@@petersarellas what are your memory recall settings for the FX30? Or do you mostly just shoot in 120fps and adapt to whatever speed you want in post? I am currently using the MR settings to change FPS and SS quickly since the FX30 doesn't have shutter angle.
You’re welcome! A lot of what I make with this type of footage gets posted on the CFL’s social channels and RUclips page so I’d look there, and I have some of my work up on www.petersarellas.com if you want to look at my portfolio
Love it Peter! Really enjoying the storytelling aspect of games you're capturing, thank you for the insight into your work flow. Are you thinking about upgrading your 70-200 f4 to the mk ii?
@@petersarellas amazing! I'm looking forward to you making a video on that already haha. I'm looking to add a 70-200 to my kit for sports and I'm not sure what the best option is between both F4s and the F2.8 mk ii vs the price/future proofing. Any recommendations?
In slog3 on the A7Siii I believe the low base ISO is 640 and the high base ISO is 12800 in slog3 specifically. This doesn’t mean that those are the only two ISO values that you can film at because plenty of other lower ISO values will still look very clean and give you pleasing images, but it does mean that you *technically* get the least noise and most dynamic range at those two ISO values.
curious as to what made you shoot at 1/400th of a speed instead of the 2x rule? (so if you were shooting 120fps then your shutter would be 1/240 etc) loved the video and content, I learned a lot from this
Another great video Peter! Quick question regarding the shutter speed - Why not follow the 180 rule? Or do you not have the option for ND filters since you have to run around so much?
I do have the option of ND filters and do use them but I like keeping a faster shutter because having less motion blur makes the action of sports look more intense in my opinion
Manfrotto is the brand that I usually go with. Benro is a good one as well. I’ve tried some smaller and more cost effective options in the past to see the difference and those cheaper ones generally don’t last for more than a few months.
Great video Peter! I realized I may have caught you at a bad time on Ig because it was late, but I was wondering if you are able to import your lut pack into your fx3? I tried and it wouldn’t let me.
Haven’t tested that out bc I usually shoot with a standard rec709 LUT and leave any creative decisions regarding colour to post production but let me test that and get back to you!
Thank you so much for videos like this! I've been doing sports media for years but I've always done it for my job so I had their equipment. Now that I'm doing it on my own I picked up the Sony ZV-E10 to get a decent start (recommended by Beyond The Game) and I've been loving it for basketball but now that I'm doing football for the first time on my own I knew I needed a telephoto lens and I picked up the Sony E 55-210mm F4.5-6.3 lens until my preferred options are back in stock. (Sorry longer comment) but my question is do you have any tips for a dealing with a lens like mine? Like should I avoid auto camera settings? I do have lens filters just not sure of how my camera will work best for outdoor sport settings. Thanks in advance.
I'd definitely try to film using manual ISO, WB and aperture rather than relying on auto settings for the most part (AF being the exception). With a lens like the 55-210mm that has a variable aperture I'd also recommend stopping it down to a consistent f6.3 if you have the light available to do so, so that you don't get changes in exposure as you zoom your lens in and out.
Question are you using a filter on these shots? I shoot D1 football and if I bump my ISO up to 12800 during the day or evening the shot would be washed out
I’ve got this camera rain cover that’s essentially a bag with a zipper at the bottom to get the camera in, two holes on the sides to stick your hand through and one hole in front for the front element of the lens, so I’ll use that if the rain gets really bad. Besides that if everything is rated to be weather sealed I’ll just film and let it get wet, then be very thorough with drying it right after the game.
So 4k120 180’ rule puts your at 240. I see your clip at 320, at 400- do you just crank it up more than the 180 degree rule blindly or is there a rule you follow when adjusting shutter?
I’ve used it on C-Log footage before and it works but you have to make a couple of tweaks to get it there (most notably reducing contrast in my experience)
For American football you could probably use either but for Canadian football I use the 70-200mm for the most part because the field is wider and the end ones are twice as deep so the extra reach helps
This dude dropping real gems 🤞 You ever get overwhelmed switching between 3 cameras in real time?
This is super helpful. Appreciate all the work it takes for you to churn these out for us!
Thank you! I’m so glad this helps you and very much appreciate you recognizing the work haha

Yes I definitely am thinking of getting that upgrade! At the very least I want to get my hands on it and compare the two.

On some of them I’m using a Tiffen Pro Mist 1/4 and/or Tiffen VND

No hard and fast rule but I like to hang somewhere around 1/320-1/500 when filming in 120fps

“Sports Games” sounds odd. “Sporting Events” or “Athletic Events” sounds more natural…
