- 10 Things Texas is Known/Famous For.
What are the states Known for? When people think about a state what is the first thing that comes to mind? Is it an event? A location? An activity? or a person? We all have preconceived ideas, vibes, and experiences in different places.
I asked a simple question on Facebook, and the community tab on RUclips, and I did a Google survey where I asked what is Texas known for? There were about 25 things that kept popping up more than any.
In today's list, I have the top 10 that I did a little deep dive into. I will also list some of the ones that didn’t make the top 10 towards the end of the video.
And that is what we are looking at today. Texas

The Alamo went down in 1836 not 1936. That was a mistake not me adding anything.
Hey Briggs, can you please do more on Texas, specifically its dating culture, lifestyle and its best regions for expats.
What Texas and Florida known for on my mind: DANGERous Wildlife💯 Beware of Serpents, Sharks and Gators‼️ Y'All been warned Folks 👀

OUR FLAG. Why is this true? We are the only state that CAN fly their flag equal height to the USA flag. Check it out….
In 1958, an engineer at Texas Instruments invented one of the top 10 greatest inventions of all time as far as its impact on mankind. It was the fully integrated circuit, allowing computers to be smaller than whole rooms and allowed for the worldwide internet with PCs. Then Jack Kilby and two other TI engineers invented the handheld calculator in 1967. Don Wetzel invented the Automated Teller Machine in Irving in 1969. Ross Perot, in Dallas, conceived of the idea of the computer services industry in 1962. In 1969, Collins Radio engineers designed and created the telecom equipment for the 1969 moon launch for NASA. They had previously tested for NASA on of the very first satellites, Echo #1, in 1960.
My dad worked for TI from the 60s to the 80s. He authored two patents while working there. They used to send him all over the world back before many people worked on computers. He did some work for NASA and met Werner Von Braun during this time. Actually he met a number of old Nazis during that time. And I'm a 6th generation Texan.
As a Texan, just swooping in to say that almost none of the stock footage in the bbq section featured bbq, much less Texas bbq, just so unknowing folks don't realize.
Proud to be native born and retired back home to Texas.
As someone who just moved here from NY, I gotta say everyone is real nice and polite.
Also I love the freedom I have down here. Waiting on my first suppressor
Better respect it charlie
Just moved to College Station, Texas a month ago as a foreign student to attend Texas A&M university. I am loving this place, since day 1 everyone helped out in getting settled and making new friends! I also love the Texas BBQ, Whataburger also, its conservative culture and American Football, Gig’em Aggies💪🏻
Welcome ya’ll!
I am a native Texan, and you did a very, very, good job. Another thing for your readers is most Texans will tell you, Texas is divided into 5 states within Texas. East Texas, West Texas, South Texas, Austin, and the Metroplex. Every Texan can identify, with those 5 areas. I know I am going to hear from the Panhandle, but that area is less populated. Thanks Briggs. Keep it up. We enjoy watching your channel.
I think of my son getting a Bone Marrow Transplant at Texas Children's Hospital in 1985 for "Bubble Boy" disease.

“Texas” comes from “Tejas” - the local “Indian” word for friendship.
The other thing the Texian army cried at San Jacinto was “Remember Goliad” - the site of a massacre of Texians (as we were called back then) by the Mexican army.
Highly recommend a visit to the San Jacinto monument.
The etymology of "texas" has recently been disputed. Scholars could not find the native language that supposedly gave rise to the word. One new theory is that the word refers to a tree that sheds its bark.
Texas kinda similar with Florida in terms of political climate these days. You know both States are Leaning on Republican Values and anti LGBTQIA 👀
No it doesn't come from "Tejas" it comes from "Tegas" by the caddo Indians then spaniards made it into Tejas.

I grew up in south Texas near Corpus Christi. NOt a native Texan, but when you are there from elementary through high school, it shapes a person. The people around there were some of the nicest, most generous people I’ve ever come across. Please do a video on Kentucky…I moved to KY in 2021 and absolutley love it. I went on vacation and the feeling of coming home at the end was very real. TBH I think I kinda got homesick…KY has taken me in with open arms and if I never leave, I’ll be happy. Of course, we all know what the #1 for that video would be…the derby, duh!
