Uncle Buck: One of John Candy's Best!

  • 1989's Uncle Buck is arguably John Candy's second-best movie ever. John Hughes' Planes, Trains and Automobiles is probably the film he's most remembered for, and the director/star combo worked so well they re-teamed for Uncle Buck two years later. This family comedy was the biggest hit of Candy's career. Notably, it introduced the world to Macaulay Culkin, whose precocious performance led to Home Alone a year later. Looking back at the movie now, it's a too-often ignored classic, with a Candy performance that mixes humor, pathos, and even a touch of menace (aimed at the right people, of course) in a way only the late, great actor could. It's this month's John Hughes Revisited - written, edited and narrated by Matthew Hacienda.

Yeah, I think this was one of John Candy's best. You really start to feel for the guy. For me, it was when he was looking through the photo album and saw a wedding photo that was folded. He unfolded it, and saw that it was him in the pic and he was folded out of sight. Man, I really felt for him in that one, and I instantly started to dislike the wife/mother because no doubt that was her doing.

It is by far his BEST! He did some great ones, but this one was where he shared the stage with no one competing for full attention, he was the stand alone star, and absolutely owned it! That’s not a knock on the supporting cast, they were all great, but this was his film, and he owned it and absolutely killed it!

I'm 25 so it's a bit odd I can call this a childhood movie. My parents never watched it, I just loved watching Spaceballs in my mom's car and Macaulay Culkin since I watched home alone a lot as well. when I saw John candy on another cover back when itunes movies were more popular I bought it. And I watched the absolute hell out of that movie. Front to back, perfection. Even not seeing it in years by this point I can remember it super well. John, there are seldom people who have your pure raw chaotic energy but at the same time a face that instantly brings joy to everyone's face. Rest in peace John, died way way WAY too young.

The whole film is so lovable and sweet. Everything from the simple story to the heart on his sleeve Candy performance to the hip-hop and Chicago soul influence score and soundtrack, this is a hugely underrated classic. John Candy is an icon gone too soon and this and Planes, Trains and Automobiles are his magnum opuses. A must see if you’ve never seen it and a constant revisit for those of us who know all about this beautiful film.

I think a lesser actor would’ve made his characters annoying to the point of being hated. You can see how offensive and annoying his character might’ve came across to others in the movies, but you can also see his heart, his sincerity.

I once saw a TV version of Uncle Buck where they cut out the part where Buck releases Bug out his trunk and hits golf balls at him, but they kept in the scene where Buck crashes the party. So the last time the audience sees Bug, Buck is coming at him with a power drill and he's never seen or referenced again.
Really put a much darker tone to the earlier scene where Buck asks Bug, "Ever hear of a ritual killing?"

0:05. Let me just say how awesome it is you added that Water Tower in the intro. As an inspector of water storage tanks I can appreciate that. I own a piece of that tower. Was on the painting project in 2020 as soon as the mask mandates started. The city thought about applying “Save Ferris” back on the tower but didn’t own the rights and it would have costed them a pretty penny. Not many people know the water tower scene from the movie because it’s so short.
