The year is 5672 CE. Mankind has moved to the stars. The 1911 is still in production.
The 5611 was a serious update though. Same great trigger, but such a flat shooter now that it shoots high-intensity gamma-ray bursts. Of course, us old-timers still know that the .45 ACP has more stopping power.
To be fair it is a sexy pistol

The 1911 still my favorite pistol
It’s a lot quicker naming companies that do not produce 1911s than it would naming those that do.
You could say the same thing about Glock clones too 🤷🏼♂️
@@saintsman77tw not really. Sure there are some pistols that can fit Glock magazines and there are a handful of companies that produce Glock Gen 3 clones. But for the most part striker fired pistols are not exact copies of Glock. For example, a Glock mag would not fit in a M&P, Sig p320, XD, ect.
Most do lack the skill and wrist strength to support a steel frame and recoil. But they can still make macaroni art for the ward nurse.
@@saintsman77tw No sir, 1911's have been copied for decades before glock even came out in 1980.
@@saintsman77tw The Glock is a Browning with a plastic frame and without a safety. Browning abandoned the “no safety” idea sometime about 1905 IIRC. People were smarter then I guess. The Glock has at least 3 Browning patents or inventions dating back to 1900 or so.
People keep saying that yet I keep buying them.

1911 grips are replaceable after being dog chewed. Glock owner has to replace the frame and probably the slide. Funny thing: if you have too you can shoot a 1911 with no grips on it. Try shooting a Glock with dog chewed frame or slide at your peril.

Silly premise. Only an idiot would allow a dog to get a hold of their firearm and shouldn't have either.
Um, if it fell into obscurity, how is there one on my hip?
The future is now old man.
I’m guessing it’s because you’re probably a boomer
Just because there’s a record player in my living room doesn’t mean a record player isn’t obscure.
Well, for a little while it did. I think people had to realize the merits of the platform and get over the polymer craze. A bobtail commander will always be one of my favorites and carrying one doesn't make me feel under equipped at all.
Being obscure doesn't mean no one carries it. What are you even on about?
No matter what you say, most gun enthusiasts have one or want one.
My dad gave me my first pistol when I was 6 years old. Taught me how to load, unload, shoot, field strip, clean and reassemble my pistol. It was his old Colt 1911 45 ACP. This has and is my favorite pistol/cartridge combination for the past 70 years, and I haven't yet come up with a good reason to change my mind.
When I was 10 or 11 my uncle bought a new Colt 1911 (1971-ish). He and my dad were shooting at a soup can on a tree stump and both emptied a magazine and never hit the can. I laughed. My uncle loaded the magazine and handed me ol' slabsides, "Since you think it's funny, you try it". I hit the can with the third round and laughed again.
Ever since then, I have always thought the 1911 is the coolest thing since they put pockets on pants. The second pistol I ever bought myself was a 1911 and I spent a truckload of money for it... thank you Bill Wilson.
So your dad gave you your 1st pistol at just 6 years old. A Colt 1911 .45 acp. Taught you to clean , load and unload and shoot it at just 6 years old. A hand gun that weighs 2.5 lbs unloaded and 3.25 lbs or 39 Oz when loaded . So at just 6 years old you were shooting a handgun with .45 acp worth of recoil and a 3.25 lb weight at just 6 years old ? My dad was a fighter pilot in the US Marine Corps and later The USAF . He gave me my 1st fighter jet at just 6 years of age . A F-16 he taught me to clean load and unload and fly at just 6 years old. Which is only slightly more believable than your being given a Colt 1911 .45 acp at 6 years old and learning g to clean , load , unload and shooting at just 6 years old. The weight, required hand size and significant recoil of the .45 acp chambered Colt 1911 are all hurdles I find prohibitive for even the biggest , most intelligent and gutsy 6 year old to overcome. I might be wrong and you may be absolutely telling the truth but I was blessed with something known as Common Sense and the ability to correctly use it when confronted with a situation that it's best suited for. And Common Sense should indicate to everyone having it and just basic knowledge of the Colt 1911 .45 acp that you have a exaggeration capacity that's unparalleled. Or your just not being honest. Here's a bit of firearm knowledge for you to try wrapping your head around. The .45 ACP is more powerful than the much larger cased .45 Colt cartridge . It has a heavier recoil and higher velocity firing from the same barrel length. The .45 ACP + P cartridge is too powerful to be fired by all but a select number of 1911 models manufactured today.
6 year old owning and firing a loaded Colt 1911 .45 acp ....with a unloaded weight of 2.5 lbs and a loaded weight of 3.25 lbs . And requiring more than the
grip strength and nerve of the average 14 year old to hold on to during it recoil portion of the firing cycle. Hmmm , that's a tough one to believe. But what would I know being a retired US Army Soldier and licensed , qualified gunsmith with 30 + years of far above normal experience withboththe Colt 1911 and the. 45 acp round itself ? Probably not much😮
@@GorillaCookies well, nothing's saying you have to believe me. As far as the recoil of the 1911 in 45 ACP, Jeff Cooper (you must know who he is with your background) had shown a number of times a 1911 45 ACP could be fired using only the thumb and index finger. I don't know if that impresses you but it goes to show that the recoil of said firearm has been much over rated.
@@BusterKitten the 1911 is the best pistol and the .45 ACP bullet is the only round that I will use for self defense.
U.S. Navy ships still were using the 1911A1 in 1995 when I went to Fleet Reserve after 23.5 years of service.

