Excellent video. Removing the spark plug wire really helps. I use a long 1/4” extension plus a short wobble extension. It’s works well for me but your approach is more simple.

Thank you so much. Clear instructions. I'll try it.
Maybe I’ll use a long extension with a masking tape stabilized swivel.
I have the very same gold sedan and I also want to keep it forever.
Unfortunately, is has all the electronics challenging my patience, which the 1974 144 didn’t have. But it is far better than the nightmare of “all the bells and whistles”.
    Thanks again.

My sensor wouldn't budge and broke off in the bracket. After a lot effort, I then managed to break the sensor bracket also. To replace the bracket the transmission must be dropped. So I am presently preparing to J.B. Wield/ epoxy a piece of aluminum plate to the top of the bell housing to support broken bracket and sensor. Evidently this is a common issue when removing this sensor. It is advised to soak it in lubricant before attempting removal and only use pliers to wiggle it free.

Well presented and clear. Straight to the point. Also note: the OBD-1 blink code - A6 group 214 is RPM Sensor Interment may help diagnose this problem cause. My car stalled with check engine , then a few minutes later started so the failure was Interment. The OBD-1 Code showed the problem. Thanks again for a great Video.

Just subscribed. Not overly detailed and great video. I bought the cheap rpm/cps sensor, which is falling apart now and is only but about 5 years old. I'm having issues with a no start again and suspecting that the culprit is the exact same sensor again.

yes - not overly detailed, and he did not feel the need to tell stories about his cat, or his mother's favorite stew recipe, or other things some people feel a need to include in their videos. Excellent instructions, not too rushed.

I've been chasing my HOT stall issue for more than a year now on my 91 240 DL. I finally read on a forum today - someone suggesting to take look at the CPS - after everyone else kept talking about the fuel pumps and relay and the whole fuel delivery system - which I've already replaced FULLY with OEM. Then I found this video, thankfully. I just checked the CPS wiring and from the small amount of it that I can see from cursory review it sure looks fried as all hell. So I'm about to take the CPS out and see if I can recondition the wiring temporarily until a new one is ordered and can be installed. I will be back to let you know what gives. Thank you sir!

    @christopherlaskoski189 4 года назад +2

I'm back to report that my temporary reconditioning of the CPS wiring was a success and so far my baby has not stalled out! I am now going back to another problem - that being the car is sluggishly accelerating and does not like climbing hills. I have totally replaced the fuel delivery system - new tank, in tank pump, main pump, fuel filter and also the pressure regulator and hose to that. New coolant temp sensor and thermostat also. New motor mounts and trans mount. I had the cat tested and they said it was fine - but I trust few people in this world so I cannot say that it is fine. If you can think of anything at all to help direct me I would be so grateful. Thank you sir!

Either clean, or replace the Throttle Position Sensor. And be sure to install it correctly (it's on an adjustable slide bracket). After installing, test to see if installed correctly, you'll know it when you hear the CLICK sound when you give a very slight twist to the throttle. The Throttle Position Sensor is the "cure all" for most fuel injection, hesitation, and stalling issues with Volvo

Thanks, excellent video!! I have a 1993 Volvo 240. While driving, the tachometer needle suddenly drops to 0 and the engine stalls. Then I repeat the start and the engine starts as if nothing had happened. I think it could be this sensor because it is as old as the car (640,000km) and the wiring is damaged. What do you think? Thank you, a big hug from Italy

Looks like you have an oil leak which has affected the CPS.
That engine is bad for the enging breather choking up.
It causes excess engine back pressure in the crankcase.
    Which causes oil leaks.
    Tam.

Not the PVC. There's something called a flame arrestor that clogs. It's a little plastic strainer. That is down underneath the intake manifold, and must be pulled up and out along with a plastic gizmo that holds it at the end of a 3/4"? rubber hose. It's a real trick to get the hose back on, but it is possible to do without expert help. Just be prepared to get greasy.

The starter noise sounds like the sprag clutch is not retracting the starter gear quickly enough and the starter is being spun up while the gear disengages. Could be a weak sprag or the ignition switch isn't flipping from start to run quickly enough. If the key switch is working normally I would check the starter.

That starter sure don't sound right. That's another job where there ain't much space to get to the top bolt. I was able to get it from the top with a long breaker bar on my 940 but only because the hood can be put straight up. Your 240 looks to nice for this but some people drill a hole through the firewall to get better access to that top starter bolt.

ohhhhh...about 4 years ago i ran into a similar problem. the ground signal (brown and blue wire coming from the computer to the relay) was not working, so i had just wired it to the chassis to keep the relay closed when the ignition is turned on. now im starting to realize that what id done is bypassed the cps. id always suspected the computer, but the cps tells the computer to send that signal only when the flywheel is turning, instead of when the key is on. tell you what though, it makes for quick starting. lol.

I am trying to figure out what is going on with my Volvo. I have replaced the in line fuel pump and the fuel pump relay (I wasn’t hearing them turn on). The car never stalls but it will not start intermittently and it’s driving me crazy. I hate shotgunning my problem but I think I’m gonna go for this is the next step. Sometimes I still don’t hear the fuel pump relay turn on when it decides not to start even after replacing it twice ( incase the first was defective). Any ideas?!? I’m torn between the ignition switch and the crankshaft position sensor.
