I had some very loud rattling and clanging noises coming from my front drivers side when on rough roads and hitting small bumps. After looking into some videos, I took the wheel off and did an inspection of the suspension system parts but couldn’t find anything that stood out to me. The lug nuts seemed a little loose taking them off so I thought maybe that could possibly be the problem, but after putting everything back on to torque specs, it was still making the noise. I felt I was at the end of the road of my capabilities so I figured to take it in for service, but I found this method and it worked great to get it resolved. I was by myself and I banged on some of the suspension parts with a rubber mallet. I started hitting the ball joint area and heard some rattling. I started feeling around while hitting parts and then noticed one of the small bolts that fastens the brake caliper onto the piston bolts was completely missing. I checked the other bolt and it was even loose. The front pads were changed only about 6 months ago by the previous owner, so the shop that did them (Pep Boys) just didn’t tighten them enough. I replaced the fastening bolt and now the noises are fixed! I went ahead and tightened the caliper bolts on the passenger side as well. This was the first time I ever diagnosed and fixed something related to noises in the brake / suspension area - it was an enjoyable small victory! Thanks for the helpful video!
Bro, I was having a weird clunking noise when stopping and a pop when I'd back up and turn slowly. Was driving me crazy. So I did like you said, went and bought a rubber mallet and got under my car and just started smacking suspension parts. Sure enough, I hit one of the lower control arms and it did not sound like the others. Turns out the bolt had backed out just a little bit. Tightened it up and sure as shit, solved both problems. Rubber mallet guy for the win!! Thanks brother. 100% will be using this going forward. 👍
Saved the day with this video. Thank you. Loose metal guard on the brake mechanism. Clipped back on and job done. This technique found it straight away. Cheers
Finally I found my answer thanks Edit: It was a piece of metal from the shield, removed it by hand. Dealer quoted me couple thousand for bearing and differential......
thank you very much!!!!!!!!for one month i have noise under my BMW,,,no one know from where,,,,i look your video and i punch the wheel , and the rear wheel was noisy ,,it was break pad,,thank man
Thanks! Had a rattle in front passenger side under car going down some rough road but disappeared on smooth road. Found this video, tested, found hubcap is not secured on front passenger wheel. Hoping that's all it is!
Interesting! My car had a similar problem, I think one of the suspension parts was aged and worn out so that the rubber parts did not absorb the shock properly. Of course non of the repair shops had any clue to the problem. They even said it must be the clutch! If they did this, probably I would have avoided 3 years of irritation... In the end I sold my car...
This doesn't seem useful for rattles inside the car (it seems like the suspension and jackstands will absorb the hammering). I found a lot of links by just googling find interior rattles. However, I will definitely be trying this someday, for suspension rattles, thanks!!
I went outside to start fixing my car with the hammer I started to smash it with the hammer accidentally knocked myself out woke up the problem has gone away as somebody stole my car 🤦♂️😂
Wow, this might just work! Ill be back with a comment. Mu annoyingly next problem lyes with a rattle that only starts after 40 mph? WTF? Yea thats what I said. To be continued.......
This is the worst way I’ve ever heard to find a rattle, taking the weight off the suspension will make it completely different conditions then when you’re driving. If this had been a ball, joint, tie rod, strut, wheel bearing, axle etc, all the things, the typically make noise, you never would’ve found to doing that.
i wish i saw this video last week..thought it was exhaust sflow muffler ratting inside.change my muffler the rattle still there..then i punch my tire thought the drum brake..then go under car knock2 punch2 there it is rear spring rattle with underbody surround plate touching the spring😂 car is celica liftback ta28
Brilliant. I hammered my head once. Not only my car was fixed but all my miseries were gone in a flash.
😂