I understand that the military moved from the 1911, under Carter for the sole reason that the majority of NATO used the 9mm, not because of any impact on effectiveness.
No. 45 ACP is way more than you need in close quarters, the 1911 is very heavy for only 7 bullets. It was always going to be replaced by modern technology
A reason, yes, some reason, no. Simplified logistics and compatibility with partner nations was a reason. But also a heavy, low round pistol was in itself problematic. Not to mention all the Government owned 1911s were worn out by then.
It was Jeff Cooper that promoted the use of the 1911 from the 70's till the 90's. Since he was also pretty much the father of practical pistol shooting, he was the cause of the modern esteem for the gun. Now, lots of young guys who never heard of Cooper love the pistol.
Also the guy who built a 1911 with all parts from the spare parts catalogue and found that it shot every bit as well as a factory one straight from the box.

I started carrying a 1911 in 1973. Spent six years in the military and then 37+ years in law enforcement every single one of those days I carried a 1911 I’ve actually used the 1911 for the reason it was built and designed for, in all those years, it never failed to do its job. Also carry a full-size 1911 every day as my carry gun. It works it works well it functions well. It looks well as long as you the operator know how to use it and take care of it and practice with it you’ll never have any regrets. Now having said that, whatever you want to carry and practice with go for it. But I’m telling you for a fact, a 1911 is a well built, well-designed purpose built extremely reliable handgun. lastly, remember you have no idea what experience this person has. He has a blog. He says he knows about guns, but who knows. Just like I would never say I’m an expert and I would never tell you what you should or should not carry all this is is a commercial, and his blog makes him money.
Anyone serious about pistols will eventually see the inherent advantages to the design of the 1911. The comparisons to modern handguns and usage are secondary to its unique value. 1911’s have Better stock triggers, better shoot ability, slim profiles (even in some double stacks) and are a piece of American history that will never fade. They don’t have to be a Glock 19 to have their own unique value…

as a career Army MP the 45 was my weapon of choice. It was too big to ever carry comfortably when driving a vehicle. It was too heavy to carry on a hip without resulting in bruising. It was too shiny not to be seen when patrolling on foot at night.
But o-man! If you struck your aim point - that target would spin like a top!
Yeah. 1911 is still my first choice :)

Like Browning's 50 BMG M2 Machine Gun, the 1911 is still relevant. Browning was a genius and had no computers to help him design.
The 1911 HAS NOT fallen
To say it has is to deny reality
It has though. I literally don’t know a single person who chooses to carry a 1911. 1911s have been relegated to overpriced range toys and barbecue guns. As far as practical guns go, the 1911 is trash. Size, weight, capacity, price, sub-par reliability compared to modern handguns makes the 1911 a bad option all around.
@@saintsman77tw well you are choosing not to see

