      I think I understand how you feel. The issue really lies with public health and safety. Most eye diseases don't affect your vision until its really too late to do anything - It makes me so very sad when people come in with vision loss just for me to diagnose them with a condition that I could have treated and maybe even prevented if we had caught it years or months earlier. So its good to have the eyes checked regularly or at least once a year - even if you feel your eyesight is fine.

    Good morning Dr. I love your videos. I have learned so much from watching. I have high myopia and have macular degeneration from that. I’ve had two bleeds and a partial tear of my retina which was fixed by laser. I can no longer drive because of vision loss. My big concern is I do not want to lose more vision even though I’m pretty sure that’s what’s gonna happen. You had done a video on Scalera lenses, which help people who are myopic. I was wondering at this stage of the game is there any benefit at all that I could gain from lenses like that? And I have seen a few studies recently where they are thinking starting young children with glasses instead of having them do I exercises might I have been the best way to go. Any insight you can offer we greatly appreciate it. Thanks for all the time and effort you devote to your channel.

    • @thomascollins4693
      @thomascollins4693 2 года назад +3

      I hope you don't mind my input (optometrist). Unfortunately, it sounds like you have developed myopic choroidal neovascularisation. This is considered a late stage sign of pathological myopia. Your eye is likely already quite large by the sound of your info. What is your age and eye power? My advice is regular screening and watch for symptoms of floaters, flashing light in your vision or acute blurring. Check your vision at home one eye at a time by covering one eye and looking say a clock and if it's blurred more than the day before get immediate assessment. Good luck!

    • @DoctorEyeHealth
      @DoctorEyeHealth  2 года назад +3

      Hey thanks so much Susan! I appreciate you sharing your story and some of the challenges you are facing.
      Specialty contact lenses, such as scleral lenses or RGP lenses, can offer better vision for some people. Those lenses won't do anything for stopping the retinal changes but it could perhaps sharpen the optical quality for which you experience. I personally wouldn't jump straight to those as the answer, but if someone was motivated and wanted to try them just to test it out, I wouldn't be apposed to it either.
      Usually I get better results from specialty lenses when someone has a corneal disease that has scarring or warpage. But again, it could perhaps give slightly sharper vision vs glasses or soft contacts.
      Either way, I encourage you to continue following up with your local eye doctor and wish you the best. Thanks so much for watching!

    Hey doc, I have a question. So, the cornea gets gas exchange directly from atmosphere. I'm guessing it gets the other nutrients from the tear film and diffusion through itself from the surrounding vascular sclera. You said that for this reason, non-breathable contacts can't be worn for more than a few hours at a time. Sleeping in them can kill the corneal tissue. You said in the past that when we sleep, the fact that our eyelids are closed and covering the corneas causes edema and swelling and some other irritation changes due to the mild suffocation which fade once we wake up and they can touch the atmosphere again. My question is, how do coma patients not seriously damage their corneas when their eyes are closed 24/7 for weeks or months or even years at a time? Do coma ward nurses open patients' eyes for a certain amount of time per day and put lubricating drops in them for moisture while they are allowed to stay open for that time?

    I just wear regular contacts. Being refitted for a specific brand and then finding cosplay lenses that aren't scammy where I live is not only a pain, but they don't tend to sell costume lenses where I live. My eye doctor's office doesn't sell contacts so I go through Costco since they are the cheapest ones. I live in a pretty small town where there are almost no options available either, and colored contacts just aren't sold outside of just regular colored ones. My eyes are also incredibly dark brown so colored contacts just don't work for me, much like hair dye doesn't work without bleaching my hair. It's just not worth the hassle and I don't go anywhere anyway.

    • @RyKoMedia

      You want to be as close to the power as possible, and never go over. So if your at -3.75, get -3.5. It wont be perfect and youll prob find yourself squinting sometimes. Going with a higher power(-4.00) will put a certain kind of strain on your eyes that you will eventually start feeling after a short period of time.

