I bought a box of 2022 Gilded off the topps site when it dropped (I want to say $350). I also jumped in one group break and hit the Witt Rookie auto. To me, that card even though its out of 199, is one of his best looking rookie autos. That was the card I was chasing, so I was afraid to touch the box I bought after getting lucky in the break. And has some great images (just not the Julio auto, YUCK). Honestly though, I'd sell your box and buy yourself a nice single with the proceeds!

Its almost a breakers exclusive at this price point though, hard to justify buying a personal box, but i love it. This is exactly the path dynasty took in its beginning, and eventually I think Gilded will also start to gain traction in the hobby. Right now is the time to be grabbing your pc players.

But still, agree that the high wax price and recent sales point to Gilded not being a smart buy. Started just grabbing singles of some our favorite players. Not touching a box.
The Gilded parallels this year look like hotel carpet from the 1970s. I was not impressed with the design. I bought 2 boxes in 2022 when they started at $250. Maybe got $100-150 back total from the two boxes (and I ended up with 5 autos). I would never buy at $800. Still, I prefer Gilded over all of the different Sapphire sets. Having just picked up a 4-color Riley Greene RPA from Dynasty for under $400, I may start looking towards more from Dynasty sets.
I like both sets as they both look stunning to me. I have Gilded over Sapphire overall, but seeing sticker autos on sapphire cards is a total turn off to me. I don't collect sticker autos. Unfortunately i have two sticker auto cards in my main person collection, but i got the one about 16 years ago and is a somewhat rare card. I also agree, low end players or no name scrubs have no business signing cards and being placed into higher end sets. I don't think they should even be in more normal level products. No one wants autos from scrubs. Topps needs to fix that ASAP if they want to charge these ridiculous prices for all the products.
@SpitballinCards mine is 2008 Topps Triple Threads Relic combo autos of Nolan Ryan (my PC), Robin yount, and George Brett. Numbered 34/36, so jersey number for Nolan. Sent it to PSA and got PSA 8, AUTO 9 because Nolan let his auto go off the sticker by the smallest margin. You can barely tell. But I got the card way back then.
Love how the Gilded set looked. Visually stunning.. but they need to either cut box prices in half, add better autos, add more cards per box.. something definitely needs to be done. Beautiful product though.
Bobby Witt, arguably one of the best young players in the game, finished 2nd in MVP voting, just had his 2022 Gilded RC /199 PSA 10 non-auto sell for $430. His Auto in a PSA 9 for $480. Good looking stuff, and limited, but obviously not enough interest in gilded.
I like the set and usually buy a couple singles each year. Better to wait and buy a couple psa 10s you want. It’s still less than the cost of the box this way.
Gilded looks great, but like Scott said, they all look very similar. The Sapphire parallels on the other hand are very distinctive (in color, at least) while not being quite so out of reach. And Sapphire might not have autos this year, but having short prints and color variation within the parallels makes the offering feel even more expansive.
Enjoyed the video guys. Thanks for your honesty as always. Isn't this product emblematic of more and more Topps releases? I feel like my response to so many of these product releases are all the same. A) who can afford these boxes? B) I'd be lucky to get 25% value back on my spend C) even buying in to a break, which I have a huge ethical problem with from a gambling aspect, is going to cost a fortune before I hit a card that worth 50%+ my buy in. For me, all of this gets more and more disappointing because ripping is so much fun - but, out my reach now & the foreseeable future.
Awesome cards, a set best appreciated in person and purchased as singles. Get the retired players in the more classic /99 base style, and the active stars in one of the etch variations you prefer. This year the mini-diamond looks fantastic. Like an opal inside a gold nuggett.
You guys are saying the content in Gilded isn't justified, but what product is the content justified? The answer is none. I love gold cards and i love limited print runs and Gilded checks both boxes for me.
