I drove that Nevada highway to visit my father who lived in eastern Nevada at the time. If you see a sign saying "No Gas for 100 miles," this is not an exaggeration. You will pay more per gallon of fuel in these small towns, but you have no other choice.
If you are a member of Automobile Association of America (AAA) or have a roadside assistance subscription, they can either bring you fuel or tow your vehicle to the nearest fuel stop. Otherwise, you will need to call someone to bring fuel or to tow your vehicle. This is a consideration for long road trips, particularly while traversing sparsely populated areas. There are multiple stretches where you can go an hour or two without a single car passing by.
When on long road trips, I carry gallons of water and non-perishable food with me in case I have a breakdown in a remote area. It may be awhile before help can arrive.

First, some road trip safety hints: Pack several gallons of potable water for yourself and a few gallons water and some coolant for your car. Make sure you have some non-perishable food. And have a blanket -- the dessert can get very cold at night.
The high road to Taos is beautiful. Visit the church at Chimayo and visit some of the studios of the traditional weavers. At Cordova, stop at the galleries/studios of some of the Santos carvers. See the buffalo and buy some pottery at Picuris . If you're there on San Lorenzo day, the feast day dances are something to see. Stop at one of the wineries in the area. Make sure you get some cider, in season. While in Taos, have some blue corn enchiladas and sopapillas with honey at Rancho Plaza Grill or Antonio's.
If you do the high road, come back on what they call the low road, which runs along the Rio Grande. You need to take a rafting trip on the Rio Grande. There are some nice gentle half day trips that are family friendly. Also head up to Ghost Ranch to see where Georgia O'Keefe painted.

I grew up doing road trips across our country many many times. I driven from northern cali to Alabama so many times on many different routs...with my parents, ex husbands/2, with my sister, with my kuds & the dog & by myself multiple times which I quite enjoyed. Taking sude trips is so much fun, finding little towns with some great food & nice people. Just remember...if u r driving through the desert make sure to gas up, have water to drink & TURN YOUR AC OFF!!. Roll down the windows, put your hair in a pony tail, crank that music up & off you go. The rectangle burn marks you see on the side of the roads are what's left after your car catches fire & burns to the ground because you left your air conditioning on high! Your car can burn up people. Never drive thru a desert with the ac on it can save your life.

Every state has something wonderful about it because the diversity in this country is staggering. There are signs in Nevada to tell you how far to the next gas station. Growing up in the 1950s and 1960s, my brother and i went to summer camp near the Delaware Water Gap. However, our camps were technically in The Pocono Mountains, which are also close by. The Delaware Water Gap is called the Gateway to the Poconos. Pennsylvania is a very beautiful state with a lot of hidden gems of beauty and of historical importance. Pennsylvania has its name for William Penn, who settled Pennsylvania and for the never ending woodlands. It literally means Penns woods.

NOTHING beats the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The parkway beats Colorado in my estimation!
It's magical. It's part of the Appalachian Trail. The Appalachian Trail begins at Springer Mountain in the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest in Georgia and ends at the summit of Katahdin in Baxter State Park, Maine. The trail is about 2,200 miles long and passes through 14 states: I live near the part that runs through North Carolina, My favorite place to visit !

We drove the Hwy 50 Loneliest road in the US. It's the gap between Utah and Nevada's capitol, Carson City. It is the one and only time I've ever gotten car sick. The heat makes the road have waves going across it. We were so bored, we stopped for a dead animal on the side of the road to see what it was. However, Hwy 50 from Carson City to Placerville (40 miles east of Sacramento, California is some of the best sites with Lake Tahoe, little waterfalls after leaving Lake Tahoe and pine trees.

I have driven the "Million Dollar Highway" multiple times, and it is beautiful. But there is almost nowhere to stop, and some of those drop offs are insane. Often that white line is the edge of the cliff. And there are basically no guardrails, so if you aren't paying attention to the road, bad things WILL happen.

Every chance we got once the weather was nice, we'd pack up the car and head down to go tubing, fishing, hiking, etc. My health keeps me from such activities most of the time now but it's still a beautiful place to visit. I would also always recommend the Blue Ridge Parkway as a great scenic drive.. it also runs through multiple states so you can enjoy a lot of varied beauty along the way.

PCH is fabulous. But I have a stunning recollection of the over ocean highway to Florida. We were driving from Miami to Key West and we were over the ocean at night when a storm blew in. And the lightning would flash so bright that the entire ocean reflected the lightning. So you were driving in pitch black with pouring rain, we could only drive about 10 miles an hour because we didn’t want to drive off the road and into the ocean, and there were no rails where we were. Everything is pitch black, no street lights, we were just following the tail lights in front of us, and then suddenly everything flashes complete white the ocean is white -sky, ocean in all directions. Everything is blinding white, then instantly pitch black again. it was the weirdest surreal thing I’ve ever been in.

