I felt like such an important accident deserved a remake, so here’s “The Disaster of N72EX” remastered with new audio, better information, and more accurate animations. Also, I would like to express my deepest condolences to the families of those who have lost their loved ones on board the helicopter. 😢
I think you remade this video for views. You liked at comment on your last video which commended you for not feeling it necessary to mention who this tragedy impacted. “Basketball Tragedy” What changed??? That last comment got thousands of likes because people felt that your motivation for making the video was for educational purposes and not done just for clicks. Funny how millions of views can change things.... Disappointed!
Maybe Mr Bryant shouldn’t have been a pushy prick who fired multiple pilots over nonsense and forced his favorite to fly under severely compromised conditions.
Some of the responses to my comment are bizarre. Why are people so disgusting? If a tragic thing were to happen like this to your family, would you want someone to stay stupid shit like that? Also, in no way was I implying that anyone was less significant than the other.
@@joenyc i think what he was trying to say is with that bad weather conditions, they should've just chosen to drive. so the hurry part is referring to how its only a 30 min flight in bad conditions, when u could take the safer option which is driving, even though it takes 2 hours. u could just wake up earlier in the morning and drive. that's what i would've done.
@@joenyc A very common situation in charter flights with rich passengers is that they push the pilot to continue so they can make their schedule, against the pilot's better judgement. It's called "get there itis." Several times in my flying career I have chosen to do a 180 out of a bad situation, circle around for an hour to re-assess it, and sometimes choose an alternate field and land in better conditions. The LA police helicopters were not in a hurry that day.

Exactly, that’s what many people don’t understand about corporate aviation. You don’t depart because the ceilings are too low for a safe flight? Turns out your boss missed his meeting and you’re fired now. It would be great if we made the rich CEO’s and celebrities like this take an aeronautical decision making class so they can know the consequences of get-there-itis.
@Guy Incognito yup, and then if we do have a weather related emergency, I’m the one that gets in trouble with the FAA for it. Actually, knowing the kind of guy he was, I’m sure if Kobe fully knew the situation, he wouldn’t have chosen to fly that morning and put himself and his daughter and those other families at risk... They’re going to try and find a way to get them there, come hell or high water, before they break it to the client that their personal flight is delayed. Sadly, that CAN have deadly consequences.
I'm not sure I agree. PD choppers aren't generally used to transport people from A to B. Rather, they support units on the ground and must have excellent visibility to be effective at that. They can't fly much above 1000 feet to do so. A transport helo can.
My dad, an experienced flight instructor, used to call this “gotta-get-there-itis“. It’s the pressure to fly in poor conditions when the flight should be delayed/cancelled. He said it crashed more aircraft than anything else. Great video.