I thought it would've been their fried chicken recipes.
San antonio is an awesome place for visitors. 1 time there at an air force base, I was in the army. Time off with my wife and officers next door, we flew there fr ft. Polk, stayed at an air force base and visited wires cousin in real estate, Alamo, riverwalk, food, people. Revisited a few years ago, beautiful, better than dfw, although they are 2nd on my list.
Thank you for your service! SA tries to live up to our nickname of Military USA.
Here's a fun one for y'all:
The Yellow Rose of Texas was a real woman.
She was also a Hispanic 'lady of the evening ' that the songs writer was obsessed with.
I remember singing this in Elementary School back in the 70s and it still gives me a good laugh.
Yellow was a term for a light skinned black person. I've always been told she was African American.
I moved to DFW at the beginning of 2019, and am enjoying it. Some of the things:
* DFW is the headquarters and hubs for both Southwest and American Airlines. Houston is the hub for United Airlines. Good travel opportunities.
* 1:40 Texas is friendly.... until you start driving on the freeways.
* The frontage roads that runs alongside the freeways.
* 6:57 There is a museum dedicated to the assassination, and the theater is still in operation. However, the Parkland hospital where Kennedy was treated no longer exists, although a memorial will be constructed at that room location.
* What, no mention of the show "Dallas"?
* No Texas Instruments?
* Football is the state religion here.
Welcome Mark!
You conservative? LOLOLOL
LOL yeah we got friendly people but horrible drivers. I thank God I have the patience of a saint. I love my mom but she's always getting angry with bad drivers here and it's not speed demons, it's like people's IQ goes down the drain when they drive here.
love Texas and the people here are very friendly. thanks for sharing some positives about Texas. i know you dont like the heat so was surprised that wasnt mentioned but yea as they say God Bless Texas
The Alamo was in 1836, NOT 1936. Otherwise great video as always ☺️
Oops!
Thanks for pointing it out. This idiot doesn't know shit just like the rest of people that try to speak on the State.
Texas chili has spoiled me, I can't eat any other chili without thinking" This is good but not Texas good"
This is a nice way of getting familiar with a place
Another great video, Briggs!
My home! There's so much things to see and amazing places to eat that is seems like it's never ending. I love making videos on the places to see in Texas.
As a Texan myself, I would add Whataburger and Pantera on this video.

"The almo has no basement"!
You forgot two icons in Country music in Texas. Bob Wills and George Straight. Yes Texans are some of the most friendly, not to mention polite people on the planet. That being said they don’t take one bit of crap off anyone. 👍
Best country in the States! Texas has the best state pride out of everyone. I couldn't imagine my kids being born in any other state. We have everything you could ever need here. Wonderful native people, family values, the best food, all 4 climates, a fantastic state to do business in, the best football on all levels of play...God blessed Texas! 🙌
Texas kinda similar with Florida in terms of political climate these days. Both States are Leaning on Republican Values and you know against LGBTQIA 👀
And in the state of Texas you can have all four climates in one day! And that's usually around late January & February.
@@bcgreen7479 We really need to open a theme book for that.
I'm a 9th generation Texan and a 10th generation Texan on the otherside. One side of my family is from east and Southeast Texas and the other side is from the Rio grande Valley.
Damn right it is.
I know how to get to Texas. South until you smell it. West until you step in it.
Good morning Briggs!!! Have a nice day!!! 🇺🇸🪖👮♂️
Dang you are really cranking the videos out. I can barely keep up!
I stayed at my granduncle's farm outside Ft. Worth when I was little. I remember it was hot and dusty. As for Texans, they seem to either be the nicest, kindest people you'd ever want to meet other completely obnoxious types. Very polarized. My experience.
I am from Sweden and I can confirm that Texas is likely the most famous state here, maybe next to California, Hawaii and Florida.
