    Great video!! You covered all the bases! One thing...my brother passed away 32 years ago and I STILL HAVE THE PEACE LILY FROM HIS FUNERAL! I love it so much! It's doing really well! I pulled it out if its pot last fall and gave it new dirt. I was so nervous! It seemed to struggle for a month or so, but then took off! Its flowered twice since then! It's just so beautiful! 🌱🍃🌿

    I just received a peace lily after my sons passing 3 weeks ago and I need to make sure to keep it alive. He loved these plants and always laughed at how I could not keep a plant alive. This video was very helpful as I never knew I needed to clean the leaves. Thank you very much. I now know that I need to use distilled water, clean the leaves and fertilize every few weeks. Thanks again..

      I'm so sorry for your loss. Just to be extra sure you have no questions or doubt at all on how best to care for your plant, I'll tell you what I know. Light, just bright shade. They can take some direct sunlight but not for long. The flowers can be used sort of like a light gauge. If you have bright white flowers then your plant is getting the right amount of light. If they are coming up greenish then I would give them a little bit brighter light. If you don't see any at all then I would slowly increase the light again, over time. The leaves can and will burn quick. I have mine sitting in an east facing window so it can get ample morning light and then protection from the sun during the hotter parts of the day. You could do a west or south facing window but I'd scoot it back some, like 2 feet or so. Also a curtain may help too. Water, you got that part right on the nose, the leaves are pretty sensitive and I find distilled water keeps the brown tips and other discolorations away. The leaves will sort of "deflate" when they need more water. The trick is to try and water them before they deflate. But as always there can be too much of a good thing and root rot will occur if you water to liberally. Humidity is very important too, ideally they enjoy around 50%. Now you can go to Lowes or Home Depot and get a temperature and humidity monitor for around 12 bucks and it will tell you both for any given room. I bought a little humidifier for mine, some people freak when they hear that word. If you do buy one get one without a filter, and clean it once a week with distilled white vinegar. You could also use a pebble tray or spray bottle. Feeding was the only thing I'd say to watch out for. They aren't heavy feeders. If you feed them more than once a month, it's way too much. Really if you feed once a month you should dilute it some. Every other month would be better. Their systems can't process a lot of nutrients so if you do feed too much fertilizer salts can build to a toxic level. I hope all this helps and if you do have any questions just let me know!

      Thank you for watching and I'm sorry for your loss. One thing I wish I would have been more clear on in the video is how often you should feed them. These guys aren't heavy feeders. I said at most feed them once a month and at that, you should dilute it. That is ok but still, you should only feed every other month. Their systems aren't used to processing a bunch of nutrients and it will build up to a toxic level in their soil if you feed them often. I received this beautiful Peace Lilly after our beautiful mother's transition (passed). Her Love for plants made me love plants, Out of the plants she received this is one of the plants I'm having a hard time with. I always watched her take care of plants and she was good at it, we always had plants in the house as children. I felt I was taught well until I received this Peace Lilly, After looking at your video I now know to use Distilled water (I was using Tap water from Sink, Warm), Good soil (Miracle Grow), Keep the Dust Off them, Take a Damp cloth and Wipe off leaves with Distilled water, and Lemon, Keep in the shaded area, away from windows. I'm in Pennsylvania, the plant is in my mother's bedroom. I was giving the plant Tap water every week on a Thursday, or Friday, That Is going to Change. I just gave it some distilled water as I write this to you. Your Video showed me a lot. Thank you So Much For this video. I pray I can bring this beautiful plant back to where it was in the beginning, More Beautiful. Again Thank you for your video, Much Needed Information. I am learning. I understand that these days are different from yesterday, And we have to adapt even with plants.

    True story about the light requirement. I put mine out on the deck when I went to go get fertilizer from the store down the street, maybe out there for about 3-4 hours total. Yes, I will always have a peace lily in my home. They're so pretty and simple and helpful. I want a Spathiphyllums 'sensation' those get really large. Bout 6 ft tall with a 6ft spread. Leaves can get up 20 inches long. However I do worry I said to feed too much. Spathiphyllums aren't heavy feeders at all. They can't process nutrients very fast so if you are feeding more than once a month it's way too much. Now I did say if you feed every month you should dilute it down, but feeding every other month or so is better.

