  • Pretty straightforward procedure and actually very simple. My procedure does not show you how to check the fluid level it shows you how to refill it ,if it is completely empty. Or you want to change the transmission fluid in your Jeep compass jeep patriot and the drain and fill procedure will be the same for the Pt Cruiser with a manual transmission and not an automatic transmission this covers years 2007 to 2017 including 2008 Jeep compass 2009 Jeep compass 2010 Jeep compass 2012 Jeep compass 2011 Jeep compass 2013 Jeep compass 2014 Jeep compass 2015 jeep compass 2016 jeep compass 2017 Jeep Compass and the 2008 Jeep patriot 2009 Jeep patriot 2010 Jeep patriot 2011 Jeep patriot 2012 Jeep patriot 2013 Jeep patriot 2014 Jeep patriot 2015 jeep patriot 2016 jeep patriot 2017 Jeep Patriot

    Thanks for posting this video, it sure helped. Made it very easy to do. A lot of people recommend using AMsoil Synchromesh oil instead of ATF+4. My transmission was quite noisy and knotchy shifting. I decided to use up the oil that I had laying around: 500 ml Royal Purple Synchromesh, 1l Honda transmission fluid (almost like water), 1l Lucas Transmission Fix (quite heavy weight) and topped off with ATX. The transmission shifts great and runs super quiet. Just have to see how it'll do in cold weather.

    So obviously, check the fluid first before I start. But this is the original vehicle from 2016 it has not had any transmission service done, so is it safe to say I should drain and refill it with clean fluid?

  • @buzzin533

    I have an 09 compass with a 9 speed automatic transmission. Is this the same vehicle you serviced? I heard you mention it was a manual transmission, that's why I'm asking to be clear.

  • @mattp5083
    @mattp5083 3 года назад +2

    I used to have to top off my 2009 compass every now and then because it had a small leak. That was fixed. Anytime I removed the plug, fluid did not dump out. I recently had the fluid changed out and I noticed it was leaking slightly like it used to and I noticed the transmission acting like it used to. I figured I had to top it off again. When I removed the plug, this time fluid came dumping out everywhere. I'm assuming this means they really over filled it? I just let it drain from the plug side for a bit and then plugged it back up. Now my check engine is on...and when I accelerate too much in 3rd 4th and 5th it feels like it bogs out or the gears kind of slip on each other, but not like a clutch slip.

      You have a myriad of issues going on, but the bottom line is that your synchros are worn out and your transmission needs a rebuild.
      Problem one: fluid was too thin. The transmission manufacturer (Magna) spec'd the T355 for 75w80 GL-4 gear oil. Chrysler spec'd it for ATF +4 in order to consolidate their supply chain. ATF +4 is too thin for high temperatures. Proper replacement should be with a synchromesh GL-4 gear oil or Redline MTL.
      Problem two: Because the fluid is too thin, it led to premature wear of the synchros and seal leakage. This was initially why your leak started. Running low on fluid at all times only hurt things even worse.
      Problem three was that Chrysler advises filling the transmission to the intermediate fill hole, but Magna advises filling to the top fill hole for heavy duty applications such as Jeeps or 4x4s. These units were underfilled from the factory and remain underfilled unless you refill from the top drain plug. This was a cost cutting measure by Chrysler, as the T355 was used mostly in light duty FWD vehicles which didn't need the extra quart of fluid.
      Refilling from the intermediate fill hole as was done in this video (per Chrysler) will only net you 2.8 quarts of fluid. Refilling from the top drain hole (per the manufacturer) will net you 3.4 quarts, which is the proper level needed for these vehicles. If you have a Dodge Avenger or Chrysler 200 with this transmission, 2.8 quarts is perfectly fine. If you have a 4x4 SUV with this transmission, 3.4 quarts is a must.
      So your recent refill was done correctly, from the top fill hole. The extra 3/4 of a quart drained out of the intermediate fill hole when you opened it. It was not overfilled, you were just used to it being underfilled, and that's all on Chrysler. They don't care what happens to your Jeep longterm. If underfilling it to 2.8 quarts is sufficient enough to get them through the warranty period and it saves them hundreds of thousands of dollars a year, then 2.8 quarts will be the recommended fill.
      Unfortunately, since your transmission was already shot, draining the old fluid caused more harm than good. About the only thing you can do now to limp along until you can afford to rebuild it, would be to drain it once more, refill with a thick GL-4 gear oil (80w-90) and a bottle of Lucas Transmission Fix, and hope you get another year or two out of it.
      Once you get the transmission rebuilt, never use ATF +4 again for anything but the Power Steering reservoir, and never touch the intermediate fill hole plug on your gearbox. Drain from the bottom and refill from the top fill hole. I personally run Redline MTL, but others prefer Royal Purple Synchromax or Pennzoil Syncromesh. Refill should take anywhere from 3.3-3.5 quarts.
      I recommend doing research on Jeep forums or fluid-specific sites like bobistheoilguy.com to learn about the various ways you can prolong the life of your Jeep. Best thing to do is learn what the manufacturer specs for driveline components, and not Chrysler. (Chrysler merely assembles things and sells them. The transmission was manufactured by Magna, the engine by GEMA, the Power Steering system by Renault, etc.)
      In addition to the manual transmission stuff above, you should also look into running oil that GEMA actually spec'd for the 2.4 World Engines, which was 5w40 (severe duty, temp above 40°C) and 5w30 (temps below 40°C, light to moderate duty). The 5w20 that Chrysler specifies for this engine is far too thin for longevity purposes, but because it can help you get an extra .09 mpg fuel economy, it's what they recommend. CAFE is a bitch.