Sweden 🤧🤧🤧
Great video! I own a restaurant and our main supplier is Sysco. They are headquartered in Houston, TX. So anytime there is a huge error with Sysco we always say, "There is a problem Houston".
There’s more bigotry in Martha’s Vineyard than all of Texas!!!
Good list. I love calling Texas HOME!!!
"Texas is a blend of valor and Swagger."

Born and raised in Texas.
Just moved out of Texas to Washington and couldn’t be happier.
I love my state but it was time to go. I’ll definitely miss the veteran’s benefits i get there.
It’s just too crowded. Too hot. Super boring landscape (no cool mountains, no skiing, hardly any fun outdoor activities)
Where'd you leave from?
I took my kids to the Witte Museum in San Antonio and learned that the first mascot of the University of Texas was a Bulldog before the Longhorn.
I actually had your channels mixed up. I was sitting here waiting for the Deep Dive. 😁
I will be looking for the 10 things Wyoming and Maine are known for. Gonna guess Lobster and light houses for Maine.
You should do a video about "10 things California is known for". I'm sure it can be nice to know.
Well, one of them would be too many illegals from beyond the southern border. And not the nice ones, either!
I prefer using mesquite for barbecue. Pecan wood smoke imparts a great flavor to chicken.
I moved to Austin 8 years ago. The original Texans are nice. I couldn't believe how nice. I loved living here, but then the Californians and East Cost people came and here comes the rudeness. The Austin weirdness has gone.... I miss it.
Austin will always be WEIRD. Looking like the slums these days,
lmao, people that live in Austin are just people that wish they were Texan
I agree. Im from Houston. Loved visiting Austin. Now, for the first time I prefer vising San Antonio. I dont recognize today's Austin. Far too expensive and the creatives are leaving. Its quite sad😔. Bring back Weird Austin!!
Damn I just moved to Austin from New Jersey lol
Dude your soo right. I remember a few years ago opening the door for a lady in liberty hill tx and she didn't even nod or give any expression of gratitude. I thought that's so unlike texas women. It's like she didn't know why I was opening the door for her. I guess she was from a rude state. I know my Texas women when I see one and I know which ain't.
Here in TX, I've always heard it pronounced San JAcento.
I'll be looking forward to upcoming videos on 10 Things Oregon and Idaho are known for respectively should they materialize soon.
He has a video on 100 things to do in Oregon before you die. Native Oregonian, and I've only done half. Several I hadn't heard of.
My first thought was “ Hank Hill.” 😂
Approved😎
Left and right let's roll it.
There are a lor of things people myself included think of when they think of Texas. Here are 5 of the first things I think of:
1. It’s big and everything in Texas is big
2. Low cost of living and low taxes
3. Fast-growing population especially people moving from California
4. Great food, particularly Mexican food/TexMex and barbecue
5. Lots of proud gun owners and it’s a very pro-gun state
About the gun thing, not saying every Texan is like this, just a small group of my uncle's friends, native Texans when I explained I was not a gun owner and did not want to be, they just kind of gave me a judgemental attitude the whole time I was at the cookout, my uncle included. but they are still very friendly
I can tell you Kansas, everybody wants to bring up the wizard of Oz from 1937.
How about Pizza Hut, vornado fans, Learjet, Boeing, beechcraft, Cessna.
Air capital, largest wheat harvest.
I love the Big Texan in Amarillo on I,-40
Do Florida, because it has been my home for over 40 years. Everyone who has been here ha some good memories of this place just about.
Love Texas! If Texas left the Union I'd move there the next day.
Lol yeah ain't no seceding happening, it's actually a kind of in-joke that noobs got carried away with, but as a native Texan I thank you for the positive vibes!
No you wouldn't because Texas will never secede. That's just some fantasy that wannabe Texans from other states believe.
Also the state I would like to do next Illinois .
AHHHHH!!!! Frantic comment, grumble grumble grumble, you this & you that. Whew...glad I got that off my chest.