@SpitballinCards no I wouldn't, but at today's current product prices I wouldn't open ANY products. Buying singles or player breaks is the way to go for me. Every single argument in this video against Gilded can be made for 90% of products. I mean yeah this year's Gilded design isn't the best but name a product who hasn't had a flubbed design in its past. People used to stay away from Dynasty too because of its one card for $500 and now it's suddenly all the rage. I think Gilded is on the same path as Dynasty used to be, that is of course as long as Topps doesn't over produce it.
@@mangobango6970 your first sentence is sad but also dead on right. I guess my issue is - what's the point of this set? And yes, you could ask that about a lot of sets. Assuming he has autos in Sapphire update and dynasty, where would you rank Skenes' gilded rookied autos? I'm legit curious because I'm struggling with it myself
@SpitballinCards personally I don't collect pitchers even hyped up ones, but for me it would be the equivalent of his bowman 1st refractor auto. But I do understand the confusion amongst all the sets. To me it's the limited availability that really sets it apart from all the other products. I know prices currently don't reflect that but I think in time people will realize the significance of small batch products such as Gilded and Dynasty.
@@mangobango6970 When comparing those last two sets, Gilded is just another chorme product and Dynasty is totally different. I'm not on the dynasty train, btw. Not yet at least. Okay, forget Skenes. Lets use Chourio: Topps Chrome Topps Chrome Logofractor Topps Chrome Cosmic Topps Chrome Sapphire Topps Chrome GIlded It's a lot and I just don't see any reason to go Gilded over the others. Maybe in a couple years it will be more clear.
First off Im glad you guys brought this set up. Second im not done listening yet but heres my take. There is a few of us vintage collectors that love this set because the checklist is full of greats and it keeps us involved in today topps designs and being there all gold really is the cherry on top since most us old guys love gold because of the lineage with gold starting back in 1992 And than in 2001 with the numbering to the year than yet again in 2009 Gold chromes /50 . I love the history of gold cards as a long time collector. As for RC cards who cares 😂😂😂😂. Watching people Spend $800 on 4 or 5 cards is crazy but as a collector I love that they instantly sell of all the Mantles, Jackies, ted williams all the greats. Its such a fun way to have a 2024 topps design with the greatest players of all time. So long opinion short its a great collectors set for sure 😜🤙🤙
As a value box junkie who doesn't buy wax, I love when they have all these different kinds of products. I feel bad for those who lose so badly on these top tier products, but I love that in a year or two, I can buy a bunch of "base" HOF players for a quarter. I say stack all the best current and former players in every product, and have a bunch of different cheap variations, looks, colors, and poses. I will be buying them for nothing and putting them in my player binders for years to come! Love the hobby.
Not a big fan of gilded. Sapphire cards just look amazing - the yellows and golds especially. Even Bowman Chrome Sapphire. There are so many cool looking sapphire parallels of players that can be had for reasonable prices on eBay or Comc. Great for young collectors especially.
Yeah i can see that. I just with they'd combine all the sapphire sets. Seems like too many releases for what's supposed to be an ultra high end exclusive set!
Thanks for another great vid. Quick question about Dynasty because you guys mentioned it a couple times. Is Dynasty game worn? Are we sure of this? The language on the back of the card leaves a lot open…
It is good looking. And the checklist relative to rookies is solid. Dynasty's rc list is too limited. I bought a Ceddanne Rafaela /25 auto, the so-called rose gold parallel. Topps Chrome rc list is hundreds of players. I think it fits in well.
The Leland should be a jersey card with some cigarette ash stains on it or maybe even a short print with a piece of cigarette butt mixed with some ashes. Who else was a smoker that was a manager can't think of any others. Bought the Ceddanne Rafaela/50 card. He is my 2024 flyer rookie of the year
Great stuff Gents. I am with you guys on both Sapphire and even Topps Chrome over Gilded. In fact, in general, I could do without Gilded. Am I the only one that thinks Topps is going to far with Chrome cards? I think it is deluting the actual Topps Chrome set. And in general, I think we all agree that Topps is making too many sets and especially in the higher end products, but Breakers may disagree and they drive the price and the product in many cases. Until next time....