@downboogieb: We ALL have a “shelf life” an “expiration date “. All those on that helicopter 🚁 had an appointment TO KEEP...and each were ON TIME. Please, I am not trying to be insensitive here, but that is a REALITY. No matter how old, how rich/poor or how well known anyone is...we ALL have a DEATH APPOINTMENT CARD issued the day of our birth and the appointment will be KEPT and we will be ON TIME. What I pray is that they ALL had accepted JESUS. We may THINK we do NOT need HIM, but we can not afford to leave here without HIM. Death IS NOT THE END but the beginning of ETERNITY. If we have accepted JESUS, then we are safe in heaven with HIM and experiencing true rest and peace, but, on the other hand if we did NOT, there is NO REST or PEACE in hell. If a soul have been in hell for a BILLION years, it has NOT even started ETERNITY. GOD exist and so does heaven and hell. GOD is NOT in heaven playing games with us and we should take the wonderful message of JESUS more serious than we do. We are only PREPARED if we have invited CHRIST into our lives then WHEN death comes, we have NOTHING TO FEAR. We can say to death, like Clint Eastwood in one of his movies, “GO AHEAD, MAKE MY DAY”. Those 9 souls are in ETERNITY now, heaven or hell - I do NOT KNOW, but THIS MOMENT is your opportunity to run 🏃 to JESUS and ask HIM into your heart before it is too late. Next time you are riding a bike. Close your eyes. You may feel like you are turning when you are going straight. You may be turning while you feel you are driving straight. You will feel like you are going to crash when you are not. This is what spacial disorientation feels like.
Especially if you do it in a giant tour bus equipped with millions of dollars worth of fun shit to do. No reason for these celebrities to be in the air when they can ride in style and stay alive.
Having spent many many hours as a passenger with my father in a high performance small plane [a Mooney], I can attest to how easy it is to be disoriented as to up, down, left, or right when you can't see outside the plane. You have to keep your eye on your plane's instruments that tell you the plane's orientation and trust them. That didn't appear to happen here. It is simple to climb up and out of a low overcast, but you have to pay attention to the instruments.
Can you explain how becoming disoriented happens? I just can't imagine I'm sitting in my seat and can get so disoriented that I can't tell up from down.
@@lonib213 Certainly! Imagine that you can not see anything out the windows. Everything is white; that is what happens when you are flying in a cloud. There is nothing to look at to orient yourself. Then when you are flying and the pilot pulls back on the wheel, you will feel the G force pulling you down into your seat so you will think that you are going up ..... but if the pilot also turns the wheel one way or the other you will start to go down not up. The more the pilot pulls up the tighter the turn and the faster you go down in an ever tightening spiral. It is called a death spiral. A trained pilot will give a little opposite rudder to keep the nose actually going up to counter the downward movement. You can't tell any of this is happening from your own senses. Usually you figure this out by looking out the window, but if you can't see......
Ride a bicycle and close your eyes for an extended period of time. You will think you're pedaling straight but you'll probably be going In some random direction and feel very disoriented and off balance

All aircraft need to be treated as aircraft. This means recordings, black box, anything that can help, and a terrain alert system. Why in the world this wasn’t already required is beyond me.
I appreciate your comment, but a black box wouldn't have prevented this accident, if that's what you're suggesting. And if spatial disorientation is severe enough, a pilot may be unresponsive to external data, such as a terrain warning. This accident was caused by pilot error, and the core issue here is pilot competency.

