3rd Group was built from guys who had been booted off their Teams or couldn’t perform for whatever reasons, but didn’t screw up bad enough to lose SF MOS status and sent back to the regular Army. Lots of guys who had been sent to S3AIR or other Battalion duties not on ODAs became senior NCOs on the newly-formed ODAs, who then were supposed to raise up new Q-Course graduates. A lot of the guys who had enough experience prior from Infantry, Ranger Regiment, LRSC, LRSD, Recon Platoons, E-5 and E-6 Combat Engineers, good Combat Medics, and some good dudes from other Groups recognized that 3rd Group was a hot mess. It was openly discussed at the time. 9/11 changed 3rd Group dramatically for the better in most ways.

From Australia, one of your best yet. Was unaware of Mr Miller prior, thank you for spending the time to dive deep. Listening straight through, I couldn't stop listening, feel even four hours isn't enough. I appreciate Mr Miller's reasoning behind a long stomp with an unfamiliar team including the positioning of a vehicle bale out plan to work out the who's who in quick time, I am not a fan of the good ideas fairy that some officers must have on speed dial, from conception to wash up of the whole E&E evolution was a ballsy but awesome move, Mr Miller's identification and treatment of risk during the activity should be a lesson for the current leadership cohort, who are afraid of risk putting themselves before the team. I understand the importance of realism in training, now, if you had asked 20 years ago not so much; additionally having experienced both positive and negative leadership, I believe Mr Miller to be solid. Happy to help chip in for more cigars and whiskey to hear more of Mr Miller's story, there is more to be told for sure. Thanks again. Kindest regards, Jeremy

second time here in a day, is a big shift from 'I don't comment'. This episode is the reason why we need podcasts like The Team House. To lose the lessons spread across four hours and not document such an extraordinary story would be negligent to those who need to learn. To listen to someone take responsibility for their mistakes has become rare, hearing speak about and not hiding from instances of personality clashes causing friction in the workplace is refreshing, highlighting the importance of not trying not to be a dick and the networks we build early can and do make the difference in achieving future missions, military lack of sympathy disregarding the impact on the family and the courage to put family ahead of career, to complete a career in service to your country, and a bunch of cool jobs scattered throughout. To judge someone by who their boss might be without understanding the role or the sense of duty indoctrinated through years of service and immersion in military culture only confirms how broken we have become. Thank you Mr Miller for sharing, and guys keep banging in this important work.

@@kevinmorthorst521Thier mission and role as an organization has changed alot over the decades but in the late 90s and GWOT years they focused on AFO -Advance Force Operations. Basically it’s about gathering intelligence and prepping logistics, assets, resources and contingencies for future JSOC missions. @1:01:07
For example, in Somalia when Black Hawk Down happened, before the big Task Force Ranger element even got into Somalia, Task Force Orange(ISA) and the CIA were on the ground covertly intercepting cellular and radio communications from Adids leadership, as well as recruiting local Somalis as human intelligence assets to collect information on Adids infrastructure.. They were prepping the battle space for the Task Force Ranger element and providing them the maximum amount of options for targeting Mohamed Farrah Adid. In the movie Black Hawk Down, that scene where the local Somali man parks his car in front of the target building,,, In real life that was a ISA/CIA recruited asset they paid and mentored to verify targets for the Task Force. ruclips.net/video/CGqb_FAbosw/видео.html
Source - “SEAL team 6” by Howard Wasdin.. Wasdin and his 3 other teammates worked with these small AFO teams, living out of safe houses with ISA and CIA operatives.
The team house even interviewed former CIA Africa Division Darrel Blocker and SAD PMOO Bazel Baz , who were some of the CIA folks on the ground in Somalia 1993 that worked with the ISA in this time frame.. Back then the ISA were known as Centra Spike

    • @joesgotya9930

@@kevinmorthorst521. Back in the early Pre GWOT days they were what is known as a “SAP” - Special Access Program.. SAPs had their own unique classification level and command system which was at the highest levels of DOD in the 80s and 90s. Early 2000-01 into the GWOT they tied into JSOC as a tier 1 unit. Years down the road as the GWOT reached apex, the AFO role expanded across all the tier 1 Units, and it played a big part in the Ranger RRD being inoculated into JSOC as RRC. AFO basically became a role that everyone did, rather then a specific trade that only one organization focused on. The expansion of Al Qaeda at the scale they were at forced a lot of Units into roles they normally did not do,, (at least not in high frequency.)
I have no clue what kind of stuff TF Orange is doing today. Sean Naylor speculated in his book that they possibly were absorbed into Delta Force and consolidated the 2 SMUs.. Who knows

@@kevinmorthorst521 My bad, I didn’t read your question properly.. What makes a unit (Tier 1) has to do with the charter of the organization.. In the case of JSOC, it’s primary charter is aimed at hostage rescue and counterterrorism. This charter is generated by some the highest levels of funding/budget in the entire DOD and the title of (Tier 1) is basically a bracket of logistics, assets and resources dedicated to that charter… lol Everyone thinks (Tier 1) just means (top bad ass) but it’s actually more specific to funding and budget.

Chris Miller is pretty much what we should ALWAYS want in a SecDef...a public servant who's been there done that. Problem is, I wonder if he served longer if he'd be chewed up by the system. The key there is full confidence of the president and solid top cover for the decisions he makes. Would he have gotten that? Not sure...but still not a "swamp dweller" which at this point is what we need. Well done guys.👍

Also, you had some heavy (pipe) hitters watching/listening in the "chat" today. If I am right, a Marine who served with CAG named Keith Oakes commented in the chat. He was in the recon community while I was at Lejeune and won the Best Ranger Competition as a GySgt. Must be a true stud to win that competition at that age. I believe the story goes that following that win, he ended up instructing at Ranger School and eventually making it to CAG. Loose summary here as I am not an authority on him whatsoever. Just someone I have heard of the in the past. Probably would be a great guest.

03:00:40 I’ve been anxiously waiting for this topic to grace The Team House. It’s just all damn confusing. Never took a look at any of it until 2017. I have a lot of free time on my hands and 60% of it for nearly 6 years has been spent on this “UFO/UAP” topic. The part of my brain that can organize my thoughts into written material is broken so this has largely been to educate myself and my close family, not for any reports or articles and certainly not for any money. I hate Twitter (just for the record).
The topic is extraordinarily complex. The disinformation and misinformation within the topic is incredible. There are many questions that at present cannot be answered. Everyone needs to press their Congressional leaders (especially those on the HPSCI & SSCI) and put heat on them to be clear with the American People. If someone doesn’t know how to do this ask me, I can send you a template you can use.
We are at the beginning of something. The problem for me is drawing the lines between what’s mis/dis and what’s ours. There is something going on, perhaps it’s just the past repeating, idk.
DAVE AND JACK: Christopher K. Mellon would be a fantastic guest to out this in perspective.
