It's because Americans can relate to and empathize with the immense struggles that the Scottish people endured in trying to gain and finally winning their freedom from England.

@@hamilt55467 Self-loathing much? American agriculture and animal husbandry has transformed the world's food supply. One of the biggest problems of the world, through huge amounts on history has been starvation. We shoved the pendulum the other direction. Yep, we pushed a bit too far and now we have too much food. We overeat. Big f*cking deal! We'll figure it out, eventually. Show a little gratitude. You will (most likely) live three times longer than most of past humanity and you may die of a problem of "too much" maybe diabetes or some such. As a Texan who spent a couple of weeks in Scotland, I have to say that I, too, felt a kinship between myself and the Scots with whom my wife and I interacted. As with Texas, there seems to be a great deal of pride associated with being Scottish, and the attitude towards that pride is very similar; it is kind of a tongue-in-cheek acknowledgement that you're from and/or live in a place that's a bit more special than most people perceive it to be. It's very hard to describe, but it is absolutely palpable and 100% unapologetic. My wife and I are both anxious to get back to Scotland as soon as possible so that we can continue exploring the wonderful place that we found it to be.

I went to a party in Texas 20 years ago. The most beautiful woman I had ever seen sat down at the backyard pool and her purse fell over. Out popped a pair of sexy panties and a semi-auto pistol. I moved there a year later and never looked back. BTW... the reason everyone is so polite is because everyone is armed to the teeth!
Surprising to most though - we hardly ever have to use 'em. They're meant for defense. It sounds kinda crazy to people who don't feel that way about guns, but the best way to stop a crazy shooter at a concert or event is for prepared and well-trained citizens to stop them, as they don't have to wait for the police to show up. Texas is big. Police have a ways to go sometimes and a lot of people can be hurt or killed fast if the shooter is the only one packing. Personally, I feel the most safe at a concert with a seasoned grey hair with a gun in their holster scanning the room around me.

@@timesthree5757 Some years ago I got interested in American Indian folk lore and read as many collections of it as i could find. I noticed something interesting about their creation myths. Although they were as varied as you could imagine, every single one of them had one detail in common, people were not created with the world. In every single Indian creation story I have ever read, people are, somehow, already living before the world is created and are taken from wherever they were, the Happy Hunting Ground, the sky, asleep in a cave, and *put* into the Earth. I think this indicates that, as diverse as the different tales are, they all go back to common original, and that the first settlers were aware of the fact that they had come from one distinct place to another distinct place, and that initial understanding got incorporated into their mythology.
Shaun, I'm watching this late at night, waiting for an ice storm to come in here by Galveston. You've been away too long and you need to get back to your adopted home state. I'm pleased with how much pride you have in Texas, when you're not even from here. I consider you an honorary Texan, personally. Glad you got to come over and experience it! Hopefully you can check out Houston and San Antonio next time you come through. I recommend you check out The Galleria in Houston, and the River Walk and the Alamo in San Antonio. I know you said you've been to NASA in another video. Hope you enjoyed that, as well! And you haven't experienced Texas heat until you've been in Houston in the middle of summer on a 100°F+ day. My buddy who's in Afghanistan said it feels nicer over there than here during the summers. Lol Anyway, come on back to Texas when you get the chance! We're glad to have you. Take care!
Well I about died laughing. I heard you say your first impression of Texas was In and Out burger. I immediately paused the video and started a rant to my husband about how In and Out is a California burger NOT a Texas burger and why didn’t they take you to Whataburger?! Then I pushed play and continued listening. My husband then gave a snort laugh and said “apparently your fellow Texans already filled him in on his grave mistake”. 😂 AMEN! Correct - next to BBQ, TexMex is the other main cultural type of food of Texas. Most people in Texas cities now, are not actually from Texas. You will find descendants of transplanted Scots the whole way up and down the Appalachian mountains. The middle Atlantic area, Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia, are full of those of Scots Ancestry. Many were the stubborn dissenters, mostly Presbyterians, who left Scotland after the Test Act of 1703. Many immigrants from Ulster and the Lochalsh area were given land so they could serve as a 'buffer' between the native Americans on the frontier and the more developed settlements near the Atlantic coast.