@@genroc2005 I can see why people think they’re cool, the same way I can see why people think a Model A is cool. I happen to like 1911s actually. But objectively, a Toyota Camry is an all around better car than a Model A, the same way a cheap plastic Glock is an all around better gun than a 1911. Plus, if your only reason for carrying it is because it’s made out of metal instead of plastic, there are far better all metal options like the Beretta 92 series, the CZ75 series of pistols, the Sig P226 (which is what I carry, not a Glock) etc. You’re free to carry what you want, I’m just saying there are far better options.

All nonsense aside, if you're on a budget you're not gonna get a better 1911 than the one you have. If it works, isn't a malfunction clearance training device, and is more accurate than you, just keep using what you've got. I've got five 1911s ranging from a cheap Girsan 1911 to a pair of custom ones I built myself. The customs don't do anything the Girsan doesn't. Aside from look prettier maybe.
I vomit every time i hear that myth about the 1911 being a "handfit every part to one gun, only gun".
I have an m1911 that was made in 1912. The slide is a Colt slide, the frame is a Springfield Armory frame. Springfield Armory was ordered to manufacture m1911s very early, to help Colt reach the numbers required by the U.S. Rather than Colt sending the blueprints of the m1911 to Springfield Armory, they sent several finished pistols to Springfield Armory. The Armory took the average of all measurements from the pistols and used that to manufacture about 50,000 m1911 pistols. They were then ordered to stop production on the m1911 and to increase production of the m1903 rifle. The parts from unfinished m1911s were then sent to Colt, so they may used the parts to finish Colt m1911 pistols.
Colt did use some Springfield Armory m1911 parts to finish some Colt m1911 pistols. The pistol I own, that has a SA frame and a Colt slide, may be one of these pistols made with components from Colt and Springfield Armory. Or, it is a parts gun that was repaired by a U.S. military Armorer at some time. Unfortunately, there is no way to tell.
I have Colt, Ithaca and Remington 1911a1s from WW2. All still work perfectly. I have several modern Colts and a double stack Para Ordinance. They all work. JMB was a genius.
The design is so genious that it’s difficult for it to disappear. I still prefer the single stack over the 2011.
Same here.
Me as well. The 1911 grip-both shape and angle-are still the most comfortable and natural pointing design out there.
It’s not though. It’s ridiculously over complicated for what it needs to be, the parts have to be hand fit, the tolerances are so tight that it negatively affects reliability, you need tools to disassemble it. Literally the only thing the 1911 has going for it over other guns is the trigger, and even that can be rivaled with modern pistols. If it wasn’t for the fact that it was used in WW1 and WW2, the 1911 would have been long forgotten. It’s not even JMB’s most popular design. The Browning Hi-Power has far more widespread use than the 1911 ever did, and is still the main sidearm of several militaries and police forces all around the world.
@@saintsman77tw 1911's are only unreliable if you use crappy magazines, don't know how to tune an extractor and mess with your feed ramp. Yes, they are built different and they're not for everyone. You either like them or you don't. That's why there's polymer guns if you just want a modern gun with no had fitting, good factory mags, etc.

At 2 minutes 30 seconds into video the narrator claims that from March 29, 1911 to 2017 over 68,000 of these guns were produced. I don't think that's correct. Armscor/RIA is the largest manufacturer of 1911-style pistols in the world. They're a Philippine company, it is true - and not American - but with a real and tangible connection to the U.S. Owner Martin Tauson named his company "Rock Island Arsenal" after "The Rock" a.k.a. Thanks man
That was my first pistol also. I wish I still had it.
38 Super was by design a gunfighter's cartridge. The reason being that Treasury Agents (later FBI) who were battling the gangland era's most-notorious criminals and criminal gangs, needed something which had better penetration against the primitive body armor they sometimes encountered and also automotive sheet metal and glass. Elliott Ness and his Untouchables even had Thompson SMGs chambered in 38 Super... now if that isn't cool, what is? The 38 Super found new life much later on as a competition cartridge for many practical shooting applications in M1911-style pistols. Given its age and the many cartridge and FA developments since the 1930s, I doubt too many agencies still use the 38 Super, but you never know.... maybe someone in that line of work can set us straight.

