FINALLY, a BJJ instructor who recognizes that motor tasks are best taught through motor practice, not through talking and watching. So many instructors say watch me watch me and don't let you work through it physically, even when you are not doing it right. They stop you and you have to watch them. Big difference between a Bjj black belt/red belt and a master instructor. Obrigado Rorion!!!!!!!
just amazing...i cant express how much it helps when you have a teacher that will do just what they were saying...to have your teacher show you how to do it and walk through it with you 100% and not just tell you...will up your game so fast...the gym that i last went to had white belts beating blue belts that were visiting from other schools and holding their own aginst fresh purple belts too...all because of the same style teaching they were talking about in this video
As soon as the guy started telling the blindfolded guy directions. It came to me, that he could just grab his hand and lead him over there. But it's an excellent demostration and it's a great analogy of how to teach someone. You Show them, you don't Tell them.
Because almost no one knows about Oswaldo Fadda or his master Luis Franca.(student of Mitsuyo Maeda) outside of Brazil. The Gracies are great martial artists, but they are also great businessmen and know how to market themselves. The best example is the creation of the UFC by Rorion Gracie. No one from the Franca/Fadda lineage has marketed their lineage (at least outside of Brazil) as greatly as the Gracies have. I first heard of the Gracies almost 20 years ago, Franca & Fadda only 2 years ago.
@nerdswers the academy has the best tuition anywhere. No other academy has such a rigorous and prolonged instructor teaching program.Ive been training for 15 yrs and in both the states and europe. Also ,im not affiliated to the gracies at all.Im a college lecturer in biomechanics and recognise ggod teaching when I see it.
I came up in the era when instructors used fear and intimidation during classes and all it did was scare the crap out of the student and they either quit or just tried to survive the class but retained nothing . Once I went out on my own I went the other way and just kept things relaxed and fluid, always trying to find ways to actually help my students LEARN. Strange how that wasn't common back then . At least not at the schools I went to
Thankyou for sharing this invaluable lesson this is a great insight for all practioner and teachers of all martial art to view this video and learn from it
@ouska36 All of helio's brothers have the red belt (10th degree). Rorion also has a red belt though, (9th degree). It is the highest possible belt in bjj nowadays. Since the 10th degree is reserved for the founders.
@@yevgeniyzharinov7473 it wouldn't have even made it outside Brazil because the popularity of bjj was due entirely to the UFC which rorion created, without the UFC there was no mma and therefore no bjj outside Brazil.
One on one relationship is very important. In the military, I moved around a lot and trained with many different instructors at different schools. Now I am out of the military and tried to go to a new school (I won't mentions the name or affiliate). I never felt like I was part of the "family". It seemed like the instructor was only interested in his competetive fighters. Needless to say, I am no longer a student at that school. You must make your students feel like they are part of the family.
An explanation is a hell of a thing. There are so many ways it can go wrong, and so few ways to go right. There are heuristic people, there are axiomatic people; and there is a bit of creepy transactional analysis to figure out who is talking to whom. Also, an explanation is always an inherently unfair situation where one person with a monopoly on knowledge gets to dictate rules to a student. And students that feel bullied don't learn. Ever. Much respect for Rorion's focus on pragmatism.
The thing I love about the Gracie's and all Latin American people as they make you feel like family from the get-go I'm in using Gracie University for a while and working as well on the diet plan is good stuff of the coolest thing is having these totally sweet kind gentleman who help you learn about something and can make it talk very well my favorite Gracie instructor will always be my hero #BrianOrtega or #tcity the rest of the Gracie family I love and enjoy learning from them #gu #Graciediet #bbs #rg #btcmo #emtg you. Guys and girls rock
@vmntmn thats a far drive to make daily, or even every other day. specially with school and what not. im gonna assume youre gonna be a freshmen but either way, school might get overwhelming and might interrupt your lessons. but good luck to you. i trained with these guys and theyre really good at what they do. miss them.
i actually went to their website to look that up afterwards, but never came back to correct myself. i guess you really need to put a lot of time into a red belt. like the majority of a lifetime:P
Rorion needs to grow his bigode back! That shit was magnum pi-esque! Rorion had a mustache so powerful Sargento Fahur should make him honorary sheriff of all Brazil!😮
no rorion is the only of helio's sons to have a red belt..rorions cousin the late carlson gracie had a red belt..but most of helio's sons have a red and black belt..it's half and half..i know atleast rickson royler and relson have red and black belts..i dont think royce has gotten one yet but i could be mistaken..but rorion is the only red belt of helio's sons although im sure they all will someday..i cant really think of someone more deserving of it than rickson, so we'll see
Yes, because trying to change people lives, to help better and build the confidence in as many people as they can isn't that deep. They should just calm down and act like its nothing.
@Roortoker420 there are no living 10th dans, only 9th dans and rorion is one along with about 20 or so more.Carlos gracie has been dead for nearly 20 years!
Hmm.... Notice they said the trick is making the student believe he's doing it perfectly.... This fits with their whole setup and what people think of them...
I'm not an apologist but I will tell you this so you don't miss the point; this is an excerpt from the ICP. The point here is to have students that might otherwise be discouraged by a lack of understanding or inability to see a technique through from beginning to end, experience the success that comes with perfect execution so they can have a vision of what mastery of the technique will bear them, and in turn fuel their enthusiasm to pursue it. The caveat, that is not demonstrated here, being that the student will be given successive opportunities to improve his/her technique by pressure testing it against opponents of varying skill levels at gradually increasing intensity levels in isolation and in combination with all the other techniques until it is ultimately mastered!

wish all instructors were this serious about teaching
Sad but true
amazed by how dedicated and insightful the Gracies are... fantastic tips for teaching
Amazing!!! Said it before & I'll say it again true legends of the martial arts!
I love their passion for teaching.

this is awesome and it applies not only as a teaching technique, but as a leadership tool. Life lesson, for sure!

