Watching this now as mine just stopped working. Looks like I need to order the placement. I will also suspect water as we had a cover that while it covered everything somehow got very wet inside especially the grease catch. Ordering mine today. Thanks.
Thanks Abi! Glad you found this helpful!👍 sounds like you need to replace your igniter also. Mine was half full of water 💦 so my new one only cost $8 and it works great!
The main problem with MINE was not water but the button. Use a Clip lead to connect the spring to the battery. However, keeping the grill outside will get water into the igniter.
My igniter stopped working some time ago, and I bought a kit to replace it. No time to install, so for months I was using the butane lighter approach to lighting the grill, a real pain due to getting myself all greasy removing the grills and heat plates each time to get to the burners. Finally got around to cleaning and fixing the grill yesterday.. Cleaned out all the old burned grease and crud (I scrape and scrape and then vacuum it all out with my shop vac).. and then got my kit ready. When I realized that with my particular grill it was going to be a bitch to take the main burner out to replace the wiring, I took a minute to double check the battery compartment. Looked like the contact for the negative side of the battery (the contact inside the igniter box) was kind of dull. The way I cleaned it was to cut a thin strip of course sandpaper and wrap it lengthwise around the eraser end of a pencil, stuck it in the battery tube and rubbed away until the contact was all bright and shiny. Installed a fresh AA battery and voile: Working igniter! I also ordered a set of stainless heat plates to replace my rusted-out set, and so my grill will be just like new! Hope this helps some of you avoid messing with new igniters and wires.
I think I was able to get to mine without taking the grill apart. But if it’s packed in there like my moms was we had to remove some panels on the grill to get to hers
yes each grill will be different, you have to check your manual to your grill so you know which replacement one to get, some grills burners then others and the placement and size is different so you will have to find the exact correct replacement one
Recently i had to replace on on a natural gas heater. I called everywhere trying to find one in stock. I guess they will blame no electric igniters on the bat crap fever too. I needed a single igniter but found a quad igniter. There are 3 specialty grill shops within 3 miles and none had igniters in stock. True value had the quad. I made some modifications to the heater in order to install the igniter. If you are forced to use a multiple igniting switch and only need one or two terminals be sure to install an insulated wire on to the other terminals and take them to ground. If you dont the spark will jump from termial to terminal and the switch wont work for you. Dont bother trying to put insulated blade or pin terminals on there to keep from arcing. They will arc thru tap e hot glue and your hand. Just find a good ground source use a self tapping screw and a tiny washer crimp however many y or o terminals on the wires attached to the terminals not needed and ground them to the frame of whatever the igniter is being installed on.
@@jamiewagner you bet cha. Warning if you arent used to getting zapped dont have your hands near that sucker until its got the leads and is grounded when that buttons pressed. Im an electrician so anything under 277v is cool with me but ive made disposable cameras caps zap folks and they pissed themselves. Some igniters actually ground to the chasis its attached to by a copper band around the neck of the igniter. If thats the case when you put the battery holder and button part through the hole in the frame then snug it down with the plastic nut you may or may not have to griund any extra contacts for the igniter module. Install. Connect the igniter lead and push the plug button. If it sparks and you dont hear load soarking under the console you may be set. If you hear sparking look under if you see blue arcs jumping from terminal to terminal then you will need to install another wire per contact and ground them. Hope this helps
you know hwat, that's a good I dea and yeah I'm sure you could make this waterproof which is what the menufacture should have already done for us, but If I really wanted to yes I could seal it and waterproof it
probably make sure your grill is always covered when not in use. It's likely the water enters through the button housing and makes its way through the battery housing to the interior of the unit. Although the rubber button itself is removable, so you might be able to apply some kind of waterproof gunk to the inner threads up where the button is seated.
My grill is only like 4 months old and it all of a sudden stopped working, the igniter I mean. I replaced the battery, nothing. Now I'm going to try this for mine, but it's only 4 ish months old!! damn. Probably heavy rain is what did it. Hope I can find a replacement pulse igniter
Yeah this is probably what’s wrong. I think I put a link to amazon where I got mine in the description of this video, or you could just find one wherever you shop, be sure to get the exact one because they have different ones.
@@thebigzippo the cover is fine! I think it was trapping moisture INSIDE and thus corroding the igniter. Either way, I now just keep my grill in the garage
My igniter stays on - I have to unscrew it for the spark to stop, So I got a new one and it does exactly the same thing!! it is an Onlyfire 14421 Spark Generator

yeah good luck with your new one!
Thank you this is exactly the information that I needed!!
You’re very welcome I hope you make out OK with your igniter I guess I should say your new one
How do these work?? I noticed that I don't need two sides to complete the circuit, just one wire will arc to metal on the grill
no idea, I just replaced it
First!!! Also this really helped me out with my grill igniter because mine hasn’t been working for some time now.
Thanks Abi! Glad you found this helpful!👍 sounds like you need to replace your igniter also. Mine was half full of water 💦 so my new one only cost $8 and it works great!
Jamie Wagner Yeah, I picked one up from Lowes the other day for like $10.
Thanks for the video! Though I was hoping to see it taken apart just a bit more
sorry Next time I will take it apart!
Thanks, mine is 3 years new and it quit. I changed battery, used Deoxit. Still no clicking or spark.
yep! check on amazon you will probably find exactly what you need

Thanks for the tip I will try it sometime

I can’t get mine out. Thanks for the tip on the pencil/sand paper
You're a really practical web video; could not make it without ya!

I cannot get mine out! It’s to big! Any hints. There’s a bar under it and one behind it. 😳
yeah it's tricky to get out
Jamie Wagner so how do I get it out. Do I need to take the grill apart?
I think I was able to get to mine without taking the grill apart. But if it’s packed in there like my moms was we had to remove some panels on the grill to get to hers
So how do you identify the correct one? Is there a model # on it? How do you dissemble it? More questions then answers with this video.

Hey, thanks for your help.
Happy to help
Awesome job! Do you happen to know what is the difference of 4q and 5q pulse igniter model dhl-128?
I don't
Probably for a 4 burner vs a 5 burner grill

So. Is there a way to make them water proof. So this doesn't keep happening?

Hi bud. I got a 6 burner igniter module and replaced it with a new one. Does it matter if the lead plugs get jumbled up to whichever socket?
No it should not
As long as there are as many plugs as you have burners that is

@@jamiewagner Are they all pretty much the same for different brand grills? Mine's a monument
depends on how many burners, some have more than others and some are different styles
You should probably also find a replacement grill cover. Nome sane?
@@thebigzippo the cover is fine! I think it was trapping moisture INSIDE and thus corroding the igniter. Either way, I now just keep my grill in the garage
How do I get to where you’re at?
NIce video, well said....thanks bud
Thanks for watching!
I have two wires does it matter which wire is connected to the ignitor i just replaced my ignitor
you should place the wires in the correct openings on the new igniter if your grill has more than one igniter wire.
The battery may be backwards. Diagram showed proper orientation and when I installed the battery in the correct orientation ....... viola!!
awesome!
Sometimes the simplest solution wipes out an imagined bigger problem.
U won't get sparks without being hooked to grille. Metal is required to make up the ground circuit
thanks for the info mike!

Hey nice video
Hey thanks! The igniter was completely shot!!
So I already know the igniter doesn't work, and your video does nothing to fix the igniter!
Yeah sorry it’s best to replace it with a new one
wow, great video , stupid viewers. The igniter won,t change itself.