It is the Most Perfect Handgun ever devised.
I think it is weird that the grip safety, that JB didn't include in the original design, and is even more redundant today is still included on everyone's version.
The grip safety was a U.S. military requirement based on concerns of the horse mounted cavalry which was still a thing in the day. Browning distinctly disliked the idea but the customer wants what the customer wants. An original 1911 without the grip safety is a rare collector’s item.
@@stephenwalton9646 I know, what I don't know is why a century after horse cavalry mattered why this unnecessary feature is still forced on consumers, especially since gunsmiths are terrified to remove it, or install the aftermarket replacement back straps that permanently engaged it. I have a Gold Cup and a stainless Commander, I built my own IPSC Stock Class 1911 back in the 80's and have put together many in the years following. 95% of the time you are correct, you get what you pay for but if you're just starting out in the game there are cheaper options that will serve with distinction. The finest of those IMHO is the Tisas 1911's. I bought one because I'd heard some great things about them from some people I really respect so I picked up one of their 1911 A1 Service models. FORGED slide and frame, hammer forged barrel, fit, finish and machining was great. First thing I did was put a mix of ammo thru it including some of my handloads. 400 rounds later not one FTF and 3" groups at 50' were the norm, 375 bucks. I was so impressed I bought a Tank Commander model in 9mm. It came with a 4.25" RAMPED barrel, Novak Sights and a Commander hammer and beavertail, 425 out the door. Fantastic shooter. I just bought another Service model and used it for a custom build, I couldn't buy the frame and slide from Caspian for what I paid for it. All accessories purchased fit and functioned perfectly. Minor fitting and polishing, a little Cerakote and what a shooter. Those 1911's have to be the best bang for the buck out there, they have many models to choose from and everyone I know who have purchased one have just been amazed at the price/quality/function of these handguns.
I am sorry, but 9 mm is a candy ass cartridge and has no business in a 1911. The only way 9 mm is effective is if you very rapidly peel off 15 rounds of Underwood Extreme Defense. A 1911 can’t hold enough rounds. In 2024 a 1911 should be chambered in 10 mm or maybe .45 ACP. If you want a mini round buy a Glock!
Hammer bite, not slide
i learned combat pistol on a colt combat commander. i have had the new striker fired pistols, the glocks, the sigs etc. i am going to stick with a Cosaint arms double stack carry pistol ..
I have a dbl eagle 10mmm,ni problems
no problems
You mentioned the RI 1911 in one line of dialogue. RI is the only maker of 1911 that comes 100% from the factory. It's plenty accurate and you're looking at $400. RI has done what Glock has. It made the parts interchangable without a gunsmith. Nothing worse than taking a buddy out to your range with a $5000 1911 that is so tight it takes 2000 rounds to mostly wear in. My favorite handgun is the RI 1911 GI in 9mm. No extras. Shoots where I want it. Takes any ammo a Glock will and it shoots so softly
So what is it that nobody is willing to say about the 1911? Everything you said is general knowledge. Another typical click bait tease!
New to the 1911 world, though mine is scaled down for .380. First impressions: Slim, compact, promises good carry. Operation completely different from the “usual” pistols we handle.
Why buy? Because there’s enough of them circulating it’s just a matter of time before I’ll have to handle one. I need to learn to use, clean, and shoot it before I “need” to.
Ironically, the most recent pistol I learned was a Glock 43X. Now I get to directly one of the oldest designs to one of the newest.
absolute CLICKBAIT.
you said absolutely nothing that hasn't already been said THOUSANDS of times.
Not "John Brown"... John Moses Browning.
Put some respect on his name, FFS.
The man should have his own National Holiday.
My 1911A1 is a old broke in parts gun. All different makers with some Wilson Combat parts. It runs perfect with quality magazines. It finally needed a new barrel so I put a Sig stainless in it. I'd be afraid of a brand new pistol! Might scratch it!