The concern I have with Gilded is the marketing becomes ‘It’s like Topps _____, BUT’ instead of ‘It’s like Topps _____, AND’ So many other Topps products can do what Gilded does, but have something about themselves that they do better.
There's definitley potential here with gilded, but to me (Chris here) it just doesnt stand out enough to justify the insane box prices. I mean $700+ per box and I might get a Parker meadows auto?? Get out of here with that.
@@Philmington Thanks. Hoping for a 💎. Yeah I think most of us have minor problems with Gilded vs major ones. The frame pack for starters can be so god awful at times. Definitely should be a 2nd chrome pack in the box so each box has 3 autos. Honestly if they just got rid of the frame pack and did 2 chrome packs I probably would enjoy it more. The design choices this year in regards to the chrome pack were not the best for sure. Boxes did start south of 600 but doesn’t take much time for individuals to start marking it up to 800. Would really enjoy if it gains more traction but will probably stay niche.
@@SpitballinCards Thanks. Actually hit a /50 and the /5 in the same break. Definitely blew all my 2025 luck on gilded Imao. I'll post some pics when it gets back from PSA.
A box of Gilded is way too expensive as you've pointed out, and the auto checklist is way too risky for that high of a price, so unless it was at least half the price, I wouldn't buy a box. That said they are some of my favorite cards. I like that they're all numbered, and it's a limited, more high-end set, but the singles aren't crazy expensive like Dynasty (for obvious reasons). For average collectors, we're more likely to be able to afford our favorite players' autos on a gold card, as opposed to say a Chrome rookie gold auto (which yes I'd rather have, but the Gilded looks just as nice IMO, and is affordable).
It's become an outdated meme how bad wax prices are, along with the crazy number of sets! The only reconciliation I see is that there's just so many collectors and buyers out there, there has to be more cards to keep single prices down. Like, I've been collecting since the late 90's, and had only one fellow hobbiest in my friend circle who collected (not a social media/online friend) until 2017 or so. Now, there's 2 other cooks in my kitchen who collect, and between all of us, we personally know 6 other collectors "IRL". None of us rip wax, but we all collect singles in different niches, so having a variety of products suits us fine. I just wish prices came down on hobby wax so I could rip with my buddies, now all we get is retail blasters now and then 🤷♂️
Chris here - yeah I feel you. Jeff and I would love to rip boxes more often but I just can't stomach throwing $200-400 away more than once! It's just brutal. Glad to hear your in person card buddy circle is growing!!
I hate these Chrome spinoffs for a couple reasons. Not just Gilded, but Sapphire and others as well. 1. They are just a spinoff, apart from the gold plated cards that replaced gold standard, and a couple special inserts, in general all these releases designs are the exact same. Color and artwork changes only. 2. Supply and demand, part of the reason these boxes go up in price is because the number of collectors doesn't change much. I'm sure the color and artwork changes in the product change the number of people interested in the product slightly, but in general its relatively the same number of people for each release as design doesn't change. I haven't done the numbers on boxes in a while, but I am pretty sure last time I did there were just over 10,000 gilded boxes, and hundreds of thousands of chrome hobby boxes, over a million including all variants. That's about 100x the number of Gilded boxes compared to normal chrome, meaning if chrome can sell out like Gilded, the demand is roughly 100x what Gilded offers, meaning the only way to weed out 99% of collectors is to increase price to a point the 1% can afford, and chances are the 1% of richest collectors don't care as much about the money, so they are fine if the number surpasses any sort of return on the box money wise. If it was up to me I would get rid of sapphire, Logofractor, Gilded, etc. Yes I own some cards from those releases, as do most collectors invested in the hobby, but that doesn't mean its a good release from Topps, just a good secondary market card to have. The product that grows and grows on me is Bowmans Best, due to its ability to increase print run to keep up with demand, and not have spinoffs, the cracked ice parallels aren't called sapphire, they're built into the product and called atomic, along with everything else from on card autos to the price point.