As for the amazing Mexican food, find a little place owned by a family, not a chain. Find a place with homemade chips and tortillas. Just ask around, the locals will have some unified average answer. If heat is a problem (hot sauce etc.) just say so, nobody will think any less of you.

When you come back to Texas you need to spend about a month. Spend a week on the coast in places like Galveston and Corpus Christi with a couple of days in Houston for good measure. Next spend a couple of days in San Antonio and a couple of days in California East.... I mean Austin. You should also spend some time in West Texas exploring the geography and small town culture between San Antonio and El Paso. Then, traveling from the desert to the forest, so to speak, go explore East Texas and maybe go fishing on one of the many reservoirs like Toledo Bend on the Texas/Louisiana borders. And you've got to enjoy the many different cuisines in each area. Might want to buy some pants a size bigger in the waist.

I live in Austin, and agree. It’s an odd mix of Ron Paul libertarians, alcoholic musicians, and Californians who moved here but don’t understand why we don’t want them to make our state as bad as the place they fled.
Texas has great diversity. You need to visit Dallas, Houston, Galveston, Austin, and San Antonio just to start to see all the variety. The Panhandle, the Valley and West Texas & El Paso are unique as well. So much to see & experience!
I was born in the South Plains area around Lubbock, and lived in Dallas, Houston, and Austin. I’ve lived in Central Texas for over 40 years and it has probably changed more than any other part of Texas. I still say that the people of west Texas and the Panhandle embody the spirit and essence of Texas more than any other area. Although politically very conservative, they are very friendly and will go to great lengths to help anyone who needs it. I’m probably a bit biased since I spent my childhood there and still have relatives across that part of Texas, but from their Texas twang to their desire to make you welcome there is no region more purely Texan!
Shaun, next time you come down you need to hit up lake fork. It is east of Dallas and home of the biggest large mouth bass in the state. They are frequently over 10 lbs and up to 17 lbs is not unheard of. Happy fishing!
I think Texas is traditionally considered the most American state. I say this as a very proud Illinoisan. Remember the Alamo! The hat looks good on you, man! Take it out to the pub!
There are a LOT of people in Texas that have just as much pride in being an American as they are in being Texan. You can hear that shout of of "MURICA!" by a lot of "good 'ol boys" and others when the situation calls for it. Diversity in culture, different areas and backgrounds. Unless you travel extensively to different areas of Texas you will see that attitudes and pride in things vary.
I’m glad you had a great stay in Texas and thank you for the kind comments! I live in Amarillo and we see a lot of tourist from oversees as they travel Old Route 66. Always enjoy meeting people from oversees. Once again, I’m glad you had a great experience in the Great State of Texas!

Fire Fux Texas also has those absolutely lovely moments where it’s anywhere between 60 to 85 or so outside and just about perfect, yesterday being one of those times.

