  • Welcome to the Monroeville Mall located in Monroeville, PA. The mall opened in 1969 with Gimbel’s, JCPenney, Joseph Horne Co, and G.C Murphy as anchors. The mall also had a skating rink, several pond areas and a lava rock waterfall. In 1978 the movie Dawn of the Dead was filmed at the mall. The skating rink closed in the late 80s and was replaced with a brand new food court. In 1986 Gimbel’s closed and became a Kuafmann’s. In 1994 Joseph Horne Company closed and was replaced with Lazarus and in 2005 the store was rebranded into a Macy’s, at the same time Kauffman’s closed and a year later, that store became a Readings. In 2008 the Readings store closed. In 2004 a lifestyle center was added to the mall. The former JCPenney store moved from its previous location into the former Readings store. The old JCPenney store became a Cinemark movie theater. In 2014 the first floor of the JCPenney was closed off and became a Dicks Sporting Goods. As of 2022 the mall is at 95% occupied. Let’s go inside and take a look.

When there's no more room in Hell, the dead will shop at Monroeville Mall.

Glad to hear its 95% occupancy. We did all our school shopping here in the 80s. Always parked outside Penneys. As a Kid, I remember the ice skating rink and skated there twice. They also had some good restaurants there long ago. If you watch the movie Flashdance, you will see the rink and the mall.

Cool. I recently went here. It is doing pretty well for a CBL mall. Publicity is everything

It's reassuring to see the mall is under some sort of control again. It made me sad to hear about the security checkpoints at night to keep the young troublemakers out and all the gang related incidents in recent years. It's crazy to think I'd also go there on my own or with friends as a 16 or 17 year old after I learned to drive, never with any problems, and kids now in the same age range (maybe younger) were causing serious problems there. I don't live in Pittsburgh area anymore, but Monroeville mall is where my parents used to take us when we were younger. My parents would let us ride that little train as seen in the video. I even stopped the escalator full of people once...probably one of the reasons why there are button-covers now on the stop button. Around Christmas time, our school band would go to perform Christmas music for the elderly people during the workday. By early college, I had been using the Greyhound bus terminal as a means of going back and forth to PSU (used to be where the Best Buy was placed). 1999 or 2000 is when the mall converted from the old-style in Dawn of the Dead to its modern incarnation. I watch Zach and Miri every so often to see it as well to virtually visit the place. It's an iconic mall to me to say the least.