I do love all the autos in bowmans best are ON CARD!! But no more atomics, that design is now saved for sapphire. I basically agree. Every new set just bastardizes topps Chrome more and more and kills the values of the sets that came before it! and yes, these prices are killign all of us!!
Here's how I look at it...Sapphire has the same image as flagship. Gilded doesn't. Therefore, as a flagship fan and collector, I want sapphire. I also dont like the weird circular design on gilded this year. If they weren't all gold with a framed auto, boxes would be the price of 2022 Topps Chrome Sonic.
glad i bought that gilded gold etch lava refractor /10 yadier molina when i seen it pop up. snagged it for cheap. figured anything /10 worth a gamble. SOTO to the Metropolitins.
Oh yeah, his auto changed after Topps Chrome. THe sapphire rookie autos are just a J and it looks like gilded is the same way. What a waste. I get it if hes frustrated but seriously, put some effort into it!!
The supers are plenty discernible. They have the gilded design boarder and it says gilded on the back. Less discernible is a super of a rookie that has a card in both chrome and chrome update. I agree the base /99 and yellow /75 are definitely hard to tell apart but the others are noticeably different.
Thumb down. We want lower print runs and on card autos! Oh wait but it cost more and isn’t readily available … we don’t like. Make up your mind. I agree with all of you, they look better, more premium, and aren’t available to everyone.
hahaha we are indeed a fickle group. I guess the ever increasing wax prices are hurting my spirit. Chris here - and I sitll havent emotionally recovered from seeing Stadium Boxes listed at $220.
I have to say, people should definitely stop paying those high prices for the box when the singles aren’t making up for it. Market should take care of that in time. You guys also didn’t discuss the gold framed cards. I think those are hideous. Maybe replace that with 2 additional cards and the set is worth the price.
@@sethcthomas98 We totally should have. THey look just like cards from previous years - Gold label autos maybe? And Topps Transcendence. I just dont get it. Leave things in the sets they belong in!
The auto checklist is way too massive to justify the price of this product. Case openings of this product is usually a blood bath and it over in 15 minutes
I got a box of update chrome sapphire this year. The condition on the cards is awful. Very disappointing. Topps should be ashamed with it being so pricey.
@@FandSsportscards Ugh. That stinks. Sorry to hear that. You wonder if there was something on the table under the card wen he signed it. How'd you get a box so early?????
I think this set is horrible but I’ve thought the same of sapphire also. It’s the exact same design and photos as chrome. Just someone playing around on photoshop to add yet another filter to the same card. My daughter could do better in her HS graphic design class. Give new card designs and images. At least chrome black does that and comes out early enough to be the first RC for some players. Gilded and sapphire are just more money grabbing that just makes wanna go buy more cool unique 90s inserts
Yep, I can't argue this too much. Once they started in with multiple parallels in Sapphire, you knew they were printing it to the moon and all the novelty and significance of the set was basically GONE.
Does making the cards gold and /99 really matter when there's a million other cards of that player number /99 or less with every color of the rainbow? What's really the difference between a gold vinyl 1/1 in this product compared to sonic, sapphire, or regular chrome? Is it that you spent a grand on the box? Seems stupid to me and I've been collecting cards for a long time. You think basketball inserts from the 90's can be confusing for people? wait 20 years for people to try and decipher the BS Fanatics keeps dumping on to the market.
@@Ryan-yh3zw definitely a deliberate move by topps there. Lets see if the sapphire update Skenes autos are on card or stickers. That will go a long way to make or break the product.
They are both pieces of paper with a picture on it , and sometimes an auto or relic. Just different paper stock and finish. All of it is overpriced and for those who have more money than they know what to do with. If you spent the same amount on gold you would end up with more in the long run.
