Love the part how Rener was so impatient about teaching patience and interrupted his brother a few times. 😂 Great duo! Love these guys!

I was once visiting them to train in Torrance and was allowed to go to lunch with them ryron took me back home from the restaurant. He ended up in a full race drive against his brother when their cars were next to each other at the red light.

As a psychotherapist dealing with couples frequently in 'control mode', I was delighted by the analogy and in fact how applicable the entire video was to conflicting couples. Beautiful job guys!

I am only a white belt so have never thought of defending this way. Brilliant mindset change to be patient when escaping. I used to try my hardest to throw them off side control. Thanks guys

Wow this is so good and true. I realized this at training just yesterday morning, I was so relaxed and not rigid and not panicking which created so many opportunities for escapes and submissions. I’m usually extremely gassed after rolls but I was not this time. It forced me to use more technique instead of brute force and also eased my mind to accept the position I was not “stuck in” but was “in” at that time. Thank you so much guys for bringing to light this understanding of why this was working for me. 😁👍🏾

I'm drilling this over and over! I want to try baiting people into side control, then pulling this on them. It will save me the trouble of having to pass their guard.

I enjoy videos on techniques. I appreciate videos on concepts (technical or mechanical) even more. But, this! This is like a mindset or approach to self-defense. It makes total sense, and I can definitely see these feelings and urges at play internally. This video series really brings to light the old saying, “He who conquers others is strong; He who conquers himself is mighty” (Lao Tzu).

I'm so happy that I ran into this series so early on my bjj journey (couple of months in currently). This totally changed the way I look at things. It feels really "boring" to start by learning this patient defense without yet knowing the techniques required to capitalize on the opportunities that open up but now I feel like I'm willing to make the investment even if it takes years.

Oh my god . I was surprised to hear the word patience. This is what Jungian psychologist point out when you face a problem,. Patience is also stressed in religious teachings. I was actually overthrilled to hear this word from you , because I've tried it in a bunch of different ways and it really worked.

I appreciate videos, like this, which focus on the bigger picture of rolls. The concept of a static defense being an interim tactic calculated towards a better outcome instead of a loss was enlightening. I'd like to see the concept expanded more towards to the no-gi environment, where the pace seems quicker. But, hell, this is only part 2/4. Maybe they did that. I'm going to check out the other videos for sure.

How do we deal with this when their control puts you in a painful or just uncomfortable spot? I train with a lot of judoka and wrestlers, and generally am the smallest guy on the mats, do I just sit tight and accept the suck when they're doing something like crossfacing me or putting all of their weight in controlling me and having lots of pressure?