    Hello there. I have one simple question.
    I have a 2009 Manual Jeep patriot base models. When the sun shines on my dashboard I see the AWD option but I just don’t know how to activate it. There is no little lever I could pull up or any button on it. I basically just want to know if it can turn on or if it can’t. If it can, I want to know how to turn on the all wheel drive option on my jeep. Thank you.

    • @sharpcarco
      @sharpcarco  3 года назад

      Well is it a four-wheel-drive model?
      I don’t know if yours is four-wheel-drive or not I don’t even remember if they made a 2 Wheel Dr. version but more than likely it’s automatic four-wheel-drive if it is a 4 x 4 model.
      They make all dashboard layouts with all cut outs meaning that they all have the same instrument cluster layout underneath but doesn’t necessarily mean that actually has 4 x 4
      It’s been a while since I worked on one of them but it seems like if I remember correctly not all of them were 4 x 4 but even if that was the case it could just be automatic so there’s probably not a button lots of vehicles are made that way generally on the back of the vehicle it will say 4 x 4.
      Looking underneath the vehicle will tell you for certain if there’s axles in the back and there’s axles in the front it is definitely four-wheel-drive.
      If that makes sense and you figure it out you can always also look in your owners manual and that will tell you just about Any information that you could possibly need

    • @RockandrollNegro
      @RockandrollNegro 2 года назад

      If you have a Jeep Patriot base model, then you have FWD only. If there's no pull up lever in the center console, it's because you don't have 4x4 to activate. You see the 'AWD' on the dash because all models used the same dash. There is no bulb behind the 'AWD' icon, so it will never light up on your model like it will for, you know, people that actually have AWD.

    How often should you change your transmission oil on these range of vehicles? I just don’t think mine is running as smooth as I think it should and I’m wondering if this is the culprit. I’ve replaced all the other fluids I could think of that could effect the vehicle. I fully replaced the transmission and clutch in fall of 2019. Any ideas?

    • @RockandrollNegro
      @RockandrollNegro 2 года назад +1

      If using synthetic, you won't want to go over 25k miles. If using conventional, you won't want to go past 10-12k miles. If the shop refilled the transmission with the ATF +4 that Chrysler specs, then you're going to be rebuilding it again in a few years. Drain it and replace (from the top fill hole, not the intermediate fill hole like was shown in this video) with Redline MTL, then change it out every 20k miles. You can get a half a million miles on the original clutch and gearset if you just ignore what Chrysler recommends and listen to what the manufacturer recommends.

      Good question I don’t know the answer to that. Sorry wish I could be of some help

    • @RockandrollNegro
      @RockandrollNegro 2 года назад

      Jeep Patriots use ATF +4 for the power steering fluid. Mopar Power Steering Fluid can be used in an emergency, as a top-up, but the primary fill should be ATF +4. Maximum ratio is 10:1 (no more than one part Mopar Power Steering Fluid for 10 parts ATF +4).
      Mopar PS Fluid is basically ATF minus friction modifiers, and is a clear transparent fluid instead of bright red. Some vehicles power steering units work better without friction modifiers; the Jeep Patriot is not such a vehicle. The units used for the Compass/Patriot, Caliber/Nitro and Outlander/Peugot 4k all need a friction modifier to prevent premature wear to the intermediate shaft.
      If you have your power steering fluid replaced at a shop, make sure that they are using ATF +4 as the fill. The fluid in the reservoir will be red. If it's clear, then have them drain and fill it with the correct fluid. Most of the Jiffy Lube type establishments will have a system that relies on outdated technical service bulletins directing them to use Mopar Power Steering fluid, which is incorrect. That was a temporary advisory specific to the 2007-2009 models that experienced steering wheel lock at low speeds. Chrysler eventually replaced those units under recall and the Power Steering Fluid advisory was withdrawn; unfortunately most shops (even Mopar dealership shops) failed to receive the withdrawal.