Ooof, yeah I've heard from native Austinites, who's families have lived there for generations, are literally getting pushed out of the area because prices are skyrocketing thanks to the people moving there, especially Californians. It saddens me to hear that.
Hey don't forget us down here in the Rio Grande Valley! We're always forgotten. We have South Padre Island and SpaceX!
@@historygal7 Tell that to the Spring Break crowd.
@@joegibson4946 spring break is only in March lol. Locals stay away. Wait for a proper clean up and disinfection then we’re back on the Island. Not a problem at all! We deserve a little love down here too. lol
@@historygal7 I a good part of June & July 1979 on Padre Island responding to the Ixtoc I oil spill that put a lot of tar balls on the beach. It may not have been spring break but there were plenty of partiers on the beach. The larger tar balls hit the beaches in Mexico. Most of what landed on Padre Island was smaller than a silver dollar.
As a proud Texan, I love that you love Texas! Tips for your next visit:
1. Remember the Alamo
2. Eat at Whataburger (pronounced water-burger)
3. Expect everything to be bigger and better
Waterburger? Lol. I've never heard anyone say it like that. I've heard whuttaburger and waddaburger. Ive never heard it with an R except british or australians who put an r at the end of names like instead of "eliza" they say "elizer". Thank you for sharing. That brightened my day with a giggle :)
You forgot breakfast tacos.
I grew up saying water-burger, but it’s more of a subtle r sound that my family uses🤷🏻♂️
I subscribed about a week ago and I have not regretted it. Your great! I visited Scotland and was blown away by the beauty of your country. It rivals Texas. It could be its beautiful twin. The Scottish were amazing and amazingly awesome. I have 2 kittens and we all love your accent and your show. This is a great link to Scottish culture.
Really glad to hear you’ve joined in. Thanks a lot :)
I love seeing Europeans get suprised at how hospitable us Texans are. It's real funny
To be fair, Texans are a lot less hospitable these days...
@@andreww9513 - blame the idiots who are not from Texas that moved into Texas… prime example: Chicagoans and Californians…. as well as illegal immigrants.
@@SlickRick4EVER Oh so you moved here after 2000 and made it your whole personality. Understood.
Former Secretary of the US Navy James H. Webb wrote "Born Fighting: How the Scots- Irish shaped America". He talks a lot about his heritage.
Yes! Shaun should def read that book! So entertaining and informative!
You definitely need to try Whataburger (get the Texas toast burger), definitely go to Galveston and yes, the BBQ is nothing I’ve had before. Also, being a temporary expat from Indiana with Scottish heritage, the heat is intense and people in Texas are extremely hospitable however, until they get behind the wheel of a vehicle. lol
All jokes aside, it is all you said and more, amazing. (Beyond huge!!!) Great vid and btw, I just subscribed. Thanks and have a great day.
Yes, go to Galveston.
@Matthew Martin Get away from the big cities, and you'll still see "Sunday drivers" pull over onto the shoulder to let "folks in a hurry" get on by... and you'll still see complete strangers waving "howdy", and no, it's not because they think you're someone else.
DALLAS, however, is a WHOLE different story!
Keep up... or get run over!
As a native Texan with Scottish ancestors I wanted to say how much I enjoyed your video and to invite you to come back soon!
I was working on a ranch in Michigan with a Texan cowboy. The best complement I had was “you are crazy enough to be a Texan”. I’m a 4”11’ woman
As a proud Texan, we are glad you loved our state. Tip: Check that hat, may be on backward. You gotta go to Houston, San Antonio next. Skip Austin, work in progress... Come back soon!
I'm from Houston, but don't skip Austin you have to experience it's different cities.
@@jaquelinefranco3977 I guess but its basically portland, seattle, or san francisco with better music and food.
I live in Austin, and agree. It’s an odd mix of Ron Paul libertarians, alcoholic musicians, and Californians who moved here but don’t understand why we don’t want them to make our state as bad as the place they fled.
jim hughes I live in Austin and I agree. Skip this city. It’s bad.
Lol same but he should visit the Georgetown square! Avoid all the retired people they are incredibly mean😂
Hey Shaun, I live in San Antonio, Texas. I'm glad to hear you had a good experience in our great state. I hope you come back soon.
Texas has great diversity. You need to visit Dallas, Houston, Galveston, Austin, and San Antonio just to start to see all the variety. The Panhandle, the Valley and West Texas & El Paso are unique as well. So much to see & experience!
Callie Masters I’d love to explore it more 😊
I was born in the South Plains area around Lubbock, and lived in Dallas, Houston, and Austin.
Not really. Texas is the most Texan state.
If you do get back to Texas, you got to try Blue Bell Home Vanilla ice cream. Best you will ever have!
If I don't eat it all first.
that's a fact!
Ohhhh yeah with warm apple pie
Hell, try Blue Bell ANYTHING!!!!!
Lol, that little creamery in Brenham.
"We eat all we can and sell the rest!"
Glad you got to visit one of the states with a strong cultural identity. I'd like to go there too. Nice work Shaun.
cheers Rob, so much more i need to see though
It is the best state - we are the only state that was ever it's own country!!! Come visit us anytime!!!
@Deborah Shaw I'm from Michigan. We are the Kraft Macaroni and Cheese of states.
Erin Montgomery Did you forget about Hawaii?
@@notnek202...what about Hawaii...?
I’m glad you had a great stay in Texas and thank you for the kind comments! I live in Amarillo and we see a lot of tourist from oversees as they travel Old Route 66. Always enjoy meeting people
from oversees. Once again, I’m glad you had a great experience in the Great State of Texas!
All of my Scottish ancestors immigrated to Texas 🏴
Ruby Tallulah would love to connect with more people from this community
Mine to Kentucky. 😂
Polish went to Chicago and Swedish went to Minnesota. Italians new York. Asians California. Intresting history behind it.
I'm part Polish and there was a big Polish community there in Michigan but were chased out by Muslims just like a Jewish community not far from where I lived before. Can you say Dearborn and a few cities nearby? White flight from them.
There were a lot of Italians in Detroit and it's suburbs. Gone now. White flight again.
I'm biased being a Texan, but geographically Texas is very diverse!
can't wait to explore more
Texas could been divided into several smaller States when it joined the US. It’s huge and diverse!