Just like the other boxes these days just to much $$$ an nothing really worth the reward. 😢😢😢 Just lost the interest in building sets even. Over saturated
For what it costs its not worth it. a lot like 99% of what Topps is putting out. Its money grabs. They have their RnD departments scouring Reddit coming out with things we don't want with a slim chase. Then you get breakers who want to charge enough to almost double their break cost. The hobby is massively flawed and since there is about to be a license monopoly nothing will change. All of it is a massive chase with very limited hits. It wont change as long as Topps see's high profits and breakers keep getting their margins.

lol bottle of bourbon and two cases of heritage, lets go!!!!
Sounds like a great night to me!!! And one I'll probably be happy to forget lol
But would you pay $700-$800 to rip a box?
Lets use Chourio:
Topps Chrome
Topps Chrome Logofractor
Topps Chrome Cosmic
Topps Chrome Sapphire
Topps Chrome GIlded
It's a lot and I just don't see any reason to go Gilded over the others.
Watching people
Spend $800 on 4 or 5 cards is crazy but as a collector I love that they instantly sell of all the Mantles, Jackies, ted williams all the greats. Its such a fun way to have a 2024 topps design with the greatest players of all time. So long opinion short its a great collectors set for sure 😜🤙🤙
Also i love listening you guys talk about cards its always a good time 👊👊
As a value box junkie who doesn't buy wax, I love when they have all these different kinds of products.
Jabs opened two boxes and got two Quinn Priester autos. That was the highlight of either box. The floor you were describing was dirt on the ground
Gilded is a set ill wait and buy cards i like on the secondary market. No way am I paying to be in a break of that
agreed - wax price is absurd!
But does this set stand out to you compared to other Topps Chrome releases?
The gold storms are the best looking inserts they've done in a long time
Chris here - good point, i've now seen some of those on ebay and I have to admit they do look really good!
2 boxes of Gilded or a round-trip ticket to Thailand? Anybody that rips this needs help
Chris here - surely there's a third option!
The Background for the 2024 Topps Gilded cards looks like some old wallpaper from the French Quarter.
😂
it's all being bastardized...the RC shield is everywhere...the Bowman 1st still feels somewhat unique...
Chris here - as set after set comes out, the bowman 1st autos, even with the increased parallels, look more and more significant.
Agreed
I have a 2022 Topps update Julio 1987 black auto PSA 10. It’s a sharp image.
The Leland should be a jersey card with some cigarette ash stains on it or maybe even a short print with a piece of cigarette butt mixed with some ashes. Who else was a smoker that was a manager can't think of any others. Bought the Ceddanne Rafaela/50 card. He is my 2024 flyer rookie of the year
I'd love that Leyland!! Rafaela had some great red sox moments this year and his series 1 Golden Mirror SSP is one of my favorite images of the set!
Millard fillmore is the Harold baines of President's....on the ground LMFAO..😂😂😂BEST EVER CHRIS
The concern I have with Gilded is the marketing becomes ‘It’s like Topps _____, BUT’ instead of ‘It’s like Topps _____, AND’
So many other Topps products can do what Gilded does, but have something about themselves that they do better.
There's definitley potential here with gilded, but to me (Chris here) it just doesnt stand out enough to justify the insane box prices. I mean $700+ per box and I might get a Parker meadows auto?? Get out of here with that.
Sapphire is a tired design- they should make Guilded and Sapphire insert cards in flagship and chrome and toss all the stupid parallels.
interesting thought...
The Gilded color cards remind me of the 1999 upper deck Wonder Years inserts. Lol look them up and tell me I’m not kinda right….
Okay, youre definitely kind of right
Watching this while my 2024 Gilded Jackson Chourio /5 red auto is at PSA
I don’t have a major problem with Gilded 👍
Sick card btw 🔥
That's a hell of a Chourio card! Congrats!!
I am usually on point with you guys but I LOVE GILDED! Let me specific though, I love picking up specific gilded cards, not dropping $800 on a box.
