Funny, I don't like bats but I've been one year in Austin and I didn't even realized they were here until I paid to go see them. Never heard of anyone having a problem with them. Regarding traffic, well I'm in Downtown and I think I use my car maybe once a week. You don't need a car if you live in Downtown which is awesome because it has miles and miles of trails and parks right next to the city. The college kids... I don't even see them unless I go to 6th Avenue. The city feels vibrant, progressive, healthy, with tons of dogs and families and I just love it. Oh and I'm a transplant and I've never felt rejected. People are way more friendly here than in L.A., Miami, NYC, etc. I don't disagree with the video at all, I'm just saying that from my perspective, Austin is awesome!! =)

One thing that I'm surprised that you didn't mention in your video is that the homeless population in Austin, particularly in downtown, is getting really out of hand. Houston's hot and very humid. Austin is also hot and humid in the summer! AC is a must...and if you think you don't need it in you car/truck/SUV...think again! If you live any further than 5 miles from work...be prepared to sit in traffic....and when it's over 100° outside...the heat radiating up from the road can add another 10-20 degrees...and without AC... you're going to be dripping in sweat after your 1 hour commute to your apartment or house that's only 15 miles from work. Trust me...my wife and I live 17 miles from her work...we leave @ 6:20am to get to her workplace by 7:30 am. The drive home at 4 pm...allow an hour to an hour and a half to get home. The traffic here is ridiculously bad!
Now he did make a mistake. Austin does have a light rail system. But it mainly goes from Leander ( a suburb 25 miles north ) to Downtown Austin. So...if you live in Cedar Park, Leander or North Austin
..you can use the rail system. But...it takes as long to go from downtown to Leander...over an hour! And it's kind of pricey considering the time you spend on the train.
Otherwise...I love Austin and the Hill Country...it is really beautiful here.

Briggs... I just moved away from Austin after having lived there for thirteen years. I agree with every one of your “reasons” EXCEPT... bats! Residents of Austin (myself included, at one time) love our bats. We fought hard to keep (save) them when city officials wanted to eradicate them. A UT professor lobbied and educated the public about the benefits of preserving our MFT bat colony. They generally do not bother people or bite - even when you’re standing right next to the Congress Street Bridge when they emerge en masse in the evening. Anyway, just thought you should know that most Austinites feel this way about the bats. Interesting point about them... they are all female. The males stay in Mexico when the females migrate north for the winter. The CSB colony has gotten so large in recent years that a group of about half a million has separated from the main colony and moved to the large underpass on I-35 near Round Rock.

@Vickie, I envy you for having moved out of Austin. I am only going on my second year here and I hate this place. I was expecting down home Texans and not Left Coast-Right Coast liberal snobs and people trying to kill me on the road. And no there is no bicycle culture here, boy that is the biggest lie of all about Austin. When you tell me you have a bicycle culture I am thinking Philly and Seattle, Austin is nothing like Philly or Seattle bicycle culture, not even close....not even close, unless you literally live downtown then you are good. in Philly, bicycle culture is EVERYWHERE regardless of downtown or not. People ride their bikes to work in the snow, thats how much of a bicycle culture it is. Here the weather is gorgeous and I can't even get 10 people together to ride their bikes to work.

Also: the majority of people living in Austin are now transplants. And lastly, I disagree about the bats. In fact, the Bat Festival is big around here. I’ve traveled many places and the drivers in Austin are some of the most aggressive I have ever experienced. I lived in the city for a decade and it’s something you never totally get used to either. You learn quickly not to use your turn signals. That’s just an invitation for someone to block your lane change for miles or camp out in your blind spots.

WTF with the bats? I love them! I used to live in China, and one of the things I miss the most is sitting on my balcony as the sun sets, drinking a beer and watching the bats flutter around. So I was so excited when I moved to Austin and went to the park, lay on a towel and saw the bats fluttering overhead. I do it regularly. It’s fantastic! And I’m not a goth. Also, I’ve lived in different US states and countries and the Austinites here have been nothing but very welcoming when they find out that I’m not from here. Finally, I’m lucky. I only need to use my AC maybe 4 months of the year, and then only during the day. I found an apartment in Hyde Park that has 20 foot ceilings, and ceiling fans. The heat rises and with the fans on, I don’t feel hot at all. I never sleep with it on, even in the hottest months. So I moved to Central Texas, and to my surprise, I rarely turn on my air conditioning. My electricity bill is lower than any other city that I’ve ever lived in in the USA. Oh, and my rent is only $950 a month for a 1 bedroom. I obviously didn’t pay that when I lived in Miami, Los Angeles, and New York City. What you forgot to mention is the ALLERGIES. Cedar season is murder.
