    Thank you for this. My grandfather was a volvo mechanic for 30 years and left me his 93 240. He kept this thing in tip top shape and it only has 180,000 miles. Member of my family watched it for me for 3 years until it got out of probate and I could pick it up, unfortunately they never cleaned the throttle body and while ran smooth, there were some inconsistencies. Used this video to breath life back into her. I'm sure my grandpa would be happy I'm getting some use outta her. Bless

    For anyone who gets stuck on the step at 1:19 in the video where you separate the throttle control rod from the throttle plate lever : The lower third of the control rod assembly is a ball-joint mechanism made of a single piece of tough plastic, with an end cap that snaps closed. It's designed to clasp over the ball on the throttle plate lever. And of course it's not easy to separate the plastic part from the ball -- if that were to happen during normal operation the car would no longer be driveable. So that end cap provides a safety lock. You need to open this end cap with your fingernail or a small screwdriver blade. With a little persuasion it flips down and open. Now the whole plastic part can be pried away from the ball on the throttle plate lever. In the video, indy452 pops it off with his fingers, but in my case I needed to gently pry it off using a small screwdriver as a lever. Maybe that was because it had never been done before. Of course it's a tight fit, since it's designed to never come apart accidentally.
    That was the hardest part of the job for me. And it's not hard in retrospect once you know how the ball-joint mechanism fits together. The rest of the job is time-consuming but not hard.
    When you re-assemble, remember to re-fasten that end cap. It should snap closed with a reassuring click.

    Thanks for this great video .
    I've been tinkering with my 1990 240DL with only 103,000 original miles and hardwiring the taillights. Just a few days ago ,I noticed the throttle body looked terribly dirty . I knew I needed to clean it and then I came across your video. I probably could have figured it out , since I've cleaned throttle bodies before but your video made it easier.
    Thank you so much .
    Please keep the 240 videos coming .

    I just bought an '82 240 wagon for my daily driver, and the throttle body cleaning is very likely going to be my first project. Also, the starting fluid spray test sounds very helpful. Great idea! I will definitely do that!

    Thank you for the video. I just completed this same task on by 89 240 GL after watching this. I forgot to plug the sensor back in took it for a test ride. I thought it was just running shitty like it does after a reset but then the check engine light came on. I felt dumb.

    The reason for throttle body cleaning solution being different
    from Carburetor cleaning solution is it will not damage the special coating applied to the throttle body.

    I’m a proud owner of an ‘86 245.
    It can stall when making a hard right turn. An expert Volvo mechanic suggested I look at :
    “Check the base idle / throttle body is clean and possible sticking IAC “ so finding your video was quite timely. The IAC appears to be the original Bosch part. Perhaps I should just replace it?

  • @grumpy_ken
    @grumpy_ken 8 лет назад +1

    Great video, I have to clean the throttle body and check on the IAC which I can see is exposed after removing it. You're right about Torx 20's being everywhere in the 240. If you're ever fortunate enough to come across one at the junk yard, the original Volvo tool kit included a T20 driver.

    update, all of the sudden, it became very hard to start. (once started, no problem). I soon discovered that I failed to tighten the hose (a from Air Mass sensor to the throttle body) and it came loose. I tightened it and now starts great.

    Hi there - Do you think this would give enough space on a 240 '90 wagon for a nightmare free PCV system replacement? I'm not sure, can't figure it out from the video (and that's OK the video is about something different). Thanks!

    How often do you do the maintenance on the throttle body and how long does that gasket last before getting a new one, I have a 1988 760 Turbo I was wondering if it is the same

    Thanks for the video. Stupid question, how the devil do you get at the top 13mm nut closest to the firewall (next to the TPS)?! My 1/4 drive 13 mil socket and all my 13mm wrenches are too fat to fit on the nut between the TB and TPS. Grrr.

      Peik Olsen I did, but now I cannot remember how! I may have used the open end of the 13mm wrench, not the closed end.. good luck!

    • @peikolsen8550
      @peikolsen8550 9 лет назад +1

      Managed to do it! Went and bought a set of open ended ones:P tried getting more space by unscrewing the sensor- didn't help, so was Shit scared when trying to put it back. Managed successfully though and the car is now running smooth as silk ! :D
      What Lesson learnt? Good Tools do half the work!

    My 240 wagon is at about 400K miles, i don't think that this has ever been done to it, mabey that's why the engine acts like it has a super lumpy cam at idle. lol