Yes you said the cowboys but also football in general. Huge high school stadiums in this state
Spanish cattle ended up in Mexico and their semi-wild descendants migrated north to Texas. The roundup of these cattle is what started the cowboy way of life. They were free for the taking. J. Frank Dobie's "The Longhorns" (1941) is an excellent book on the subject.
I 🤔 of 🤠 when I think of Texas. Also always in the national news.
Tennessee… Florida…. Georgia
Elon Musk moved his operations from California to Texas. That tells you pretty much everything you need to know about Texas these days.
Big boots, Big hats, Texas BBQ, Seafood.
The entire state of North Carolina is known for barbecue. Never heard of Lexington,NC but in southeast VA we love Carolina bbq
Blue Bell ice cream, Bluebonnets, World renown Texas Medical Center, The Houston Rodeo, Houston Astros/Rockets, and Dr. Pepper, too!💜
Hello greetings from Keanu Reeves....I know it will come as a surprise to you.....Well am a very social person,I'm down to earth, have a great sense of humor with a good attitude and pleasant character not only in words but in deeds, I don't discriminate anyone and I love making friends.
I didn’t know st.louis was known for bbq lol I thought that was what everyone did
What literally comes to my mind when I think of Texas is the first one: it's cuisine! Texas BBQ.
Are u done doing Best Rural towns series?
As a native Texan, to the rest of the country I’d like to say..you’re welcome
I Love Texas! 👏👏👏 I am from Michigan= 🤷🤷🤷🤷🤷
The Alamo? 1936?
I live in Boerne and its expensive to live here but the food is good and no gangs here it's a peaceful place to live if you can afford it
Hi Briggs.
Hi.
In in Louisiana and I love Texas, but i have to admit the Tech Field is booming in Austin and Given the politics of Texas the city of Austin is quite opposite. But I have to say The TECH field is growing I would cover it on my channel but you do a great job with the maps so i will leave that up to you LOL
I love Texas BBQ. As far as San Jacinto, I can see that. It is drummed into your head in school around Texas.
Here in the panhandle, it’s cotton, cattle, wind, and dust
Okay I am going to remark on each of these and hearing 25 things popping up, no surprise considering just how big our state is, there's a lot to love about it (and dislike haha).
10. BBQ- No surprise! The only time I don't eat the stuff is when I am sick, which I am now unfortunately so I missed out of my dad's bbq for lunch today *sighs* Once I feel better it's all mine. And my mom always does the sides. But yeah 99% of weddings I've been to (all in Texas), BBQ was the thing, especially brisket. Only a few times was it Tex-Mex or Italian.
9. Fun fact- The word Texas comes from the Spanish word Tejas (said Te-has), and that word came from a Native American word (from Caddo natives) and that word meant "Friend" so seeing how that's what the state name actually means, we really like to live up to it. Lol, I once had a classmate in college (we did get along), but she didn't like how Texas was TOO nice, and prefer NYC because they were 'meaner' up there lol.
8. Pretty much grew up on it. I could name a lot of country music artists from here from the Chicks (formally Dixie Chicks) to Willie Nelson. Like Briggs said, there's too many to name lol. Also you can thank Texas for giving ya'll Beyonce lol, she's originally from Texas (Houston area I believe). Texas has a lot concerts all year round, even in small towns with local bands. There's a reason why Austin is known as the Live Music Capital of the World hehe.
7. Being a San Antonio local (I technically live in one of the surrounding counties, but I was born here and went to school here for college and visit the city all of the time), of course the Alamo holds a special place in my heart. I think some people forget it's originally a Mission, along with all of the other SA missions. The famous phrase, "Remember the Alamo" was actually said at the Battle of San Jacinto that won our independence from Mexico.
6. You might as well add Football in general because Texans we LOVE our football. You got Friday Night Lights to College Football. But yeah Dallas Cowboys is very well known. You know it's a darn shame, this franchise is wealthy, but name one Texas that likes the owner. We can't stand the owner at all. I think Jerry Jones is one reason why DC has struggled getting another championship since the 90s. All of that money . . . . . gees. Why can't the guy be more like Peter Holt (owner of NBA San Antonio Spurs).
