    I think the word you might be looking for for Sally Rooneys books is that they're quite mundane? Like there's no spectacle about them you can point to like you'd normally expect to find in such a beloved book

    I’m very much a one-and-done reader: if I hate the first book I read by an author, I’m out. But then, there’s Andy Weir: I loved The Martian, then hated Artemis, but decided to give him another shot with Project Hail Mary… which became a favorite of all time! So I sometimes wonder if I should give an author a second chance. I admire you for doing it!

    The two authors that I have given a second chance sometime recently are Roshani Chonski and Naomi Novak. I read both The Gilded Wolves and A Deadly Education. The first I disliked because I thought the book overall lacked development across the board and it went from enjoyment and excited to read about these characters who had excellent introductions to being constantly annoyed because nothing was fleshed out or developed enough for me to enjoy it. That being said I loved her writing style, and as I said it had a good setup and her strength was partly in the setting. So I knew that I probably love something by her, I just had to wait and see. With The Last Tale of the Flower Bride I gathered that it would be this one. Not only that, the story and the genre I felt like would suit her writing style and story-telling (at least better than a heist story would), and I gave it either 4.5 stars or 5 stars. I loved it and I fell into the tale. With Naomi Novak I read A Deadly Education. I hated everything. From the writing to the random and continuous monster attacks to the point that it came off as ridiculous than anything else. Which is a shame because it had a decent discussion on privilege and I didn't mind the world building. I also liked following the main character. But a lot of people who highly disliked that book like me enjoyed her other works a lot more, and the premise and type of story that they were struck me as different enough to give them a try. I am currently reading Spinning Silver and it is much better. I even prefer the way it is written and all the different stories that are being told. That being said I don't love the direction it is going in, so we'll see how I feel later on.

    Olivie Blake is a great writer on a word/sentence level, and the vibes, but none of the books I've read by her have gotten higher than a 3 stars bc she often makes things too convoluted, or drags things out sooo much (*cough* "One For My Enemy" *cough*) "Masters Of Death" was so good in the first half and then it just kept "yes, and"ing to a point if feeling ridiculous and it felt like 90% of the book ended up being dialogue. i think i also gave it 3 or 3.5 stars. honestly, i think the best way to describe it is that her writing and stories feel very experimental and that makes them very unique, but that means half of it lands and half of it doesn't so i always leave the books feeling like "yeah that was fine"

    • @jessethereader
      @jessethereader  7 месяцев назад +5

      @jessethereader in my experience, going into her books knowing im going to have mixed feelings in the end but still find interesting and entertaining things in them actually makes reading them pretty enjoyable! because I'm really interested in what she's doing and the uniqueness of her writing so if i go in knowing "this will probably be a solid 3 star read" then i find myself not being disappointed when it's not a 5 star. but who knows! she has a ton of talent, maybe someday that 5 star will happen for me!

    Your library book sale is insane! It's huge! Ours is done in the library in a smaller space and on the last day you can buy a bag for $3 and additional ones for $1 and fill those up. I've gotten some great hauls before! Also, I felt the same way with Stardew Valley. I wasn't sure if I would like the art and I was afraid it would be too much like Minecraft, which I don't love. But I bought it recently and I'm addicted! It can be frustrating at times but it's still so much fun! I hope you continue to enjoy it! Yeah, I'm autistic and I am vary prone to what ifs and constantly wishing I was a normal person and could have the things that most normal people seem to get to experience in life. It really robs me of living my life and enjoying what I have and can do when I 'm constantly focused on the things that I don't have and don't seem to be a possibility for me. For some reason people who don't have that experience of missing out on things and ruminating on that lose don't really get the book or they think its not a real issue.

    So glad to see you watching Star Wars, but why did you struggle with it for so long? It has the same tropes and beats that you would find in most YA dystopian novels. Also, don’t be alarmed, but there are tons of Star Wars novels & comics that tie into the movies and even TV shows, and just an FYI, if you see any Star Wars novels or comics with the label, “Legends” on the cover, this means the story is not officially canon with the current Star Wars timeline of movies and shows, but it was once part of an old canon prior to Disney buying Lucasfilm.

    I'm so glad you're watching Star Wars! It's one of my favourite things. You need to pick an order to watch them - my favourite is 4,5,2,3,6,7,8,9. We just pretend 1 doesn't exist...

      Haha! I'm honestly just going off what my bestie thinks is the best order. Though... she goes back and forth on what the best order is. LOL.