It really is a great place to live. I’ve been here since ‘77 and Still haven’t seen it All! 😊😊
Texas could be one of the best places on Earth if it weren't so bloody hot in the summer!
I moved from Houston to San Francisco 20+ years ago and I haven't warmed up since, I tell you what...
Summer? It's hot here from mid spring till mid to late fall. December, January, and occassionally February are our only cold months.
Fire Fux Texas also has those absolutely lovely moments where it’s anywhere between 60 to 85 or so outside and just about perfect, yesterday being one of those times. The heat, at least here in central Texas is usually only downright oppressive from late May to early September for me. Come Summertime, it it doesn’t involve water, beer or BBQ, then I’ll see you after six. 😎🍺
Fire Fux So true!!!!
The algorithm just suggested this to me and I'm not mad about it. I spent a semester at the university in your fine city of Edinburgh and adored that place--glad to hear you had a good time in my country as well. :)
You should swing by Houston next time, home of N.A.S.A.
Also, you can't simply speak of Texas without firing a rifle in the video. We love our firearms ;)
@midgetydeath yeah Texas will absorb the bullet and then release their tigers on you while fighting Oklahoma
What the fuck
Georgia here, that Federal Government monster that extracts Wealth and provides absolutely no benefits to the States has been getting more and more corrupt. If Texas and Florida want to show those arrogant Rich people what is means to be American, we have your back in Georgia.

It's Saturday, and I woke up to a neighbor playing bag pipes this morning in Houston, Texas y'all
For some reason my mind jumps to Montrose. I just see that being right at home there. I dig it.
Did y'all drink a Lone Star afterwards or a Shiner ?
As a Texan born and raised keep using both hats and we're happy you were able to see the other small states lol.
I was born in East Texas, which is known as the “redneck” region. 🤠 Moved to Dallas when I was 5 and I’ve lived here ever since. Dallas can be very snobby and “ bougie” but we will always be friendly. Southern hospitality is real y’all 🥺
That’s not what the rest of Texas thinks about East Texas. You are just removed from Louisiana.
Anywhere outside of major cities is considered redneck but that doesn't mean people are everywhere you go. Yes Dallas is a money city, very superficial(land of the most leased BMWs in the U.S.). But people are mostly hospitable
@@coreyfeldhaus6887 That’s probably because they’ve never actually been to east Texas or have ever lived there to really know lol
Soooo, I guess you now know why people in Texas ( The southern U.S. in general ) are CRAZY as hell....because it is HOT AS HELL 9 months out of the year!....(It's also why we talk slower....you'll pass out if you talk fast in the heat!)
bluesageful we are crazy as hell? News to me
All the folks I’ve known from Texas are crazy as hell. They were mostly from Houston. Love Texas.
@@albrechtschobel9835 we have more than a few crazies. What is different is how we embrace them. We put them on the front porch and give them sweet tea. We are proud of our crazies. They are fun!
I know cause my kids say I am one.
So glad you came, and loved everything you experienced! That was just the tip of the iceberg. So much more to see and fun to be had. You obviously fit right in!😀
Your Hat is on Backwards.
I'm an American from the state of Michigan, I can confirm Whataburger is amazing, definitely my favorite fast food joint. I also compete in rodeos and at the Fort Worth stockyards rodeo was the one time I know I had an international interaction by chatting and taking pictures with a family from Sweden which was very cool.