Nice informative video. But there's nothing that "nobody else is saying" or has said before.
Yeh, pretty stupid clickbait title. Why do RUclipsrs feel the need to cheapen their videos with that off-putting behavior? It's usually an instant "Do Not Recommend Channel" click for me.
@@harpsitardoYeah, now I'll keep an eye out for credibility in his future vids.
@harpsitardo In other words strike one.
Defensive 1911? Anything from SA, SIG, or S&W. Best HANDMADE boutique 1911? SA, SIG, or S&W, because you realize that so there's no reason to spend enough money to buy a decent used car on a pistol when current tech CNC machines have allowed the major companies to strike the perfect balance between range-toy and reliable.
The 1911, iconic, been around a long time and a beautiful weapon! BUT, there are a lot of calibers that ballistically outperform the 45 ACP, especially with the new modern bullets. yeah, I know died in the wool 1911 enthusiasts are going to hate on my post. so I'll say it now: stop whining!!!
Great video brother! I’m debating switching my carry from my USP 45 to a 1911 due to some medical issues. Maybe a follow up video with some of your current picks and philosophy of use. Keep up the outstanding content!
Thinking about coming conflict and what is needed. My thinking showed me ww1 technology is what I'm looking for.
I'm surprised that no one ever mentioned the reason why 1911 it's still the premiere go to gun today had a lot to do with shooting competitions. The bullseye pistolsmiths of the 50s rung out the accuracy potential of the platform (3 inches or better groups at 50 yards) and the rise of Jeff Cooper and the Southern California "Leathetslap" matches of the late 60s/early 70s gave rise to IPSC/tactical carry customs that had become the standard by how we judge 1911s today.
Never really looked at the Histpry pf 1911's. Havw onw, problem is it stovwpipes a lot. Funny, RDR2 features the Luger and one that looks like a 1911 labelled as an 1899.
Fun fact 45acp was actually made very specifically to exactly duplicate the ballistics of 45 Schofield. The other major change they made post WW1 to the 1911A1 that you missed was they lowered the cut for the ejection port to improve reliability and allow forva change in eject angle
The Army issued their pilots S&W .38s for some weird reason. As soon as I could I swapped a pallet of steaks (the guys on the ship hooked me up so it must have been for me 😅) for a Springfield 1911 and a thousand rounds. Loved that gun and late one night it saved my backside. Saint Browning did well! I found a Rock Island 1911 just like my RVN 1911 but with an ambidextrous safety. That is the only thing I think it ever needed. I’ve carried one for over 50 years- a Colt Commander today for convenience. The 9mm was a mistake only because the military always used FMJ ammo. With modern bullets the 9mm is plenty effective although I’m still partial to the .45. My only issue with Glocks is the different grip angle from the 1911. I like my immediate response weapons to all have identical feel and manual of arms. Once I found the correct ammo I’ve never had a 1911 let me down. That’s important when playing “you bet your life”
it's just so beautifully versatile! Time-proven for well over a hundred years - from war horse to self-defense, from hunting to top-end competitive sports shooting.
The aftermarket really caters to the 1911, too; to the point it's almost like Lego. Plus, it was the first self-loading pistol to become a really, really huge commercial hit, considering its long production until today and many years to come. And on top of all or that, it is visually appealing, as well.
I know everyone's a critic these days, and I don't want to seem like I'm trying to criticize your video in its entirety. This is an awesome video with wonderful historical and current information. That said, I completely understand that when you say, "we chose, we decided..." You mean American decision makers of that era. I would have said, "They chose, they decided..."
I know I'm nitpicking and arguing semantics, but it kinda bothered me for some reason. Anyway, it's a great informational video. Thank you very much. I learned a lot.
Had to edit my comment with "liked and subscribed." 😂