I don’t know why, but as the flight got closer to crashing my heart started beating faster and the more anxious I got almost like I was on the flight knowing what was coming… RIP to all on board!
Hope they were resting their eyes / in an excited chat before the crash, at least it didnt frighten them before the tragic... at least it happened real quick without them realising it... RIP Kobe & those onboard. 😔
I'll never forget thinking to myself as I drove to work in Los Angeles that the fog was the worst I have ever seen. When I got to work I heard the bad news and I knew what that pilot was up against. RIP to all onboard.
I thank the people on here who's comment recognize all the passengers instead of saying RIP Kobe, Giana and everyone else like they were nobody. I imagine with Kobe's celebrity status the pilot felt he had to make the flight no matter what the weather was considering all most everything else was shut down due to the weather. Another fine job tfc, take care and stay safe.
You know what weren't shut down, though? The roads. He could have just made the sacrifice and taken a 2 hour drive. Unfortunately, that's not how insanely rich people operate... they get what they want, when they want it, with no questions asked... and this time, sadly, that wealthy impatience resulted in tragedy.
Absolutely senseless! The pilot knew the weather was bad, yet , he decided to keep flying. No money 💰 is worth sacrificing nine lives. This is shameful and pathetic. Rest In Peace and condolences to these folks relatives and friends!
I remember the day i realised Kobe was dead. That was my first trip to the USA, and I was in Orlando. I had just came back from a shopping day and then, when I get in the hotel I see the guards all crying, so I go to the Lounge and look at the tv, I just couldn't believe what I was watching... That was one of the saddest days of my life. May Kobe rest in piece, and all the other victims
I live in the area where he was told to hold before going Northwest on the 5, and the fog was THICK that morning, thick enough to discourage people from driving on the freeway, let alone fly a helicopter. You couldn't see fifty feet ahead. He was basically flying blind, he had to have been.
Trust me! If Kobe was gonna fly in “thick enough fog to discourage other people from driving on the freeway, let alone flying in a helicopter” with several other people including his own preteen daughter and another preteen girl who was with both her parents, he might as well have also locked his two younger daughters in a room with a convicted child molester! I’m sorry to sound like such a broken record, but you could see 5 miles ahead when the helicopter took off! But you couldn’t even see an inch ahead when it crashed!
Well done, very logically unpacked! I have flown 20k+ hours in fixed wing aircraft, mainly under VFR but a considerable amount of IFR as well. On first hearing of this I presumed the heli was operating under instrument flight rules but on further watching this it becomes very clear what took place. Generally speaking, heli's tend to be safer under marginal wx than fixed wing as the pilot can slow to a crawl and set down if he really needs to. Given the amount of built up area he was flying over, setting down to wait for better wx or wait for ground transport was not looking like a great option. The question remains; why did this pilot continue a flight in such atrocious wx and put himself between layers where disorientation becomes a certainty? Apparently the pilot felt (or put himself under) extreme pressure to complete a flight that was completely unsafe from the get-go. He painted himself into a corner and apparently had no plan "b". Collision with power lines and other obstructions would have been a huge hazard which may explain why he chose to climb. Either way, entry into IMC wx in a helo without supplemental stabilization and adequate training and equipment ends in disaster every time. I find it odd that it seems the ntsb went to great lengths looking for equipment failure or some other explanation than human error. I don't believe that they want the public to know that a multi million dollar aircraft with mega rich pax's on board can crash the same as a Cessna 150 when pushed past the pilot and machines limit.
I would love to hear a response from a helo pilot who has flown in conditions like these and lived to talk about it. Like just how deep is spatial disorientation? Not a pilot myself although I have flown on and worked on helos myself in the navy. I have an understanding about how they are supposed to work. I know the instruments are there to help you, but I have no clue just how disoriented this guy had to have been in this situation, and just how much of a potential killer vertigo can be up there.
Can i ask your opinion. Do u think in any way with what happened, that someone influenced the pilot to just pursue the unthinkable and dangerous? Like perhaps a mentality of never say no, "just proceed " attitude. ? No names mentioned here.
From an experienced rotary wing maintainer, simply stated, he flew it into the dirt. It isn't unusual for a pilot to lose orientation in poor visibility situations and sometimes they just ignore instruments and fly the aircraft into the earth.
So were the passengers on board terrified knowing they were going to crash during this descending? Or were they all just sitting there and boom, it happened so fast they had no time to be frantic and didn’t know what was about to happen?
@@danieller3450 Because of the G-forces of the turn it probably felt like they were climbing, considering how thick the fog was if anyone saw it coming they wouldn't have had time to scream.. But the fact that the Pilot ignored his most basic flight instruments is INSANE to me - Someone who flew Flight Sim 10 as a kid..... His Artificial horizon instrument could've saved all of their lives if the Pilot just paid attention to it...
Years ago I had the guy teaching me to fly. At one point the guy started laughing. I thought I was flying level and the guy said, look your almost on your side. Spacial disorientation is a weird experience. He taught me to watch the instruments because with the plane at its proper attitude, your Looking Over the Horizon and can't see the ground as a reference. I can't believe that a lot of Pilots don't train with instrumentation. Even if you're not certified, at least learn something about it because it's very important as we have seen.
He was IFR rated, so it is not that he wasn't familiar with flying IFR. He may however have been rusty as his company only allowed VFR flights. With spacial disorientation and no TAWS on board, he only had seconds to figure out what was going on before flying into terrain. No one knows what he was doing the seconds before. He could have been looking at a map, finding a frequency or been distracted with something, phone call from the back compartment or 1000 other things. People die every year glancing at their phone for a second, now imagine flying an airplane while being distracted...
reading your comment, I am kind of shocked to hear, that there are pilots who dont know how to use their intruments properly... but hey, I only ride a bicycle :)
@@las10plagas It is not necessarily that the pilot didn't know how to use his instruments. He was instrument rated, so he had passed the certification for IFR flights. But, when he became disoriented, and probably under a lot of pressure to deal with a weather situation that was quickly escalating, with a demanding passenger in the back, he probably just was distracted or zoned out for a few seconds. The problem with spacial disorientation is that if you are not looking at the instruments, and no one does that the entire time in a VFR flight, your body doesn't really tell you when you are getting into trouble. It is like flying into a mountain in a fog. There is no indication there is anything wrong until you literally hit something.
Pilots not looking at instruments is bizarre af to me. I'm no pilot but I'm looking at my instruments even when I'm flying in gta. You're flying in a huge fucking metal box which is not supposed to fly. Why is looking at instruments not the most important thing??
I felt like such an important accident deserved a remake, so here’s “The Disaster of N72EX” remastered with new audio, better information, and more accurate animations. Maybe Mr Bryant shouldn’t have been a pushy prick who fired multiple pilots over nonsense and forced his favorite to fly under severely compromised conditions.
A couple of parents died as well, and a coach. Very tragic.
Some of the responses to my comment are bizarre. Why are people so disgusting? If a tragic thing were to happen like this to your family, would you want someone to stay stupid shit like that? Also, in no way was I implying that anyone was less significant than the other.
@@chrisafp071 I disagree, that is a nasty thing to say.
"When you are in a hurry you are in danger." An aviation adage that applies to a lot of other things in life too.
i dont think it was implied that anyone was in a hurry

