I used this lens for all of basketball season last year on an A7iv and it was an absolute beast. I only switched to my sigma 28-70 when I wanted wide shots and some pregame stuff. This lens rules.
It’s why I’ll be buying it. Finally, a lens that can reach half court. I’ll have to see how much I miss the 24mm. For my first shoots, I’ll take my 24 prime.
such a good lens imo I been using it for videography and photos since march and its been great overall. football, soccer, baseball, volleyball, weddings, and portraits at the 2.0 its the perfect lens I just need a wide lens and ill be good for quite a while. the heaviness does not bother me at all either. the focus is quick aswell.
Tamron released new firmware on October 26 that is supposed to help make AF even better. I’m curious now if I should keep the 35-150 in addition to the 70-200 gm ii running on an a7siii that I’ve got on order 🤔
Great video as always!! I noticed that soon in Europe is coming out the Tamron 70-180 2.8 G2 for just 1200-1300€... do you think it would be even better than the 35-150 f2.2.8? I need it just for basketball videos/photography, and I already have the 28-75mm.
I was looking to purchasing this lens 2nd hand just cause I need something where I came film good quality from one baseline to the next with decent quality if i need to punch in. Was looking at this and the 70-180 Tamron
Brilliant! I never thought of using this lens on a crop sensor (I have a Sony a 6400) for shooting sports that require more telephoto range but I am certainly going to try shooting football games with this lens on my crop sensor camera. Or I suppose I could just put the a7 iii in crop sensor mode and get the same results?
Yes crop sensor move for video on the a7iii would more or less give you the sage effect as using a crop sensor camera like the a6400. Definitely give it a try!
@@petersarellas After pondering this question and a little research, I realized the results are not quite the same. Crop Sensor Sony's apply an additional 1.2 times crop when shooting 1080P at 120 frames per second, which I insist on for action sports videography. The full frame camera in crop sensor mode does not apply the additional crop factor.
This is one of the best reviews I have seen in a while on YT. Everything made sense even though I don't own any pro photography gear of any kind. But the reason to watch is, Yes I am thinking of investing in one. I love to shoot run-and-gun-style videos on my iPhone. Which I always get praised by family and friends for not missing very important moments. I love filming concerts, theaters or festivals but I wanna know something additional to your review… I am a petite girl and always worried about the gear weight. What camera drop-securing skins, or straps do you recommend with this setup? I am interested to know about the audio mic and the supportive tool you were using on your arms to support and balance the weight.❔ Other than that, have you filmed any concerts or low-light situations with this setup?
I've seen other videographers explain how cranking up the shutter speed builds intensity. Do you strictly stick with the 180º rule or are you also changing shutter speeds occassionally?
I’m curious of how footage looks when using a fluid head tripod at 150mm 24 4k crop following a person. Will it be shaky, since there is no image stabilization
I’ve been filming basketball lately and have been using ur lut pack in final cut pro and i don’t know if i should use s-cinitone or s-log because when i put the lut pack it’s still a little gray
I recommend using Slog for the log ones and HLG3 for the flat ones. If you’re still having issues shoot me an email with screenshots to info@petersarellas.com and I can help get you sorted
Awesome video. I was debating between the samyang 35-150 vs the tamron 35-150. I noticed that the samyang has a parfocal focus that might be a bit better for video. Do you have any input on these two lens by any chance?
Peter how’s the image quality handheld at 150mm without stabilization on this lens? Also… would you still say it’s fine for pro basketball games like filming NBA games or you would rather recommend the Tamron 28-75 G2 & 70-200 f2.8 GM II combo? (Even tho is more pricey.
Subjective opinion but with the active stabilization on modern Sony mirrorless cameras nowadays and the quality of this lens I’d say that it is fully capable of filming at a professional level and replacing that two lens combo
Would you choose a wide prime like the Sony 24mm f1.4 GM for grappling sports like jiu-jitsu? I can get fairly close to the athletes with my RS3 Pro. it lets me get nice and low to the mats and follow the action very nicely. I just got an FX3 so I was thinking the 24mm GM would be dope for cranking shutter a bit and shooting 60 and 120 fps. What are you thoughts Mr. Sarellas? before trying to go professional I shot with the Sony ZV-E10 and the Sigma 16mm f1.4 on the Crane M3. so I've done a bit of an upgrading. I'll have to send you something to react to one day.
A wide angle lens like that on a gimbal would definitely be a cool perspective if you're able to get close enough! I'll use the Sony 20mm f1.8 on a gimbal from time to time when I know I can get close enough and am always pretty happy with it, so I'd say give it a shot and see how it goes for you!
I have the Sony ev e10 and I wanted ti get either the tampon 70-180 2.8 or the Sony 70-200 f2.8 for basketball and football which one should I get, I only have enough for 1
I mostly do football, college and high school. so night and day. I use my bmpcc6k pro for all my narrative stuff, but for sports I want to use my fx30. I am stuck between the 70-200 2.8 ii, the 70-200 4.0 ii, the Tampon 2-2.8 35-150, and then something like the 100-400 or something really telephoto. I really dont know what to choose.
With an fx30 the Tamron 35-150 will be more versatile. Easy to grab wider shots near the goal line and with clear image zoom at 60fps or the 120fps crop, you get crazy reach. I use the 35-150 with my fx30 and it’s awesome. The 70-200 GM II will give better autofocus performance and added stabilization
Nice! What specific models (lens and adapter) would be needed to get the 20-447 for the Sony FX30? After looking up B4 lenses, I'm confused with the different terms and what exactly I would need to achieve this
Great review! I can't figure out how you are shooting 4k/120 without any camera or lens stabilization? Without being able to stabilize in catalyst browse I cant seem to get similiar results with the fx30.
I do still have standard stabilization in the camera (just can't use active), though you'd be surprised how far a third point of contact like a camera strap around the neck and a steady set of hands will take you.
They’re different cameras with different sensor sizes so it would depend on your settings and results wouldn’t necessarily be 1-to-1 but you could achieve similar results with both using the cropped 4k60 on A7iv and crop sensor of the fx30.
my apologies I meant how much memory do you usually fill up during the shoots? If you're shooting 10-bit log sometimes 4k120fps I imagine each game maybe upwords of 100GB of storage?@@petersarellas
@@Thecrypt0corner haha that’s a funny misunderstanding. Yeah around 100-150GB total for a football game, maybe 75-100GB for a basketball game. That’s shooting XAVC-S mostly 4k60 with some 4k120 on 1-2 camera bodies for basketball and 2-3 for football.
I’m sure that lens works great with the FX30 but it isn’t a lens I own right now so likely no video coming on that in the near future unless there’s significant demand