I thought and still think its a great plant. Remember a couple years ago when people were putting a Bettas inside a clear vase and then sitting a plant in the top part of the vase and letting the roots just grow in the water? One good plant you could do that with or just grow hydroponically is the peace lily. Don't get me wrong it's wrong to keep a fish in that small amount of water but the plant in the vase of water growning that way still looks cool without a fish. At the other end of the spectrum I totally long to own a sensation peace lily one day, once I have more room. They get up to 6ft tall and have 20 in leaves!

      I have been YouTubing now for exactly a year. I started in September of 2018. This is the nicest comment I have ever gotten. This made my entire week. I am very glad that you enjoy my videos. I now have two jobs and this does take up considerable time and it is just fantastic to see people reacting positively to my work even if it is something more like a hobby. I LOVE coleus. They are very beautiful plants. I am very impressed though it sounds like you had a battle with some powdery mildew and made it. This is one of the hardest things to beat and I can attest to that! However it can be done!! Thank you again. Be sure to catch my next video on orange trees. My fiance and I just bought a house and are in the process of unpacking and getting organised so it has taken a longer that I normally like to post a video. Hopfully ill get it up by the end of this weekend!! Plant Prudently!

    My peace lily (same type as yours) is still going strong four years after I bought it! Although I haven't left it in its original pot, i'v split it up so now I have six of them (soon to be eight as two 'babies' have sprouted from the main plant). All of them happy and growing, although none have flowered since I bought it. I was unaware of tap water not being too good for them so that might be why. Thank you for the lovely and informative video!

      Yes Kentucky is known for a lot of things, beautiful rolling hills, pretty houses with white picket fences, horses, bourbon, basketball and our hard water. Over half of our water supply comes from limestone rocks that usually make the bourbon taste better but it can wreak havoc on our plants. I learned that the hard way a couple years ago and ever since then I've always tried to use distilled or filtered water. The only kind of filter water that removes sediment and chemicals is Zero water and that can be pretty expensive. Meijer and Walmart typically have distilled water on sale for about $0.84 a gallon.

    This has given me great info. My Cousin gave me a large Peace Lily after her Son's funeral. She knows I love plants, but this one seems challenging already. I have to make more changes with the Winter coming. My Hubby moved it from the kitchen to the bay window in the living-room😥It's drooping now. I've seen several tips today so my work is cut out for me to save this beauty...lol

    • @TheGreenAlchemist
      @TheGreenAlchemist  3 года назад

      Well, let me start by saying I'm sorry for your loss. Yes, I know the sentiments that we can place on plants especially if they are attached to the memory of a loved one. Fortunately, mine is doing very well because I got mine from my father's funeral, so if I lost it I would be pretty upset. When it comes to Spathiphyllums they need as bright indirect light that you can provide. Established plants can take some direct sunlight though not for long. The leaves will burn, quickly. I have mine in an east-facing window. This provides it with plenty of morning sunlight and then protects it from the sun during the hottest part of the day. Typically growers will enlist the help of artificial to grow lights. You want about a very bright shade for a good amount of time. Full-spectrum LED grow lights will provide them with the right frequency for the proper duration. There have been some major advancements in the development of grow lights in the last decade. They are no longer expensive to purchase or to run. If you are interested in that check out the link in my description box of any of my newer videos and you can get the ones I use on my orchids and bonsai. This will come in handy too with the onset of winter. Now with water, these guys are average drinkers. During the growing months (and this is subjective) I water mine about 3-4 cups every 5-8 days or so. During the cold months, you should slow it fairly drastically. I typically do the same amount but every 3 or 4 weeks. The plant will tell you when it needs water by drooping its leaves. Ideally, you want to water it before it does that though. When they begin to droop constantly problems can occur. With the soil, you want something rich and that drains well. You never want the plant to sit in standing water. If your pot has a saucer under it drain the excess water away after about 20 minutes. The soil pH is best around 5.8-6.5, slightly acidic. Peace lilys aren't heavy feeders. I only feed mine once every other month. Their systems can't process a bunch of nutrients so if you feed frequently the extra sits in the soil and builds up to toxic levels. Any reputable fertilizer should suffice. I hope this helps and if you have any questions at all just let me know! Plant Prudently!

