  • Hello again and welcome back. Here is a video illustration of what I look for when buying semi-auto pistols, and a couple of tips to protect yourself when making on-line purchases. I'm certain that I probably cover everything or every detail, but this is a good starting point for those new to used firearm purchasing.
    I am using my Sig Sauer P226 as the video test subject.
    Thanks for watching...

    Great video with good tips. I might suggest one more...
    If you're buying an older firearm, say 50+ years old, or you're buying military surplus, it's a good idea to check the head space. If a firearm has been fired thousands of times or if it is made of weaker metal, the head space can become stretched, and the gun is no longer safe to use. Some will say this isn't feasible to do without taking it to a gunsmith, but you can buy a GO/NOGO gauge for the caliber you are looking for to take with you to gun shows or to retail stores to do a quick test of that. They can be pricey - $40 - $60, but still cheaper than finding out after the fact that your newly acquired firearm is unsafe. If nothing else, ask the seller if he has had the head space checked and what they found. He may say he doesn't know, but at least
    Again, this is primarily for testing much older firearms and especially milsurp. I know this from experience, having bought some older guns that looks great and appeared to function just fine, but when I had the head space checked they were stretched beyond safe limits. That means I either have to get it rechambered by a gunsmith or else just keep it for its historical value. I like to be able to shoot all of my firearms, so I consider that to be a real disadvantage if they can't be safely fired.
    If you aren't familiar with head space and the implications of it being too large, I recommend doing some Internet research on it. There's a lot available online, and it will make you a more knowledgeable buyer.

      You Sir are correct. If i were buying older, surplus or high-powered rifles, I would definitely check the head spacing; or have a gunsmith check it for me. I'm not too concerned about it in modern handguns to much though. The cartridge pressures aren't so high that they cause chamber stretching (usually), unless of course someone has shot some overpowered loads in the gun. At that point, the barrel or gun has probably already been destroyed. But your point is well taken and excellently expressed. Thank you.

    You know a lot more about guns than I do .I'm learning as I go though.I have a question.always been a revolver person .have a glock gen 3 ,33.bought that one because a friend recommend it.can't stand shooting it .Don't like the in the hand feel of glocks in general.Another friend who was knowledgeable about guns recommended a Beretta A1.like it a lot but a little much for carry.Recently held,not fired,a WE p365th & the xl version.Went back to visit them again and checked out the sas version.really liked the xl the most of the 3.sure do wish it had a hammer though.? is...what other simiauto would be good to take a look at before buying the xl.the Beretta compacts seem nice.never been around one before to check it out 1st hand.looking when I'm out of town where there are more than 1 gun store but no luck yet.like options.thanks & have a nice holiday season this year.

      @mr2275cur  4 года назад +1

      Wow, that's a though question. There are so many options out there. I too am not a Glock fan.
      First thing you need to do is decide if you want polymer or steel; hammer or striker; small, medium or large; and what caliber. You're doing the right thing by trying out several and hopefully you'll derive at a likable choice soon.

      Big Swoll58 thanks for getting back to me. Started looking at beretta cheetah and some other options from aims import.aims does give inspection time. A week I think. Had some nice LEO TRADE INS .all looked good & $20 extra you get hand selected that are like new. I had some pretty nice Smith and Wesson revolvers. trade ins . But were sold out at the moment. You’ve got to be quick on those. Heavy barrel model 64 4” with bobed hammers. I’ll sure to find something good soon. Thx again.

    What about the dry fire? I thought it was frowned upon?

    • @mr2275cur
      @mr2275cur  5 месяцев назад +1

      That's an over exaggerated concern for center-fired guns. It doesn't hurt to dry-fire most center-fired guns in moderation. Snap caps and spent casing can be used if desired if you'll be doing a lot of it. Rim-fired guns however should not be dry-fired. Always use snap caps to avoid dry-firing those.

    • @mr2275cur
      @mr2275cur  2 года назад +1

      Good question. The answer is "NO". Most Sig models are Single and Double Action pistols. However, they do make several models that can be purchased as either Single Action Only (SAO), or Double Action Only (DAO); and a couple models that are only available as SAO. Check their website for a complete list of each.
