It sounds like modern nascar tbh
The C9 sounded like a nascar
V8!
Biturbo
Yea it has a twin turbo v8
I was there. Great racing.
Pure sound
Last year of the famous straight.
Esses carros do Grupo C eram insanos🏎🔥🔥🔥
THE best start of any motor race I've been at. I was there, at the start and watching this I still get goosebumps.

only 2 models that u can hear exaclty, Sauber C9 and Mazda 787b
love that sounds
In this race they use 767b
787b beat the sauber in 1991. this is 767. came 7th which was pretty good since the car didn't match jaguar, mercedes or porsche

9:14 The Peugeot WM P88. Fastest car in Le Mans history.💪
Tbh it only entered the race with the intention of reaching the 250mph mark.

#52 was a WP489 converted from a P87.
These cars are just so amazing
some of the loudest and best years at Le Mans. But the 90's were great as well with McLaren, and the GT1 cars.
I would like to see the full race
1989 my first le mans in a tent at mulsanne corner. 2024 still there , still mulsanne b en b though. 1989 a beauty