    I’m so glad I watched this video! I’m new to plants and always thought they just needed water and sunlight! No wonder my other plants died 😫 didn’t realize they needed food! I got two peace Lily’s for Mother’s Day (one big and one medium) and noticed one of the white flowers turned brown so I put them outside a few mins ago (it’s night) so they could get a little rain! I will bring them in first thing in the morning now that I know that they don’t like direct sun. I’ll get them some food tomorrow, I also have a snake plant but I know that they don’t like much water, so I didn’t put that one outside. How often should I give the snake plant food? Will miracle grow work for both?

      That's mostly for brown leaf tips and the occasional brown leaf. If you find that yours has more brown leaves check its location. I had mine what I thought was far enough away from a mostly closed vent. I scooted him further away and I noticed he's not losing too many leaves now. Also consider the windows it's close to. Too much light will cause leaves to brown and with the cold spurt we had recently it could do it too. If it's not that and you do switch to distilled water, then I'd check the humidity. Mine is close to the humidifier and he loves it there.

      One of my favorite easy to care for plants is the zz plant. It's the Zamioculcas zamiifolia. It can live in just about any light situation out there with better results in higher (though not direct) sunlight. It doesn't require much water either. Mine is rather large and he gets 4 cups of water every 14-18 days. Of course when the heat index goes up the water intake level needs to go up too. It's one of the prettiest greens I've seen to date, and there is also a breed out there called raven and it's mature leaves turn black. Orchids are also one of my favorite plants out there too. A phalaenopsis is one of the easiest orchids to raise. They need bright indirect sunlight. Pretty much bright shade. I water mine every 7 to 10 days and sooner during the growing season. Chinese evergreens are supposed to be easy to raise too. Let me know if you have anymore questions too.

    Interesting about the different water types, there's so much to think about that I previously didn't even consider. I just use New Zealand tap water on my peace lily and it seems to be OK - I hope so, because I really don't like having to buy water packaged in plastic. Your peace lily looks beautiful - I am just about to repot mine into a bigger pot that's about the same size as your pot - I wasn't sure if it would be too big, but yours looks perfect and I want mine to grow to the same size as your peace lily. I will try adding 1/4 lemon juice to the water when I next clean the leaves - thanks for the tip :) You fertilise your plants a lot - I guess that would explain why your peace lily is flowering. I really like this video and it’s very helpful. I hope you can tell brands to use or show how to mix. I got a peace lily last month as a sympathy plant. This plant is beautiful. I repotted cause the roots were coming out of the top and it looked like it wanted to break free. I’m confused as to why I’m getting a lot of yellow leaves. It was closer to the patio and desired to move it. It snowed today and I think that cold draft wasn’t nice to it. That is the only natural lite in the dining room, living room and kitchen. Where should I put this plant to get a balance of light and no draft? There isn’t a window in the bathroom. Help!’

    • @TheGreenAlchemist
      @TheGreenAlchemist  4 года назад +2

      Oh wow, you, or your plant rather, picked one of the toughest problems to pin point. Ok, I'll get to it then. Yellow leaves can be caused by a number of different problems. Poor watering habits seems to be one of the top reasons a persons plant's leaves turn yellow. Excessively dry soil can cause the plants leaves to wilt and then turn yellow. On the other hand, poorly draining soil or an inordinate amount (too much) of water can cause the roots to become waterlogged, which causes leaves to also yellow. Be careful though, older leaves, always at the base of the plant will turn yellow naturally so try not to take that as your fault. After improper watering, I would say a nutrient deficiency would be the next reason most growers plants leaves will turn yellow. Remember a peace lily does not require much fertilizer. Improper iron and magnesium levels can cause leaf veins to remain green while the rest of the leaf turns yellow. Inadequate nitrogen will cause leaves to yellow, and then low potassium levels can cause a yellowing of leaf tips. Try to make sure you use a well balanced respected fertilizer with a 20-20-20 NPK. Environmental factors would probably be the next reason for yellowing leaves. The dark green beautiful leaves are susceptible to sunburn, if placed in direct sunlight for long the leaves will turn yellow before falling off the plant. Too much heat, or excessive cold snaps\breezes will cause the leaves to turn yellow too. Make sure if you have it close to a window or door you scoot it back a bit because they are a tropical plant and do NOT tolerate the cold well at all. Transplant shock can be another reason why leaves turn yellow. If you are worried about that let me know and I will tell you how to best combat it. I would also suggest getting a humidifier to help you both out too. Let me know if you have any more questions.