    Gotta say, I appreciate you my brotha. Thanks for the content!
    I quickly discovered the importance of solution and its benefits after putting in the contact I bought at a local store. It stung for a bit, but subsided shortly after. (2-3 min of blinking rapidly, prob not smart though LMAO.) I'm lucky, I know.
    However, I purchased "re-nu" solution and after cleaning the contacts with that solution and allowing them to soak it up a bit in the case, then replacing the fluid once again before putting them in... it felt like BLISS compared to the original solution. Not to mention less effort in ... installing them.
    I can typically do around 2-4 hours and have no problems. I will be aware of the exp date from now on though. Very good tip there.

    Have been wearing contacts and glasses for years without change in prescription and this guy here is telling me I have to pay for a worthless prescription every year because.... Reasons. I can buy contacts and glasses in Korea without a prescription. Hell, they'll check your vision and do a fitting for free. All you have to do is pay for the product.
    Realize you are getting scammed every year by insurance and eye doctors to pay for crap you dont want.

    I purchased some non-rx colored contacts and I can see a black ring in my vision when I put them in. I was afraid to wear them because of the ring in my vision. Is it because the diameter was wrong? I have had intralase surgery and don't need prescription lenses. Thanks!

    Hi Dr. Joe....question-in my teens and early 20's I had no trouble getting opaque coloured lenses to change my eye colour through my eye doctor. Never had any trouble with them. Now all these years later, I wanted to get coloured lenses again. My eye doctor will only allow me to get Air Optix colours as that's all they sell and have fit me for...they do NOT seem to change my eyes colour. Iv'e tried almost all the colours, the only one that had any slight effect was Honey which gave my eyes a slight glow. Are Air Optix supposed to be opaque or only to enhance your natural colour. Blue, grey, green, or turquoise never showed up on my eyes. What options do I have?

    My eyes got smaller when I see older picture and now it's got smaller and also sometime it's burning a little and I can not see with full open eye normally I squeeze my eyes while seeing what's the reason sir

    • @DoctorEyeHealth
      @DoctorEyeHealth  2 года назад +1

      Thanks for asking! Over time, the eyes may appear to close due to changes in the eyelids. This can occur for some people at a younger age due to some medical concerns and is always good to ask a local professional. The squeezing of the eyes together creates a pinhole effect which can eliminate stray rays of light and create a sharper image. It means you may require new glasses.

    I was reading on the cosplay contact website and it was saying
    I guess that the contacts are made of all contain HEMA.
    Well, what does that mean? Is that Hema the same products that are in plastic nail tips and nail products? Because if it is, that’s what was causing a lot of people to break out with allergies to nail products, including myself!! I can’t even get one drop of Hema on my skin/nails without breaking out for about four months with cracked bleeding fingertips!
    So you’re saying that the lenses are old made of some type of plastic? If that’s true, and these are contain HEMA, and I put these into my eyes I could lose both eyeballs! So I’m so glad that I’m getting informed before making any decisions, I might just skip all of this and go to my eye doctor. !!!!
    Thank you for this video. It’s extremely informative.❤

    Not everyone who puts contacts on needs a prescription lense. Especially since your talking about costume use. That part is completley wack. You dont need a prescription to wear contacts safely 🤦🏼‍♀️ the overall way that the video was done came off really harsh, the message being contacts are not safe, dont buy them. Im not sure if thats what u were going for...

    • @DoctorEyeHealth
      @DoctorEyeHealth  2 года назад +3

      Well without an exam I cannot speak directly to your case, but in general, contact lenses can do a few things to the ocular health long term.
      1. Contact lenses increase the risk of dry eye disease (mainly due to evaporation of the tear film - leading to inflammation on the eye)
      2. Contact lens wear may be associated with less blinking or incomplete blinking which can contribute to meibomian gland dysfunction
      3. Contact lens wear can result in corneal warpage (especially overwear/sleeping in lenses)
      4. There are some microscopic changes to the corneal physiology due to hypoxia (lack of oxygen) long term but no serious consequences notes at this time from this change.

    “Systane Ultra PF - preservative free dry eye relief”
    It Doesn’t say “For Contacts”
    BUT, it doesn’t state anywhere
    not to…
    usually Visine or Clear Eyes will say on their bottles or package, “DO NOT USE WITH CONTACTS”
