The 4 Elements of Jiu-Jitsu

  • Ryron takes us to school and breaks down the four elements of jiu-jitsu unlike ever before!
    1. Defend
    a. Big - Avoid/defend the positions and moves where the attack can begin.
    b. Small - Keep your opponent from completing what they have started.
    c. Deep - Defensive options for when you are in a deep submission.
    2. Escape
    a. Accept - Escape when the opportunity is perfect.
    b. Create - Use a combination of techniques to escape.
    c. Force - Use a combination of technique, surprise, speed and explosiveness to create space.
    3. Control
    a. Closed - A control that is more fixed - focusing on grips and tightness.
    b. Open - Connected but not attached, focused on balance, pressure and using gravity.
    c. Dynamic - Using the threat of submissions and strikes to control.
    4. Submit
    a. Accept - When you accept the mistake that your opponent makes.
    b. Create - Using technique to create an over-reaction from your opponent.
    c. Force - Making your opponent submit by any means necessary.
For a more enjoyable and sustainable jiu-jitsu journey, focus on the “As” and “Bs” under each element for the first 3-4 years, and then begin to explore the “Cs.”
Invest more time learning to defend big and small positions and escaping will come more naturally.
Spend more time controlling and submissions will appear more often.
Do more of what you don’t want to get more of what you do want.
In case you forget, here is the t-shirt to help you remember: secure.gracieacademy.com/categ...

Hi, Ryron! I am your big fan in surviving aspect. ❤ You are absolutely right. It works, everything you constantly say and keep saying about surviving system it definitely works. It has made my jiu jitsu more comfortable, interesting. You let me look at bjj from a different angle, I am so grateful to you 🙏 The majority of guys, to my mind, don't see the deepness of real jiu jitsu, the only thing they are chasing is submission by means of constant dominating from top, fearing to fall and end up on bottom position where I like to be as it gives you confidence and opens you so many opportunities to escape, then control and finally submit. And be honest , the score itself and losing points do not matter for me. First is jiu jitsu and then competition. From this point of view Gracie jiu jitsu is unique. Once again, thank you Ryron. And best regards from Russia. Raul G.N 43 years old 🤝

I just returned to the trainings today after a 3 weeks vacation where I didn’t train BJJ but I meditated about it and about this video in particular. My instructor said I trained as if I had been training daily while away. I now realize how important it is to have the head in the right place. As much as building muscle memory and learning techniques. Thank you

This advice is super helpful for anyone at any level. I love the mindset that Rorion, Ryron and Rener present to world. Focusing on each aspect individually will make you better in Jiu Jitsu as a whole. I see the four categories as belt colors. Defend is white belt. Escape is blue. Control is purple and Submit is brown. Even though, you can incorporate each of the phases at any belt level. Ryron’s advice to spend time in each category is so underutilized. A lot of the advice spoken out there is focused on escapes and submissions because that is the most exciting, but without defense and control, escapes and submissions are not possible. We need to remember Jiu Jitsu is a complete system including mindset. Thank you professor Ryron for the advice and work that you and your family put into Jiu Jitsu as a whole.

After watching this, the main points for me were the "accepting" position point and to be more patient. I keep making (the same) mistakes because i go into a "panic" mode and get caught into an even worse position. I will try to remember and execute the DECS process while I'm training.

Meditation is something i am exploring now. Watching a video and meditation allows time to thinking it thru and believing in it. Slowly seeing me step by step doing it. Then comes drill time. Physically doing it step by step over and over. I was in class and duing the arm bar attempt on me i instinctively caught the leg going over my head to place it under my head like hener shows in part one and i couldn't believe how it just happened without thinking but i mediated and drilled it. Gracie jui jitsu is amazing.

    --
This content is really deep and touches on the conceptual roots of Jiu-Jitsu. And this is even more alarming if we look at the advancement of sports jiu-jitsu (which is also good for the sport) at the expense of concepts like learning to think about pressure, perseverance, calm and other skills that Jiu-Jitsu helps develop . Many thanks for sharing! It truly put me to rethink my Jiu-Jitsu practice and change my mind set for it.

i didn't do any classes before but it makes a lot of sence for me, i get all my bjj info on youtube, and i have to say that is the best way to go, it's not about submitting, it's about controlling the storm, the storm have to pass, by doing that is to wait until the storm calms, and just there i think you create more fear by exhausting your opponent, and then just there and then you will catch your opponent off guard when his energy are drained and yours remained stable, Great lesson Ryron

  • @Rilasis

Great video. I think I personally have worked pretty hard at the "Big" defense concept but not enough at the "Small". I've been trying to work out of bad positions lately without letting my opponents sinking in submissions. It's pretty exhilarating really because even white belts or brand new people can choke you if you let them wrap your arms around their neck, but like you said, you don't get much out of it if you try to burst out and escape as soon as they get you in a bad position. Good stuff to think about.

I love the passive vs active idea. It means a lot for me at this point in my training being naturally passive and only 70 kg . I’m naturally more conditioned and happily confident to the passive sides of this chart. While still a little slow on the throttle when the opportunity arises. I’ve been wondering how the smaller guy theory defeats the bigger stronger opponent works at times lately. But I can see from this that action at the right time will help me become a more fuller rounded Jiu-Jitsu guy. 7.5
years in and half way though purple belt already and I started training at 38yrs old. Now I’m 45 and am beginning to really understand. Thanks great lesson