For real! This thing is a beast. Barely take it off my camera anymore.
Very credible review. Love the fact you added the BTS and actual footage together. Looking forward to more videos from your channel.
Thank you!! Definitely more coming
Dude, your video editing, music, slow motion, etc. is awesome.
Appreciate the love!

Yeah definitely bring that wide lens along just in case. Being able to film across the court was so nice though!
Got this lens about a month ago. Worth every penny.
Right?! I’ve been loving it
Lol I recognize people in this video because I'm friends with them! 😂 great video this was a great demo for it! Might pick it up💪🏿💪🏿👀💯💯

I haven’t heard any details about that new lens but I’ll listen for word of it over here and look into it when the time is right
Do you have a video on how you follow action. Like how to do you follow the ball in the air. I’m struggling with that.
I was looking to purchasing this lens 2nd hand just cause I need something where I came film good quality from one baseline to the next with decent quality if i need to punch in. Was looking at this and the 70-180 Tamron
This lens and the Tamron 70-180 are definitely both very popular options worth considering!
Another fantastic video!! Thank you so much!!!
You’re welcome!
Thank you for watching!
Considering this lens hasn’t got any built-in stabilisation, what is it like when used at 1:50 mm?
Using it with the FX3 with stabilization turned on in camera I haven’t had any issues even at 150mm

I had it and loved it, but I noticed a huge drop not having the stabilization of a 70-200 g master
Hmm hasn’t been a huge issue so far for me but I could definitely see that, especially depending on your in-camera stabilization
I just got this lens, does the lens loosen up overtime? I noticed it's pretty tight when trying to zoom in and out
It’ll loosen up a bit but it’s still on the stiffer side