So either I lose my corporate flying job, or risk killing myself and others and getting violated by the FAA for it. Really a great outcomes there😀. I’d rather work in fast food than be a pilot for some asshole celebrity.

A pilot has got to be able to say he's reached his limits without any repercussions from anyone. Otherwise these types of accidents will happen.

True. If you can't tell someone to go to hell, you're in no position to negotiate.

It sounds like good pilots who can make the right call were fired by Bryant. Like seriously, firing a pilot for stopping for fuel is ludicrous.
@Nutaarsiassat 67 the key to flight safety is an honest and just reporting culture. When you fire pilots that value those things, disaster lurks
Proof when an experienced pilot makes decisions based on fear of failure or disappointing a celebrity creates a perfect storm of tragedy

Most of the time, for these pilots and chauffeurs, etc their job is to shut up and get the client where they want to go, because time is money...

I appreciate your comment, but a black box wouldn't have prevented this accident, if that's what you're suggesting.

This is one of those times you wish you could go back in time and say don't go. All I can think watching this is turn around, don't go that way. 😔
Seems like girl's basketball is a stupid thing to die for..
@@dianah.9718 Yes but I think it's a lot more complex than just basketball. They were building a future for a child.
I started making a story based off that thought, if we could go back and prevent celebrities from passing away, too bad I didn’t get far with it.
If I had to list 100 air crashes I could stop this one would not be in it, I'd much rather save 300 lives than 8.
Perhaps allowing a client to pick and choose pilots based on who he likes rather than their level of experience, gets you this.
Exactly
It's the opposite I think, he picked very experience pilot and a twin engine helicopter.
Possible, but I don't think Kobe had any doubts about everyone's safety when he made his choice.
@@RationalMinded he was not a pilot. Tragedy though.
I highly doubt he just chose anybody.
Very well said.
Shoulda been way better prepped and equipped for kobe mann🤦🏿♂️
I would love to hear a response from a helo pilot who has flown in conditions like these and lived to talk about it. Like just how deep is spatial disorientation? Not a pilot myself although I have flown on and worked on helos myself in the navy. I have an understanding about how they are supposed to work. I know the instruments are there to help you, but I have no clue just how disoriented this guy had to have been in this situation, and just how much of a potential killer vertigo can be up there.
@@Smacckz it’s not just about celebrity or whoever’s flying. The pilots want to live too. Everyone’s important when your in the sky man.
Well said.
@@OGPatriot03 his brain must've had a really bad day
Years ago I had the guy teaching me to fly.
@@redbaron6805 your'e right. but my comment was not related to the accident. I was just surprised :-P
Pilots not looking at instruments is bizarre af to me. I'm no pilot but I'm looking at my instruments even when I'm flying in gta. You're flying in a huge fucking metal box which is not supposed to fly. Why is looking at instruments not the most important thing??
RUclips really recommended this to me a day before their one year anniversary. Wow.
