Always great to watch your videos. Attention to detail is key when rebuilding an engine. You sir, are a skilled craftsman. Looking forward the next update on this engine.
Another good one Pet. I feel like going out getting an old Ford 289 or 302 and just rebuilding on. Your lucky you have a machine shop close by. Not so easy down here in lockdown capitol of the planet. Lol stay well and safe 😊
Another great video. I'll sure be referring to these when I get around to building my lsx. I know you still go a bit to go with the studebaker. But you go ideas for what build is next?
I am really enjoying your engine rebuild videos, great job. I noticed you did not put the lock nuts back on the rod bolts unless in a later video you removed the pan and did that, were they not needed, I have seen and used those type of lock nuts before but never saw them on rod bolts before.
I have one question, why are the expansion plugs installed backwards? since no one else saw or did'nt notice it to ask. Thank You very much Pete for answering my question.
Hi, Thank you very much about videos. Very usefull :-) Need help. I have Oil Pump with loose Oil Strainer Pipe. Oil Strainer swings freely. Now Strainer turns to bottom and touches oil pan.Threads are seen just like in your video. I noticed that its not possible to turn pipe more to snug it up. I dont see that the pipe has conical threads. I dont understand how the pipe is fastened tight. Threads looks fine. Is the loctite threadlocker only solution in this case?
Hi Pete. Following this rebuild with glee like the rest of the world HOWEVER!!! A QUESTION? That haircut of yours is an escape from the norm. In Ireland we would consider that a short back and sides from the 50's and 60's. Are you getting into period with the car for the big first start? 😁😁😁😉😉👍
That is an excellent question. It actually is I'm sick of paying for haircuts. I still want to pay $1.50 every 2 weeks like it was when I was in the military. In this particular case it was a young girl cutting my hair and she screwed up so much I told her to stop cutting. I'll have to get it fixed until it grows in a bit.....but let's go with the period haircut for now...lol
Hey Pete, I'm in the process of rebuilding a 63 289. Where did you get the new pressure relief valve and spring? I also need the washer thing that goes between the cam gear and fuel pump eccentric, one of the tabs is broke off. Thanks, John
Yes, if you put down a t least a 3/16 bead it will press inwards and surround the holes. Too much and it will end up in the pan. You can go around the entire hole if you like, but I've never had a problem
Pete, thanks for putting these videos together. Would you put anything on rubber end gaskets for an oil pan? Right stuff on both sides or just under the rubber arc pieces? Thanks!
Excellent video, very educational, it never ceases to amaze with the expertise of a craftsman. Thank you.
Thank you Steve
Awesome video man! Very educational, this man is an expert! Keep up the good work Pete!
I'm trying, thanks my friend
Your education about engine assembly really appreciated!!!!!! Thank you very much!
Thank you my friend

Thanks so much....and I love the Maryann....she was hot....if I were on that island she'd be in trouble
Terrific as usual Pete. Love it when a plan comes together. Can't wait to see the new/old Studebaker engine fire back to life.
Thanks Bruce.....getting so close

I have a 2.0 turbo and a supercharged Buick 4.6 waiting

Those were just a stamped steel PAL nut. They do very little and I usually leave them off.
Thank you I was curious about that.
I have one question, why are the expansion plugs installed backwards? since no one else saw or did'nt notice it to ask. Thank You very much Pete for answering my question.
That is the way they came from the factory. It all has to do with the wall thickness

I would use a die and cut the threads deeper on the tube

Petes Garage Ha! Cheers Pete.
Hey Pete, am I wrong or you didn't set the oil pan gasket on the surface before pushing the oil pan in place?
The oil pan gasket is the black paper. I installed that in the previous video because it goes on before the cam cover.

Fairborn Studebaker (937) 878-1576
Use the ball head of a ball peen hammer works great to reverse the bolt hole protrusion on the oil pan
Great tip!
Any reason why you ran the bead of RTV around the outside of the oil pan bolts instead of on the inside? Or both sides?
Yes, if you put down a t least a 3/16 bead it will press inwards and surround the holes. Too much and it will end up in the pan. You can go around the entire hole if you like, but I've never had a problem

For the end pieces I cover both sides, especially if they are cork. For rubber one I usually just use hi-tack
You mentioned 30 ft./lbs torque for the oil pump cover bolts. Is that correct ?
According to the manual
thanks pete
Hey Pete, how much do you think it would cost to rebuild a 318 to stock specs (with as little of a bore out as possible)?
probably around $4-5k
hi
so what happens to the P jelly ?
It dissolves rapidly in the oil.
New Pete's!
Woo Hoo
Why petroleum gelly
Because it is thick and helps provide immediate suction to draw up the oil
okay thanks. I assume it wont form sludge when it come contact with fuel. or maybe it just dissolves along the way.
It dissolves almost immediately since it is a petroleum product