The loneliest road sounds just perfect for my Prius --can run for miles on 'no gas'. I remember stopping at the Big Rock Candy Mountains in New Mexico as a child. Amtrak takes a person through a lot of scenic routes ... and, doesn't require a driver. Personally, I'm from AK and I could see a lot of this just on the way from Anchorage to Denali Park.

Hi🙋from Tucson, Arizona ‼️ Well, I am in the southwest now, but I was born and raised in Sussex Co. where a portion of the "Old Mine Road" is and it follows the Delaware River. It is a beautiful place, unique, with a lot of history dating back to our early days as a colony. The Old Mine Road is or was, I haven't checked in awhile, but it was considered the oldest road in the country. The Delaware River itself has a lot of history as you probably already know. George Washington's historical crossing from Pennsylvania to N.J. (New Jersey) is probably the most well known around the world, I be would imagine. I may be wrong, but, yes, this part of the Old Mine Road in N.J. is beautiful country, along with the Delaware River. Canoed and rafted many times down the Delaware ‼️ Fun times‼️ Now I am older and am enjoying the sunny weather in Tucson. Been here almost 30 years now. But, yeah, this part of N.J. is my old stomping ground😊🙋 Thanks for your video....I am a new sub‼️☺️

It might take a while for one to pass, so you can also call AAA.
You can also hitch a ride with a truck driver to the next truck stop and see about paying someone to give you a ride back. At least that was my experience years back when I ran out of gas occasionally. Things might be less friendly these days.

Coal mines are still being used in West Virginia. It’s such a waste though as the coal is pretty much gone at this point and nobody really buys it anymore. Every state has switched to more efficient forms of fuel. Every miner has some form of black lung there or is hooked on some kind of drug. Black lung is caused by coal dust in the air. Coal dust is too big for a body to get rid of and it sticks around in the lungs. This causes all kinds of problems for people so causes infection points and eventually cancer.

I have been over all the western scenic byways. All of them, from the Arctic Ocean to both Baja and mainland Mexico. I ride motorcycles and hate traffic. You can't enjoy the scenery while dodging cars. So my views are biased.
66 is a tourist trap and mostly boring interstate. Blue Ridge too much traffic.
Hwy 50 is very cool. Thru the Great Basin Nat Park. Called The Big Empty. If you turn off 50 it gets really empty. 50 is the busiest hwy out there. Go ahead and lay down on the centerline and take a pic.
Going to the Sun, spectacular but go early, like before 6am.
Pacific Coast... skip south Calif. Way to much traffic. Do the Lost Coast.
Enter at Ferndale CA - Petrolia - Honeydew and come out thru Redwoods to 101 and north thru Oregon. Towards the upper half of OR you can't see the ocean for the houses. North of Vancouver WA it again is lovely old forests and logging towns along the coast onto the Olympic Península.
Best long road trips. 89 and 101 Mexico to Canada. 93 Los Vegas to Canada. 95 from Winnemucca to Canada
Boise ID thru Sun Valley and north. 20-75-93-12-95 The Grand Loop ... many variations. Weeks and weeks of stunning scenery.
My state. Very overlooked by tourism. Most tourist go to Colorado, thankfully. It's stunning here.

I know many of those farms. As a photographer I hate those wind generators. And yes it really looks like this. Not enhanced photos. The magic hour is just that gorgeous.

The only one of these drives that I haven't driven is the Old Mine Rd. The "loneliest highway" is not particularly scenic and doesn't belong on this list. The other 8 are all good choices. The worst omission is Beartooth Scenic Hwy from Red Lodge, MT to Yellowstone NP. Other shorter drives that are highly worth are the North Shore of Lake Superior in MN, Needles Highway, the Wildlife Loop, and Iron Mountain road, which can be driven as a loop in Custer State Park SD, the Road to Hana in Hawaii, and Monument Valley in AZ. There are many more, but those are some that I have driven and recommend.

Having done most of the PCH drive a few times it is stunning and worth a top place on this list, but how in the hell did the road to Hana in Hawaii not make this list?!!!

Driving through America really is the best thing you can do when you visit us. The more driving you do the more you will understand us. We are a driving culture. Don't just go to the major cities and major tourist areas. Get off the highway and see the backroads, the little towns of America are the best part of America. Not the big cities.

They didn’t include Alaska or Hawaii? Every region has beautiful scenery, but Alaska is on another level. It’s so grand that you barely believe it’s real. In the Lower 48 states, California is hard to beat for its diversity of beautiful scenery. There are good reasons why tourists come from all over the world. Don’t believe the haters.😉

If you run out of gas, you'd better hope you have AAA. If you're a member of AAA you call them and they will bring gas, tow you to somewhere, jump your battery, or bring you a new battery. I wouldn't ever
    let my membership expire,