"The Harold Baines of Presidents"
💯💯
Here's how I look at it...Sapphire has the same image as flagship. Gilded doesn't. Therefore, as a flagship fan and collector, I want sapphire. I also dont like the weird circular design on gilded this year. If they weren't all gold with a framed auto, boxes would be the price of 2022 Topps Chrome Sonic.
The design this year is nowhere near as good as the 2022 debut Gilded set. Totally agree
If Ken Boyer gets in tonight his 1964 Gilded is gonna explode!
glad i bought that gilded gold etch lava refractor /10 yadier molina when i seen it pop up. snagged it for cheap. figured anything /10 worth a gamble. SOTO to the Metropolitins.
Soto leaving the yankees - I wonder how he'll feel about it 5 years from now.
Please check Jackson Merrill 1/1 auto in Gilded gold. The signature is so different from TC auto, that sucks😂
I've seen 2022 High number blasters at Walmart for that Witt Jr. Auto🤔🤔
How do they prove if those cut autos are real.
we have to take Topps' word for it. I guess
@@SpitballinCards Its crazy to me if anyone buys a box 500 plus or more to pull 1 of those cuts auto and say hey I won my box.
Wow I would have bought that Leonard Nimoy for that price
When the skenes RPA is hit the chrome update boxes will drop 60%
Then I’ll be a buyer again
The auto checklist is way too massive to justify the price of this product. Case openings of this product is usually a blood bath and it over in 15 minutes
I got a box of update chrome sapphire this year. The condition on the cards is awful. Very disappointing. Topps should be ashamed with it being so pricey.
Was it the centering?? Seems like centering is always an issue with all the update products.
@ there’s scratches on most of them, and my Holliday green auto has a big divet on the back.
@@FandSsportscards Ugh. That stinks. Sorry to hear that. You wonder if there was something on the table under the card wen he signed it.
How'd you get a box so early?????
@@SpitballinCards Montgomery Club Membership. It got delivered yesterday, Sunday, via FedEx. Got 1 box through Montgomery Club.
Hey Chris I’m Armenian ! !!!!
Coming soon... Topps Bejeweled. Gilded will be the new Sapphire, Sapphire will be the new Chrome. etc etc - WW
Ocho
Trey Cabbage autos
@@adamchurch8244 🤮🤮
Does making the cards gold and /99 really matter when there's a million other cards of that player number /99 or less with every color of the rainbow? What's really the difference between a gold vinyl 1/1 in this product compared to sonic, sapphire, or regular chrome? Is it that you spent a grand on the box? Seems stupid to me and I've been collecting cards for a long time. You think basketball inserts from the 90's can be confusing for people? wait 20 years for people to try and decipher the BS Fanatics keeps dumping on to the market.
I'll take Sapphire all day over Gilded personally
Also to add it's the only product where you can get the "Atomic" look since Topps decided to remove them from Bowman's Best.
@@Ryan-yh3zw definitely a deliberate move by topps there. Lets see if the sapphire update Skenes autos are on card or stickers. That will go a long way to make or break the product.
This year's design doesn't look as good as the previous ones. I like the 2022 the most.
@@rsuriyop Chris here - right there with you!
third!!! 😂
😂😂
They are both pieces of paper with a picture on it , and sometimes an auto or relic. Just different paper stock and finish. All of it is overpriced and for those who have more money than they know what to do with.
If you spent the same amount on gold you would end up with more in the long run.
This sounds like very solid, and smart - though somewhat boring investment advice. haha
Just like the other boxes these days just to much $$$ an nothing really worth the reward. 😢😢😢 Just lost the interest in building sets even. Over saturated
totally agree, It;s a serious problem in the hobby right now
For what it costs its not worth it. a lot like 99% of what Topps is putting out.
Yes.
I’ve watched every episode but it is getting to be a lot of complaining
Chris here - honestly, you're right. We actually discussed this after this episode. We';ll work on it!
Sapphire was fire pre-2019 but now both are a dumpster fire for me
Chris here - I hate to say I’m leaning in this same direction, but…