I continue to b impressed at the high level of knowledge u have on jiujitsu and teaching
I can only wish that some day I become as an amazing instructor as the Gracies!!
Love RORION and his vision! Everybody awes to Him and Great Helio.

AMAZING!! This video just solidified why I want to be a Gracie Instructor. Thank you!
Did you get there, my friend?

amazing as always.
I wish there were better opportunities for learning BJJ here in Germany.

Awesome vid for future insructors. Its one thing to know a move and a dif thing to teach it to someone else

I wish teachers in other fields would utilize these methods.
actually if it wasnt for rorion, nobody outside brazil would know about bjj.
Exemplary Brazilian Family
I'm sure it would spread even without him.

An example of not overexplaining followed by an overexplanation of overexplaining

the Gracie family is so humble, and nice, and wonderful, I think. Love them very much.
Well not humble xd
Say what you want about percieved arrogance or smugness. The Gracies bring a passion for teaching their art, That means a lot.
This can be applied to all types of learning environments outside of jiu jitsu.

This is exactly how I feel. Apart from my favourite teachers being Rener, Ryron and Rorion.
Teaching how to teach. THAT is TRUE martial arts.
This is a class teaching the teachers.
Thank you thank you thank you! Sometimes instructors forget what it feels like to be a beginner in a "new" martial art.
@vmntmn thats a far drive to make daily, or even every other day. specially with school and what not. im gonna assume youre gonna be a freshmen but either way, school might get overwhelming and might interrupt your lessons. but good luck to you. i trained with these guys and theyre really good at what they do. miss them.
Rener became a baby once again!
Histoic moments people will remeber for ever look how they was writibng ❤❤
@nerdswers You do realize this specific video is from a class used to certify instructors and teach them the best way to teach GJJ right?
Rorion holds a higher belt than hickson but is half the fighter and I have met hickson on two occasions and he is a great man.
@Ouska36
No he's the only tenth degree red belt, carlos gracie, and also grandmaster fransico mansur are red belts. Dur
@gunfighterdrummer cause thats the top belt...white,blue,purp,brown,black,black/red,red
i actually went to their website to look that up afterwards, but never came back to correct myself. i guess you really need to put a lot of time into a red belt. like the majority of a lifetime:P
great video guys keep up the good work
i hope i get into UCLA for college next year so i can drive to torrence to train with these amazing guys! too bad i live in the bay area atm...=[
10 years later... what happened? 😂
Dude i wish i could train with you guys.. =( i hate that i live in NorCal....
Wow... Is this a JJ class or a test for listening skills!?
Valuable information on the mat and off.
Average Joe, you are totally right. I spent years doing a traditional art, but felt during that time, I was never part of the family.
Worldclass! Thank you! Take care!
3:25 Kimo now trains in GracieAcademy? jejjeje :P
This is so great!
@bnsaints - You have missed the point. As an instructional technique, this is great for any physical skill.
I love how all these gracies talk the same
How old is Rorion here? He looks and moves very youthfully. :)
Rorion needs to grow his bigode back! That shit was magnum pi-esque!
Rorion had a mustache so powerful Sargento Fahur should make him honorary sheriff of all Brazil!😮
Brazilian jiu jitsu best fighting system ever.
the gracie's are one of the best fighters in the world.
Was he seriously like I'm a red belt, give your fucking gatorade? goddamn
u seem like you respect rickson a lot so y do u mispell his name? just wondered
@sn1kzZe Renzo Gracie has an affiliate school somewhere in Israel. Go to his website and email him for contact information to the instructor.
The Gracie family really has it together! Top notch!

Great video, I wanna learn Ju Jitsu...
i like this philosophy a lot.
10th degree Red Belts are reserved for the grandmasters. Rorion will probably get his in like 10 years.
There will be our art is spreading. You can begin your own club and come to the States to train.
Very nice, thank you
Gracie bird box challenge. These guys always do it before it is cool. True hipsters.
Fantastic!
This is how I learn everything
@xRobinson777x Oh my bad i always thought red was lower then brown. hehehe should of googled it.
no rorion is the only of helio's sons to have a red belt..rorions cousin the late carlson gracie had a red belt..but most of helio's sons have a red and black belt..it's half and half..i know atleast rickson royler and relson have red and black belts..i dont think royce has gotten one yet but i could be mistaken..but rorion is the only red belt of helio's sons although im sure they all will someday..i cant really think of someone more deserving of it than rickson, so we'll see
Why don't you? Schools everywhere or even online.
Good tips there. Hopefully the instructor-to-be wasn't too frustrated by being used to demonstrate an inferior method of leading someone around. ;)
what about fadda.. why always gracie and gracie ...
@gunfighterdrummer Few people hold a 9th degree red belt
damn, royce and rickson not even on 9th degrees?
Why is he wearing a Red Belt?
gunfighterdrummer red belt is higher then black belt in bjj
omg guys, sort out the sound! keep it real!
i shall do something amazing, and will receive a 10th degree. no one will stop, no one can stop me, i shall succeed where others have failed.
@Mr4433 he was joking
around 60 yrs old
totally agree my friend :)
Amazing
the perfect adjustment ;)
Yes, because trying to change people lives, to help better and build the confidence in as many people as they can isn't that deep. They should just calm down and act like its nothing.
rorion just wanted to make a name for bjj,he didnt disrespect benny,it was a challenge

I wish I could pay a shit load of money and just sit there and listen to a bunch of salesman.
You'd probably learn a few things.
good philosophy.
its completly wrong what you gracie family says.. its not only gracie that found bjj.. fadda is a part of it , dont disrespect the man...
Jiu-jitsu 👍