    I have one of the big versions of the Peace Lily. A neighbor gave it to me I guess partly as a gift but also it was a big plant. It was growing wider and I placed it outside. Then the leaves started to welt and I watched you video. So, I think part of it is from too much sun. It's trunk either got wind damage or is malnourished for I haven't fertilized it. I cut all the brown parts and have tied all the trunks together to it isn't just totally slumped to the ground with bent stems. The leaves are still dark green at core and the plant is trying to live but it looks very sad compared to when I first got it. Maybe the plant is 3-5 years old already and near death but I am trying to care for it back to life. I wont let it be outside anymore and I fertilized it and will water it. but it is hard to tell when it needs water for the stems are wind or severly malnourished and already bent and slump over.

I will be moving and it's very cold here can you give me some advice on moving my plant? I don't want it to freeze in the process. Thanks

    • @TheGreenAlchemist
      @TheGreenAlchemist  4 года назад

      Yes! Sounds like yours is just about as important to you as mine is. I got mine when my father passed. Peace lilies do like to be somewhat root bound. Though I would wait until the spring to re-pot it, if you can. If yours is still producing flowers though I would say yours seems to be doing ok, for now. That is one of the best things about peace lilies, they'll tell you when they need water, their leaves will droop drastically. Try and train yourself to keep a look out for that. I've got mine sitting in front of a window close to my room so I have to look at it every day. When the leaves start to droop you need to give it more water, distilled if you can afford to. As far as moving I had to move mine at the end of fall when it was starting to get fairly chilly out. It is a tropical plant and it loves the warmth. If you even have it next to a cold window or a drafty door you could lose it. It will NOT survive a freeze and does not like the cold at all. I put mine in my fiance's car, bc the moving truck didn't have heat. It can survive a quick jog from the car to the new house, but if it is freezing out, I'd wrap him up in two plastic Kroger bags or a blanket or something. Prolonged exposure can stress your plant out, taking weeks + to recover.

    I have one that is about 3 yrs old. I am usually a good gardener and yet I have leave that turn quite dark then dry out. I know not to overwater and I have fertilized it. The ones you pulled out look a bit like what I mean but mine are darker maybe if I left them they would be the same light brown. It is important for me to take care of it as it was given to me when my daughter passed away.

    Just took my moms peace lily that was given to her when her grandma/ my great grand passed away in January. I really want to keep it alive so questions below, also my first real plant... 🙂 Do I need to repot? it’s been in the same pot since she received it or keep it in the original pot? If I do what soil can I use? I think she’s been overwatering or neglecting, so should I clean the leaves (water & lemon juice) I also do have a few brown leaves and one big yellow one, will I just need to prune the leaves?
    Ann’s just wanna say I found it funny how you said that’s all you know but really did a super informative video 😂

    Great video. I'm new to plants. My peace lily is getting brown spots on the white flowers :/ i suppose It's the hard water we have down here in south Texas.

      How's the humidity in your home? Peace lilies like humidity around 50%. I ended up having to purchase a humidifier for mine and he loves it! I know that if the humidty is on the low end, especially out in the Texas sun, it can cause the the blooms to turn brown and not open. But I don't believe that would cause brown spots. Typically hard water causes brown spots or tips in the leaves. If you do suspect that your water is hard I would buy some distilled water for em. Spathiphyllums are very sensitive plants and do not do well with hard/soft water. However fungi can be the cause of brown spots. What I would do is go to Lowe's or Home Depot and purchase some copper fungicide and apply it to the next flower that develops brown spots.

    I've had my peace Lilly 3 yrs now and it's beautiful. Easy to care for and it produces many white flowers but lately some are turning brown? What do you think the problem could be?

    Thanks for the video! I'm trying to save mine also because I got it when my dad died but the leaves begin to brown before they even turn dark green. I don't know if it's gonna make it

    Hi, this is an extensive video. THANK YOU!
    I separated my Peace Lily into three smaller plants. Two are thriving, but one is really struggling. I changed it to a room with more light and watered it, but after two weeks, it is still drooping. Any suggestions?

    I agree your videos are very informative. But I have a question. Should these bumping parts near the base of my plant be covered in soil?

    So can I feed my peace Lilly banana peels? And will I have to use fertilizer if I do use banana peels?
    Your video is helping this new plant parent who is lacking in the green thumb department. But I read or seen somewhere it was better to use banana peels.