5. "Houston we have a problem". I feel awful that as a native Texan, I forget about NASA. Maybe it's because I never had a huge interest in space.
4. Um, Briggs, you pronounced the Jacinto wrong, it sounded like you added an R after the T in Jacinto. OMG that story sounds similar to our State Capital Building, it's bigger than the National Capital Building hehe. But yeah I wouldn't have thought of this monument either actually and I AM a native. I know of the Battle itself of course, but not the monument.
3. My parents went to the museum that was all about this story. Fun fact- that famous picture of Oswald getting shot, the man next to him in the light colored outfit with the hat, that's one of my dad's cousins, Jim Leavelle. He was always willing to tell people his story. Sadly he passed away in recent years and my parents went to his funeral, which had a HUGE turnout. I think how my dad and him are related is his father and my dad's father are 1st cousins, I think.
2. LOL it's still one of our biggest resources, why do ya'll think our gas prices are lower compared to other states? My dad is from west Texas (close to the panhandle) and it's a known fact, there are more oil rigs then trees lol.
Honorable Mentions- Nice to hear the Spurs get mentioned as well as our lovely Riverwalk. Bigotry?! Where are people getting that from? I am just as confused. OMG yeah Chili is big here lol. Real stuff has no beans lol. Heat for sure and our slogans! Don't Mess with Texas is actually an environmental phrase meaning "don't litter!" You'll find that along Texas highways. I definitely have added Rodeos too. We love our actual cowboys here lol.
1. You betcha Texas is HUGE on agriculture. I graduated from a rural area High School and 3/4ths of my class were going to major in this industry, most of the others wanted to get into Education. I was in the minority that wanted to get into the Arts lol. But we got FFA down here. I got family who are Ranchers. But yeah we love our Longhorns hehe.
Interesting list. I like it!
Minnesota next please.
Saw brahma and Charolais cattle,, but nary a longhorn .
Great state wish it was farther north though.
You did a 5 minute Google search on Texas. 🤣
I would have thought of Tornados 🌪.
I've also never heard of that monument. Nothing against it per se but I'm 36 and I've never heard of it Lol 😆.
Alaska, Pissing Off Texas Since 1959 🤣🤣
Native Texan here. Get me out! LOL 😅
You need pictures of barbequing, not grilling when you talk about barbecue.
It’s not a bad state at all, but not the best for me. That’s why I wanna move.
I remember Gumby and Pokey .
Do one of El Paso TX

Oh yes, BBQ! One of the few things we have not totally screwed up in the last 7000 years.
Armadillos!
Texas love there trucks
Texas is full. Yes all of it. If you don't like it you're probably right more power to you. Please stay where you are or move somewhere else.
I don't forget the history of the comanche Indian wars from the 1830s to 1877. On the southern great plains known as comanche empire!
Hello greetings from Keanu Reeves....I know it will come as a surprise to you.....Well am a very social person,I'm down to earth, have a great sense of humor with a good attitude and pleasant character not only in words but in deeds, I don't discriminate anyone and I love making friends.
I was the first person to mention JFK on RUclips community post.
To me Texas is big, getting crowded, getting expensive, and it’s warm weather, hot in the summer though
And here it is: TEXAS! Home of mean deadly snakes, scorpions and things deadly. I lived in the Boonies. Texas must be doing something right. I have 2 brother's who live in that State. Plus San Antonio was fun when I went there.
I was too young to remember, but San Antonio is very beautiful.
My favorite is Tanya Tucker
When I think of JFK I think Elm Street.
By the way it's not oil, it's Texas tea.
As a native Texan, I know someone will be offended. Lol
Hey you should do the lowest apartment/ average prices in each state! And if you could shout out TopMightHoodPicks (a music channel). The reason I say this is because I want to move to Seattle and I’d like to know the average price for each state so I can better know how to save money with each state
Hey Briggs, where did you find that thumbnail picture? Asking for a friend
