I must say, Eli that you're braver than I am by riding a camel in the middle of nowhere in freezing temperatures. It amazes me that anyone chooses to live in such conditions, but humans are amazingly different and adaptable. And no matter where you go, the people are friendly.
Oirad means forest folk, Dzungars means left flank in Mongolian. Literally the tribe from the forest made up the left flank of the Mongol empire at its peak expansion. So Pushkin didnt like our tea. Well its his loss. Its a hearty drink that helps you survive the harsh winter.

Lovely Eli, it is so true, happiness is within, it may be a hard life, but I noticed that often the simpler the life the more people laugh and smile, work hard, share, have a sense of satisfaction and their spiritual connection. They don't forget their past and their ancestors and have a strong connection to the land.

This is absolutely amazing and very educational, I never knew that about “Ura” though we use the word too. 😯 That man throat chanting gave me strong The Hu vibes (Mongol band which makes sense I guess). Love this series, although Elina’s vlogs are generally so good, the Russian travels hit differently somehow, maybe because the other places (in Europe, Asia or Australia) are more familiar and less shrouded in mystery like these RF republics are.❤

The sounds of throat singing are strangely beguiling - very otherworldly. In such an extreme environment the Kalmyks manage to maintain a surprisingly laid-back and very hospitable attitude. 👍
This was so interesting, Eli. We are watching from Calgary, Canada. It was -30C last week (-45 C with windchill), very arid, and +30C in the summer. Sounds a bit like Kalmykia!

Excellent video! We also have Bactrian camels with double humps in the cold desert of Ladakh, India of all places, especially in the Hunder area, part of the old Silk Road. The locals also fallow the Gelugpa sect of Buddhism as in Tibet.
400 years ago Kalmyks (Oirats) were so powerful, that they controlled Tibet, and they played major part in spreading Gelugpa Buddism in Mongolia and China.

Buryatia is another region of Russia I find very fascinating. I know you covered this region a lot in many videos, Eli but this area fascinates me a lot. I love the national costumes and festivals of this region.
Kalmyks are very similar to Mongolians in terms if culture. And Mongolians are super close to Buryats, their languages are pretty close. Back in the early 1920s they were considered the same people. I'm from Irkutsk oblast, Buryats live there traditionally. My best friends in high school were Buryat girls.
The introduction of the burning spring was so simple you cant believe how big of a deal that is! how come nobody is around the spring all the time....The man is all rounded and rooted always loves to see a cultured Man.

As long as the arms merchants make money off wars, they will always want to frame somebody as the evil meanie nation. When it is convenient to describe Russia as a friend (World War I and World War II) that is the story. When money can be made fighting Russia, that is the story (Cold War and now). Either way it is propaganda as convenienced by the moment. In a few years the story will change back again. Then reverse again after that. Learn from history and you can predict the future. Try reading Orwell's book "1984."

Interesting to have a strong Mongol based culture so far west. Did not know Kalmycia was a western region Mongols stayed and their culture endured. Right next door to the Caucus and just above Iran. Russia truly is highly diverse with the good thing cultures have been conserved similar to their ancient heritage. So windy there - and then so hot in the summertime. I might try the tea but don't like the sound of it. Your presentations are greatly appreciated - Thank You. My guess is you are going up the Volga River in your next travels.

When it is convenient to describe Russia as a friend (World War I and World War II) that is the story. When money can be made fighting Russia, that is the story (Cold War and now). Either way it is propaganda as convenienced by the moment. In a few years the story will change back again. Then reverse again after that. Learn from history and you can predict the future. Try reading Orwell's book "1984."

Interesting to have a strong Mongol based culture so far west. Did not know Kalmycia was a western region Mongols stayed and their culture endured. Right next door to the Caucus and just above Iran. Russia truly is highly diverse with the good thing cultures have been conserved similar to their ancient heritage. So windy there - and then so hot in the summertime. I might try the tea but don't like the sound of it. Your presentations are greatly appreciated - Thank You. My guess is you are going up the Volga River in your next travels.
